A Local’s Guide to Autumn in Stockholm: Cozy Cafés, Colorful Walks and Hidden Corners

When autumn arrives in Stockholm, the city transforms into a watercolor of deep reds and golds. The air turns crisp, the light softens, and locals trade summer picnics for long walks, steaming coffee and cozy weekends by the water.

As someone who calls this city home, I think autumn is one of the most magical times to experience it — peaceful, colorful and full of small pleasures. From quiet strolls beneath fiery leaves to boat rides through the archipelago, here are my favorite ways to enjoy Stockholm in the fall, the local way.

🍁 1. See the Red Foliage at Stadshuset

Even after living in Stockholm for nine years, the City Hall (Stadshuset) is still one of my absolute favorite spots in the city. This iconic building makes such a majestic statement on Stockholm’s skyline, and it’s a must-visit if you’re coming here.

If you’re planning a trip during autumn, you’re arriving at one of the best times to see it. That’s when the deep red ivy climbs the enormous brick walls, making the whole building feel even more magical.

But Stadshuset isn’t just great for autumn colors — it also offers one of the best views in Stockholm. Sitting right by the water, it gives you a privileged perspective of the city’s beauty. My favorite way to enjoy it? Pack a small picnic, find a quiet spot by the waterfront and just take in the peaceful, golden light.

🚶‍♀️ 2. Explore the Streets of Östermalm

Östermalm is one of Stockholm’s most elegant neighborhoods, and autumn is the perfect time to explore its streets. Even after years living here, I still love wandering around its beautiful boulevards and quiet side streets lined with classic architecture and charming details.

If Stockholm had a “fancy pants” district, Östermalm would definitely wear the crown — think chic shops, stylish cafés and those perfectly polished sidewalks. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a millionaire to enjoy its golden autumn glow!

This area feels both upscale and welcoming, with leafy doorways that take on a beautiful golden hue in the fall. It’s a great way to experience Stockholm’s sophisticated side without the crowds you find downtown.

Whether you’re out for a casual stroll or just want to soak up local life, Östermalm’s calm, beautiful streets make a lovely autumn walk — and a perfect way to see a different, classier layer of the city.

🍂 3. Stroll Along Stockholm’s Most Beautiful Street: Danderydsgatan

Even though Danderydsgatan is one of Stockholm’s most beautiful streets, I’ve never seen tourists there in all the times I’ve walked it. This quiet, charming residential street is a photographer’s dream and absolutely one of Stockholm’s most Instagrammable spots — yet it remains a hidden gem.

I’ve passed by countless times, even when it wasn’t on my way anywhere, simply because the street feels so cozy and full of character. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak in the calm, everyday beauty of the city.

If you’re visiting Stockholm in autumn or any time of year, Danderydsgatan is definitely worth a stroll — especially if you want to experience a peaceful, authentic side of the city away from the crowds.

🏠 4. Wander Through the Enchanting Streets of Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is where I first fell completely in love with the city when I moved here nine years ago. I still clearly remember my very first stroll through its medieval cobblestone streets, thinking, “How did I get so lucky to live here?”

This small island in central Stockholm is absolutely stunning all year round and should be on every Stockholm itinerary, no matter the season. However, autumn is one of the best times to visit Gamla Stan.

The colorful autumn foliage beautifully contrasts with the vibrant, historic buildings of Stockholm’s medieval Old Town. It creates the perfect backdrop for exploring and for photography. You might fall in love with Stockholm there, just like I did.

Another great reason to visit Gamla Stan in autumn is that the crowds are much smaller. With the summer tourist rush over, you can enjoy a quieter, more peaceful experience without having to navigate through busy streets. 🗝️ 6. Skansen — My All-Time Favorite Place in Stockholm (and One of My Favorites in the World)

Since moving to Sweden, I’ve been to Skansen dozens of times, and I never get tired of exploring this incredible open-air museum. It’s one of the best museums to visit in Stockholm and it should definitely be on your itinerary — especially if you want to experience Swedish history, culture and traditions up close.

Skansen is much more than a typical museum. It’s a living piece of Swedish history, featuring historic buildings that were carefully dismantled and brought here from all over Sweden. Amazing, right?

It’s a beautiful place to visit, but it’s also an interactive experience where actors in period costumes bring the past to life with fascinating stories about Swedish life through the ages.

☕ 8. Take a Cozy Fika: Savor Autumn Flavors in Stockholm

No autumn day in Stockholm is complete without a proper fika — a Swedish tradition of enjoying coffee, pastries, and a moment to slow down. Fika isn’t just a treat; it’s a huge part of Swedish culture and social life. A cherished daily ritual where friends, families and colleagues pause to connect, relax and savor the simple joys of life.

After wandering the golden paths of Rosendals Trädgård or strolling through Djurgården’s leafy streets, stepping into a cozy café feels like the perfect seasonal reward.

One of the coziest cafés I’ve ever had fika at is Café Petissan, tucked inside Skansen. Surrounded by charming historic buildings and the soft rustle of autumn leaves, it’s a spot that perfectly captures the warmth and charm of the season. Sipping a hot cup of coffee while eating a freshly baked pastry there feels like a small slice of Stockholm magic.

Stockholm is full of other charming cafés as well, from hidden gems tucked away in Östermalm to quaint spots in Gamla Stan. Autumn is the perfect time to try seasonal treats like cinnamon buns, pumpkin pastries or warm apple pies.

Many cafés offer seating by the window, so you can watch the amber leaves fall outside as you sip and relax.

For a truly local experience, seek out small, independent cafés rather than the larger chains. Fika isn’t just about food — it’s about pausing, soaking in the atmosphere and letting the season’s cozy magic seep in.

Just a short ferry ride from Stockholm, this charming archipelago town feels like stepping into a storybook, especially in fall when the trees along the waterfront turn brilliant shades of red, orange and gold.

After a day trip to Vaxholm, you might be tempted to see even more of what makes Stockholm so magical. The archipelago is truly one of the city’s hidden treasures — a breathtaking network of more than 30,000 islands and islets scattered across the Baltic Sea.

It’s unbelievable that such wild and peaceful beauty is just a short boat ride away from the city center.

In autumn, the archipelago slows down. The crowds disappear, the air turns crisp and the islands glow in warm shades of gold and red. If you want to go further than Vaxholm, hop on a boat to islands like Grinda, Sandhamn or Fjäderholmarna — each with its own rhythm, quaint harbors, and views that feel a world away from city life.

If you’re dreaming of visiting the iconic city of Dubrovnik but dread the crowds and high prices, there’s a hidden gem you need to know about — Korčula. Often called the “Mini Dubrovnik”, this charming Croatian island offers the same medieval architecture, fortified walls and stunning Adriatic views, but with a fraction of the tourists.

From its narrow cobblestone streets to vibrant local culture and peaceful sandy beaches, Korčula delivers a magical escape that belongs on every traveler’s bucket list.

Why Is Korčula Called the ‘Mini Dubrovnik’?

Korčula’s nickname, the “Mini Dubrovnik,” isn’t just a catchy phrase — it reflects a real connection between these two iconic Croatian destinations. Much like Dubrovnik, Korčula’s Old Town is surrounded by impressive medieval walls, winding cobblestone streets and historic buildings that transport you back in time.

Honestly, I had no idea Korčula even existed until I started planning my trip to Croatia. But I’m so glad I discovered it and gave it a chance. Many travelers dream of Croatia and end up following the crowds straight to Dubrovnik — and that’s such a pity.

By doing that, they miss out on uniquely charming places like Korčula, which offer all the beauty and History without the overwhelming tourist rush.

From the moment I first stepped foot on the island, Korčula felt like a secluded gem. It’s not empty—there are tourists and locals bustling around, keeping the place lively. But somehow, it feels protected, like a special secret waiting to be uncovered.

The Old Town is unbelievably charming—like a fairytale setting that feels almost too good to be true, with its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient stone buildings and those iconic red-tiled roofs gleaming in the sunlight.

Korčula is also rich in culture and tradition. One of its most fascinating highlights is the Moreska sword dance, a thrilling medieval performance unique to the island that you won’t want to miss if you visit during festival season. Plus, History buffs will be intrigued to know that Korčula is believed to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo, adding another layer of allure to this enchanting island.

If you’re like me and want a travel experience that feels genuine and a little off the beaten path, Korčula is the perfect escape. It’s a place where you can wander through quiet streets, meet friendly locals and really connect with Croatia’s rich culture and stunning nature.

What Surprised Me Most About Korčula

Before arriving, I expected Korčula to be pretty — maybe a bit sleepy, maybe a bit touristy — but what I didn’t expect was how deeply it would stick with me.

One of the first surprises was just how alive and authentic the island felt, even though it was far less crowded than other Croatian hotspots. The Old Town wasn’t empty or quiet in a dull way — it had this gentle hum to it. Kids playing in the squares, locals chatting in doorways, someone hanging laundry between stone windows above you. It felt lived-in, not staged. I didn’t feel like a tourist being funneled through some perfectly preserved postcard; I felt like I was inside the postcard, just existing there for a moment alongside everyone else.

But what surprised me the most about Korčula? The beaches — hands down.

Going in, I expected a few small rocky spots near the Old Town, maybe somewhere to dip my feet and cool off. And yes, most of the beaches close to town are rocky or pebbled, which honestly I’ve come to enjoy more than I ever expected. There’s something relaxing about lying on a big, warm flat rock and the lack of sand in your bag is always a bonus. Still, I know it’s not everyone’s idea of the perfect beach day — and I definitely wasn’t expecting anything beyond that.

But then I found the beach.

Just a short bus ride away from the Old Town is a sandy beach that completely blew me away. And I say that as someone who’s been to Thailand, the Maldives and several Caribbean islands — I’m no stranger to world-class beaches.

But this beach in Korčula? Easily one of the best I’ve ever experienced when it comes to water clarity. It wasn’t powdery white sand — the sand there has a darker tone — but honestly, if you’re not hung up on the color, you’re in for something amazing.

The water was so crystal clear I could see my entire body while swimming — every toe, every shadow. And for someone like me, who has a slightly overactive imagination and likes to know exactly what’s swimming near me, that level of visibility was… comforting, to say the least.

And the water temperature? Perfect. Not cold, not too warm — just that sweet spot where you can float around for hours without ever wanting to get out. I was hoping for some good beach days in Korčula, but honestly, it felt like a shot in the dark. I had no idea there was such a perfect beach here — and when I found it, it quickly became the highlight of my entire Croatia trip.

I ended up going back every single day. Nine hours straight, relaxing, swimming, reading, repeating. It was everything I wanted, and then some.

So, Should Korčula Be on Your Croatia Itinerary?

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia and wondering whether to include Korčula on your itinerary, my answer is a definite yes.

While Korčula may not be as famous as Dubrovnik or Hvar, this charming Croatian island offers a unique blend of medieval architecture, crystal-clear sandy beaches and authentic local culture that makes it a must-visit destination.

With its pastel-colored houses, narrow cobblestone streets and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, Rovinj looks like something straight out of a fairytale. It quickly became one of the top places to visit in Croatia on my travel list.

I saw pictures of Rovinj online years ago and I’ve been dreaming of visiting ever since

However, when I started planning my Croatia itinerary, I almost gave up on going there because accommodation prices in Rovinj were much higher than I expected. Luckily, I found a great way to visit without overspending: a day trip from nearby Pula. This budget-friendly option allowed me to explore one of the most beautiful towns in Croatia without breaking the bank.

TIP: If you’re planning to visit Rovinj from Pula, the best way might be to take the bus — renting a car and parking in Rovinj can get expensive quickly. Parking near the old town costs around €5 per hour, which adds up really fast.

I’m so glad I didn’t miss out. The moment I laid eyes on Rovinj’s colorful old town and peaceful harbor, I was truly in awe. Compared to the crowded hotspots of Croatia like Dubrovnik, Rovinj offers a more relaxed and authentic experience. It’s nowhere near a hidden gem anymore, but it’s still a perfect blend of seaside charm, History and vibrant culture.

Something else that made me fall in love with Rovinj was the incredible color of its water — turquoise, crystal clear and perfect for swimming. Even though there aren’t sandy beaches nearby, the rocky coastline only adds to the town’s unique charm and makes it a haven for lovers of pristine Adriatic waters.

🏛️ 2. Pula – Ancient Roman History Meets Coastal Charm

To be honest, I had basically no expectations for Pula when I first arrived. I chose it mostly because I found an affordable hostel there and wanted a convenient base to take day trips — like my trip to Rovinj. But I ended up really enjoying my time in Pula more than I expected.

One thing that really stood out to me in Pula was how affordable everything felt compared to other parts of Croatia. Hostel Antique was way cheaper than many places I stayed, and even supermarket prices and random cafés surprised me with how reasonable they were — making Pula a great budget-friendly place to visit in Croatia.

While there isn’t a ton to do in the city itself, Pula’s laid-back vibe felt like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise VERY busy Croatia. I won’t claim it’s one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen, but Pula had an unexpected charm that completely caught me off guard.

The History there is absolutely amazing — especially the Roman amphitheater, which left me in awe. I really didn’t expect it to be so incredibly well preserved, standing proud as one of the best examples of ancient architecture in the region.

What also makes Pula truly special, and why I believe it deserves a spot on your Croatia itinerary, is its strategic location. It’s well connected with affordable flights and it’s the perfect base for exploring the rest of Istria.

From Pula, I took easy day trips not only to Rovinj but also to other nearby hidden gems — making it an ideal home base for travelers wanting to see more of Croatia beyond the usual hotspots.

If you’re wondering whether Pula is worth visiting, I would definitely say it is! Add it to your Croatia itinerary and I really don’t think you will regret it.

🌊 3. Hvar – Glamour, History and Stunning Adriatic Views

I’ll admit it — I seriously debated skipping Hvar when I was planning my Croatia trip. All I kept hearing was how expensive and overhyped it was. I wasn’t sure it would be worth the splurge. But I also couldn’t shake the idea of spending a few blissful, beachy days on an island that looked like absolute paradise in every photo I’d ever seen.

So, I took a chance — and I’m so glad I did.

Hvar ended up being one of the absolute highlights of my entire trip. I spent some of my best days in Croatia there — lazy mornings by the clearest turquoise waters, afternoons wandering charming stone streets and evenings soaking in those dreamy island sunsets. It was everything I hoped it would be, and then some.

And here’s the best part: it wasn’t nearly as expensive as I feared. Sure, the café and restaurant prices in the city center can be outrageous (you’ll definitely pay for the view). But if you venture just a bit beyond the tourist hotspots, it’s a totally different story.

I stocked up on groceries at the local supermarket and cooked all of my meals at my hostel — which helped me keep my budget in check without missing out on the experience.

I stayed at Hostel Kapa, just outside the city center — one of the cheapest options I found and honestly a great choice. Being a bit outside helped me save even more, since the nearby shops were way more affordable than anything in town 💰

If you’re traveling on a low budget like I was, Hvar is still absolutely doable.

With a little planning and a willingness to skip the fancy seafront dinners, you can soak up all that beauty without draining your wallet.

As for the beaches — I know some people hesitate because they’re not sandy, but honestly? I didn’t mind at all. I’m super picky when it comes to swimming spots (I won’t just jump in anywhere), but the water in Hvar was incredible.

Some of the clearest I’ve ever seen! The rocky coastline and ladders might seem a bit odd at first, but I quickly got used to them… and actually started loving Croatia’s unique beach vibe.

Trust me: give it a chance and you might end up falling for it just like I did.

🏰 4. Korčula – Medieval Charm and Crystal-Clear Waters

I originally added Korčula to my itinerary for one simple reason: I wanted to spend several slow, relaxing days on an island without blowing my budget. Croatia is beautiful, but let’s be honest — it’s so expensive. So when I randomly found a great deal at a hostel in Korčula, I booked it for several nights, hoping for the best.

I stayed at Dragan’s Den Hostel — it wasn’t the fanciest place I’ve ever booked, but for the price I paid (and being on an island as amazing as Korčula), it was more than worth it.

What I didn’t expect was to end up in one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited. And I don’t say that lightly — I’ve traveled to over 50 countries, and Korčula instantly made an unforgettable impression.

I fell instantly in love with Korčula

The Old Town is pure magic — a tiny walled city by the sea, full of medieval charm and breathtaking views at every turn. People often call it “mini Dubrovnik”.

While I understand the comparison, I have to admit that I liked Korčula way more than Dubrovnik. I could barely believe my eyes when I wandered its quiet stone streets, feeling like I’d walked straight into a fairytale.

I’m absolutely obsessed with medieval towns, and honestly, Korčula exceeded even my wildest dreams. It almost felt too good to be true.

Korčula quickly became one of my favorite places not just in Croatia, but in all of Europe, and maybe even the World.

Exploring its narrow cobblestone streets and soaking in the unique vibe was such an unforgettable experience. Every step I took, I felt grateful that places like Korčula still exist, offering a true glimpse into History alongside stunning Adriatic beauty.

But Korčula didn’t just steal my heart with its beauty — it also surprised me with one of the best beaches I’ve seen in my life. And yes, that includes places like Thailand, the Maldives and the Caribbean. If you think Croatia only offers rocky shores and pebbly beaches, think again. This beach in Korčula had soft sand (not powdery white, but still amazing), crystal-clear water with no waves and a perfect, almost pool-like temperature.

I ended up spending entire days there — literally 9 hours straight — just swimming, sunbathing and living my best life.

If you visit just one island in Croatia, make it Korčula. I promise, you won’t regret it.

🌴 5. Lopud – A Peaceful Island Escape Close to Dubrovnik

I visited Lopud on a day trip from Dubrovnik — and honestly, I wish I had stayed longer. Just a short ferry ride from the city, this tiny, car-free island felt like another world. It was quiet, peaceful and unbelievably charming — exactly the kind of place that makes you want to ditch your plans and stay forever.

Even though I didn’t find any cheap accommodations on the island and the food options I came across were a bit pricey, Lopud totally won me over. I spent the day walking along the coast, swimming in the warm Adriatic and relaxing at Šunj Beach, one of Croatia’s rare sandy beaches. It’s wide, shallow and perfect for a slow day in the sun.

What really stuck with me was the thought of what Lopud must feel like after the day trippers leave. I can only imagine how magical that peaceful island becomes in the evening, with the quiet streets, sea breeze, and golden light — a true slice of Croatian paradise. If you’re visiting Dubrovnik and craving a break from the crowds, don’t skip Lopud. Even just a few hours there were unforgettable.

Croatia may be best known for Dubrovnik — and sure, it’s a beautiful city — but as my trip proved, there’s so much more to see beyond the usual tourist trail. From fairytale towns like Rovinj to peaceful islands like Lopud, this country is full of unforgettable places that often get overlooked. Whether you’re a beach lover, a History buff or someone looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation, these five spots absolutely deserve a place on your Croatia itinerary. Stockholm is a city bursting with History, culture and incredible experiences — so many, that deciding what to include on your itinerary can be overwhelming. After living in Stockholm for nine years, I can say that one of my favorite ways to dive into the city’s rich heritage is by visiting its museums.

If you’re like me—a bit of a museum nerd—you’ll find out that Stockholm’s museums offer so much more than just exhibits. They are gateways to stories, traditions and everyday life from Sweden’s past. And among all of them, there’s one that stands out as truly extraordinary: Skansen.

What Is Skansen?

Skansen was founded in 1891 and was the first museum of its kind in the world.

Its mission? To preserve and showcase traditional Swedish life. That’s why almost 200 historic buildings were relocated there from every corner of Sweden. From rural farmhouses and town shops to a medieval church, a pharmacy, a post office and even a school, Skansen offers a walk through centuries of Swedish culture, architecture and daily life.

🏠 Explore Historic Buildings

TOWN QUARTER: this is one of my favorite parts of Skansen! A charming cobblestone area that recreates life in a 19th-century Swedish town. Here, you’ll find historic buildings like the bookbinder’s workshop, an old bakery, a pharmacy, a woodcarver’s studio, and more — each offering a glimpse into the crafts and daily life of the time. Not all buildings are open at all times, but keep an eye out for signs that say “Öppet” (Open). Step inside wherever you can — many houses have staff dressed in traditional clothes who are happy to share stories and demonstrate old skills. It’s one of the most immersive and atmospheric parts of Skansen.

THE FARMSTEADS: one of the most fascinating things to see at Skansen is its collection of authentic Swedish farmsteads, each transported from different regions of the country and carefully rebuilt. These historic buildings show how families lived and worked in rural Sweden centuries ago. A highlight is Moragården, a farmstead from Dalarna with buildings dating as far back as the 1300s — including the oldest structure in all of Skansen. You’ll also find Älvrosgården, a timber farmhouse from Härjedalen in the north; and Skånegården, a grand southern Swedish farm with whitewashed walls and thatched roofs. These traditional homes are part of what makes Skansen one of the best places to experience Swedish History in Stockholm. If you see a door marked “open”, don’t hesitate — step inside and discover how people lived centuries ago.

KOLONI CABINS: These colorful little houses are one of the coziest and most charming parts of Skansen. Koloni houses are a long-standing Swedish tradition — small summer cottages where people escape city life to enjoy nature, sunshine and gardening. After months of winter, Swedes cherish these green spaces as a place to relax, grow flowers and vegetables, and soak up every bit of summer light. At Skansen, you can stroll through a beautiful row of koloni houses, often in full bloom during the summer months. The gardens are lovingly maintained, and if you’re lucky, you’ll meet one of Skansen’s costumed interpreters, ready to share stories about the history of these cabins and the people who once tended them.

UPPER CLASS HOMES: Skansen doesn’t just showcase rural life — it also features beautiful upper-class homes that reflect how Sweden’s wealthier families lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most impressive of them all is Skogaholms Herrgård. This elegant 18th-century manor house, originally from Södermanland, was moved to Skansen in the 1930s and beautifully preserved to showcase the lifestyle of Sweden’s upper class in the 1700s. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and painted in classic Swedish red, the manor’s exterior is impressive on its own — but step inside (when open) and you’ll find lavishly decorated interiors, complete with painted ceilings, antique furniture and rooms that once hosted refined dinners and social gatherings.

SEGLORA CHURCH: One of the most striking buildings at Skansen is the Seglora Church, a charming red wooden church originally built around 1729 in the village of Seglora, located in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. It was carefully relocated to Skansen in 1916. With its simple yet elegant design, candlelit interior and hand-painted decor, the church offers a peaceful atmosphere that feels truly timeless. It is still used today for weddings and concerts, so you might even catch a live performance or hear the organ’s melodies echoing through the walls. Step inside to admire the detailed woodwork and experience a quiet moment in a building that has stood for nearly 300 years.

Skansen’s Nordic Zoo offers a wonderful opportunity to see some of Sweden’s most iconic wildlife up close in naturalistic settings.

You’ll find majestic moose wandering through spacious enclosures, elusive lynx hiding among the trees, beautiful brown bears, wolves and even reindeer—all animals native to Sweden’s forests and wild landscapes.

The zoo is especially popular with families, but animal lovers of all ages will appreciate the chance to learn about these species and their habitats. Educational signs and knowledgeable staff help visitors understand the animals’ roles in Swedish nature and folklore. ☕ Enjoy a Traditional Swedish Fika

No visit to Skansen is complete without indulging in a traditional Swedish fika — a cherished coffee break featuring freshly brewed coffee and a sweet treat, usually a cinnamon bun.

At Kafé Petissan, you’ll find one of the most atmospheric fika spots in Stockholm. It’s absolutely perfect to relax and soak in the museum’s historic charm, plus the cakes and pastries are some of the best I’ve had in Sweden!

Whether you choose to sit by candlelight indoors during the cozy winter months or enjoy the sunshine on the outdoor terrace in summer, fika here is a perfect way to recharge while experiencing a beloved Swedish tradition.

Stockholm is an incredibly beautiful city with many spots offering stunning skyline views, but Skansen stands out as one of the best.

Perched on a hill on Djurgården Island, Skansen’s vast grounds provide multiple viewpoints where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city. From there, you can even see the famous amusement park Gröna Lund up close and hear the excited screams of visitors riding the thrilling roller coasters.

Taking in these breathtaking vistas adds a magical touch to your visit and gives you a unique perspective on Stockholm’s charm.

🕯️🌼 Experience Seasonal Celebrations

Sweden is home to beautifully rich traditions that have fascinated me ever since I moved here in 2016.

While you can experience these cultural celebrations throughout the country, the best place to immerse yourself in them in Stockholm is undoubtedly Skansen. If you visit during the summer, you’ll have the chance to celebrate Midsummer alongside the locals — a magical event filled with flowers, dancing, and joy. Another great option is celebrating Midsummer in Vaxholm.

During autumn, don’t miss Skansen’s vibrant Autumn Market and a variety of seasonal events celebrating the beauty and traditions of the fall season.

In the winter months, Skansen hosts a famous Christmas Market and the enchanting Lucia concerts, which remains my absolute favorite Swedish tradition.

🐍 Visit the Skansen Aquarium (Separate Ticket Required)

Tucked inside the main Skansen grounds, the Skansen Aquarium is a hidden gem that many visitors overlook — but it’s well worth a visit, especially if you’re traveling with kids or love animals. This small but fascinating indoor space features everything from exotic fish and reptiles to monkeys, lemurs, spiders and even crocodiles.

One of the highlights is the walk-through lemur enclosure, where the animals roam freely just a few feet away. It’s interactive, educational and a fun contrast to the outdoor museum experience.

👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes
Skansen is huge and you’ll be doing a lot of walking — often on cobblestones or uneven paths. Comfortable shoes are a must if you want to enjoy your day without sore feet.

🧥 Bring a Light Jacket
Swedish weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. It’s always smart to bring a light jacket or an extra layer, just in case the temperature drops or a breeze picks up.

⏳ How Long Does It Take to Visit Skansen?
You can easily spend 4–6 hours at Skansen — or even a full day if you want to explore all the historic buildings, visit the zoo and enjoy a fika or picnic. If you’re short on time, you can still see the highlights in 2–3 hours, but Skansen is best enjoyed at a slower pace.

Skansen is truly one of my favorite places in the world — and without a doubt one of the best museums to visit in Stockholm. It offers a rare and unforgettable mix of history, culture, nature and tradition, all brought to life in the most beautiful setting. While the entrance fee isn’t the cheapest, the 25€ ticket is absolutely worth it for everything you get to see, learn and experience inside this iconic open-air museum. Whether it’s your first time in Stockholm or your tenth, Skansen is a place that will leave a lasting impression — and keep you coming back for more.

🚶‍♀️🧘 Fewer Tourists, More Tranquility

While Lake Bled often draws crowds, Bohinj remains quiet and peaceful — even in early summer. I visited in early June, just before peak season, and I was honestly shocked at how few people were around.

I expected at least some tourist bustle, but instead, I found myself almost completely alone on the trails. A few people were swimming and there was a group of local teenagers camping by the lake — but that was basically it. No lines, no noise, no crowds.

It felt like I’d stumbled onto a secret — a place that’s beautiful enough to be famous, yet somehow still under the radar. If you’re the kind of traveler who craves quiet moments, space to breathe and a slower, more authentic connection with nature, Lake Bohinj needs to be on your travel bucket list.

When I visited, I wasn’t able to go inside. However, just seeing this beautiful church by the lake was still one of the highlights of my trip to Slovenia. Its picturesque exterior and tranquil lakeside setting make it a memorable sight no matter when you visit.

🚶‍♂️ Walk or Cycle Around the Lake

My favorite way to take in Bohinj’s beauty was walking along one side of the lake. It took me about 2 hours, mostly because I kept stopping to snap photos of the incredible views. From shimmering waters to the surrounding alpine peaks, I just couldn’t stop taking pictures of that beautiful hidden gem!

What truly surprised me was how peaceful and quiet it was. Despite visiting in early June, I barely saw anyone else on the trails. This calmness made the walk feel almost meditative. It was perfect for some quiet introspection and simply soaking in nature without distractions.

The full loop around the lake is roughly 12 kilometers and mostly flat, making it accessible for all fitness levels and even for families. Along the way, you’ll discover peaceful picnic spots, hidden little beaches and stunning panoramic views that reward every step (or pedal), turning the journey into a truly refreshing escape.

🏊 Swim in the Lake

During the warmer months, Lake Bohinj’s crystal-clear water is incredibly inviting. Honestly, I really wished I had brought a swimsuit with me. The water looked so clean and refreshing, and several people were already swimming, enjoying the sunshine with the Julian Alps rising dramatically in the background.

It’s the perfect way to cool off after a hike or bike ride. There are plenty of safe spots with gentle, shallow shorelines, making it ideal for swimmers of all ages — or for just dipping your feet in and soaking up the view.

🛶 Paddle on the Lake

Rent a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard and experience Lake Bohinj from the water—it’s one of the best ways to truly connect with the landscape. The lake is exceptionally clean and calm, making it ideal even for beginners.

Early mornings are especially magical: the surface is glassy and still, the mountains cast long reflections across the water and there’s often a serene silence broken only by the dip of your paddle.

Bohinj is a fantastic place for water activities and it’s obvious why it’s so popular among outdoor enthusiasts. While I was there, I watched an entire group of teenagers—likely part of a summer camp—paddling across the lake in formation, laughing and learning together under the watchful eye of their instructor. It looked like an unforgettable experience.

The setting is perfect for that kind of adventure: dramatic alpine peaks rise all around and the views from the middle of the lake are simply breathtaking.

There are several spots along the shore where you can rent boats, particularly near Ribčev Laz and Ukanc. Whether you’re in the mood for a peaceful solo paddle or a shared outing with friends or family, it’s an easy and rewarding way to explore Lake Bohinj from a unique perspective.

⛪ See the Church of the Holy Spirit

While walking along the lakeside, I unexpectedly came across the charming Church of the Holy Spirit. This quaint church, with its distinctive wooden bell tower and peaceful atmosphere, felt like a hidden gem nestled right by the water.

It was closed when I visited, so unfortunately I couldn’t admire the inside of the church. But seeing it from the outside, set against the stunning mountainous backdrop and with literally no one around, felt completely unreal — like stepping into a peaceful, untouched moment in time.

Visiting this serene spot was a lovely reminder of the region’s rich cultural heritage, perfectly complementing the natural beauty surrounding Lake Bohinj. It’s also a fantastic place to pause, reflect and capture some beautiful photos of Slovenia’s gorgeous countryside.

🏞️ go to Savica Waterfall (Even If I Didn’t)

One of the most popular sights near Lake Bohinj is Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica)—a stunning 78-meter cascade nestled in a narrow alpine gorge. As the source of the Sava Bohinjka River, it’s a natural landmark and a wonderful attraction for visitors to the area.

To visit Savica Waterfall, you can either drive to the parking lot near the entrance, take a local bus to Slap Savica/waterfall or hike from the Lake Bohinj area or nearby villages. The hike is well-known for its beauty but it includes about 550 stone steps, making it a challenging climb—especially when the trail is wet and slippery after rain.

Since I didn’t have a car and the weather had been rainy, I decided to skip the hike.

🚡 Ride the Vogel Cable Car

One popular activity near Lake Bohinj is taking the Vogel cable car, which offers stunning views of the lake and the Julian Alps. When I went, I expected incredible mountain scenery—and the views from the top were indeed beautiful.

That said, the 30€ round-trip ticket price felt really overpriced for such a short ride. For budget travelers, it might not seem worth it just for the views. However, if you’re planning to hike from the top or aren’t worried about the cost, the cable car is a convenient way to reach Vogel Mountain and enjoy its panoramic scenery.

📍 How to Get to Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is nestled in Slovenia’s beautiful Julian Alps but getting there is easier than you might think. Whether you’re coming from Ljubljana or Bled, here are the main ways to reach this stunning destination:

🚗 By Car

Driving to Lake Bohinj gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to explore the surrounding area at your own pace. From Ljubljana, it’s about a 1-hour drive (around 80 km). The route is scenic and well-signposted. Parking is available near the main villages around the lake, such as Ribčev Laz.

Renting a car for your trip to Slovenia is a very convenient option. Check out car rental deals here to find the best prices and vehicles for your trip. Having a car lets you easily visit nearby attractions and explore the Julian Alps without relying on public transport schedules.

🚌 By Bus

I took the bus from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj and it was basically the same bus route that stops in Bled before continuing on. This makes it easy to visit both lakes using public transport, as the bus connects these popular spots smoothly.

The main stops for Bohinj are usually Bohinjsko jezero/lake or Bohinj Ukanc, and buses run regularly—though schedules vary seasonally, so it’s best to check timetables ahead of time.

Tickets can be purchased at the Ljubljana bus station, but they only accept cash. Since all ATMs in Ljubljana charged fees to withdraw money, I chose to buy my tickets online instead. However, you still need a printed paper ticket to board, so I had to stop by the station to get help printing mine before the trip.

Taking the bus is a budget-friendly and hassle-free way to get around if you don’t want to rent a car.

If you’d rather skip the hassle of public transport or driving, joining a guided day trip is a great option. Whether you’re chasing sunny summer days for swimming and hiking, colorful autumn landscapes, snowy winter adventures or the fresh bloom of spring, the best time to visit really depends on what kind of experience you want to have.

Each season brings its own charm and activities, so planning your trip around your interests will help you make the most of this stunning Slovenian hidden gem.

Summer (June to August) ☀️

If you’re dreaming of warm, sunny days filled with swimming in crystal-clear waters, kayaking or hiking the surrounding trails, you should visit Lake Bohinj during summer. Temperatures are usually between 20–25°C, perfect for outdoor adventures. This is also festival season in nearby villages, adding a cultural aspect to your trip. Just be prepared for more visitors, as summer is the peak tourist period.

I visited on June 5th and the weather was absolutely perfect! Not too hot for walking around the lake, warm enough to go for a swim if I had taken my swimsuit… And not many people at all!

So I would actually say that the beginning of June is the best time to visit Lake Bohinj.

Autumn (September to November) 🍂

Autumn transforms Lake Bohinj into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and yellows. It’s ideal for peaceful hikes and photography, with cooler but still pleasant weather. The crowds thin out, giving you a more tranquil experience to soak up the breathtaking fall foliage.

Winter (December to February) ❄️

Winter at Lake Bohinj is a wonderland for snow lovers. The area becomes a gateway for skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating on the frozen lake. Surrounded by snowy peaks, it’s a magical time for cozy mountain lodges and hot drinks by the fire. Keep in mind that some hiking trails close due to snow, but the winter scenery is unforgettable.

I visited during summer but I would definitely love to go back to see that gorgeous landscape painted in white!

Spring (March to May) 🌸

Spring is a fresh start at Lake Bohinj, when wildflowers bloom and the waterfalls roar with melted snow. Spring visitors get to enjoy peacefulness before the summer rush, with opportunities to spot wildlife and witness the landscape coming back to life after winter.

While it’s possible to visit Lake Bohinj on a day trip from Ljubljana or Bled, staying overnight lets you experience a quieter and more peaceful side of this beautiful Slovenian lake. Especially in the early morning and late evening, when most day-trippers have left.

If you’re short on time, a day trip to Lake Bohinj is still worth it. But if you want to swim, hike, rent a boat or simply slow down and enjoy nature, spending a night or two here is highly recommended.

💎 Luxury: Hotel Bohinj — Probably the most stylish and modern place to stay in Lake Bohinj, Hotel Bohinj is right in Ribčev Laz, just a short walk from the lakeshore. It’s sleek, newly renovated and designed with sustainability in mind. The views of the surrounding mountains are absolutely gorgeous! And their spa and outdoor whirlpool are a great bonus. It’s not cheap—but if you’re in the mood to splurge somewhere serene and beautiful, this is the spot.
🏡 Mid-Range: Apartmaji Triglav — Located in Stara Fužina, these alpine-style apartments offer the perfect balance between comfort and value. Apartmaji Triglav gives you apartment-style living with hotel-like amenities—there’s even a wellness area with a sauna and hot tub. The location is peaceful, the views are stunnin, and you’re just a short walk from the lake. It’s ideal for couples or families who want a bit more space and flexibility.
💰 Budget: Hostel pod Voglom — If you’re traveling on a tight budget, Hostel pod Voglom is the best-value option right by the lake. It’s set in a beautiful forested area just outside Ribčev Laz, with super easy access to the water and a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe. You can rent bikes, book activities or just chill by the lake. It’s basic but friendly, and perfectly located. If you’re after affordability without missing the lakefront atmosphere, this hostel is a solid pick.

Less polished but far more raw and rewarding than its famous neighbor Lake Bled, it’s the perfect destination for nature lovers and curious travelers alike. After taking a day trip there — and completely falling in love with it — my answer is an instant, wholehearted: YES.

But it’s more than just beautiful. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures, romantic getaways, or simply soaking up stunning scenery, Lake Bled offers something for every kind of traveler.

It’s also incredibly easy to reach — just a short drive or bus ride away from the capital. This makes it a perfect day trip from Ljubljana or even nearby countries. Or better yet, stay a few days and soak in the calm — Lake Bled is also an ideal place to slow down and enjoy a peaceful escape.

What to See & Do in Lake Bled

Lake Bled may be small, but it’s packed with things to see and do.

From fairy-tale sights to active adventures and local treats, you’ll have plenty of things to get busy with there. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or staying several days, here are the highlights you won’t want to miss:

🚶‍♀️ Walk Around the Lake and Soak In the Views

One of the best ways to experience Lake Bled is by simply walking the entire loop around the lake. It’s about 6 kilometers of mostly flat and easy trails that take around 1.5 to 2 hours to cover at a relaxed pace.

This loop is perfect if you want to stretch your legs and take in the stunning scenery without rushing.

🏊‍♀️ Go for a Swim in the Lake

If you’re visiting Lake Bled in the warmer months, don’t forget to pack your swimsuit. The lake is perfect for a refreshing swim. The water is clean, calm and surprisingly warm during the summer, often reaching around 25°C in July and August.

Around the lake, I spotted three amazing swimming areas — some with sandy entrances gently sloping into the water and others featuring wooden floating platforms where people sunbathed and jumped in. Whether you like lounging by the shore or diving off a dock, there’s something for every water lover there.

I’ll be honest — I usually don’t swim in lakes because I’m pretty picky about the water. So I didn’t even bring my swimsuit this time. But wow, Lake Bled was literally amazing! I was so mad at myself for not taking my swimsuit! Don’t make the same mistake as me when you go there.

🛶 Take a Traditional Pletna Boat to Bled Island

One of Lake Bled’s most iconic experiences is visiting Bled Island, home to the charming Church of the Assumption and its famous wishing bell. The best way to get there is by hopping on a traditional pletna boat — a flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed by a standing oarsman.

This centuries-old tradition adds such a unique and authentic touch to your visit.

It’s not the cheapest activity to do in Lake Bled, so it’s wise to factor this into your travel budget. Many of the Lake Bled rowboat rental spots accept card payments, making the process smooth and convenient for travelers. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly and more personal way to reach Bled Island, renting a rowboat is definitely worth considering.

For one of the most iconic views of Lake Bled, don’t miss the short but steep hike to Ojstrica Viewpoint. This popular spot offers a postcard-perfect panorama of the lake, with Bled Island in the center, framed by the Julian Alps in the background.

It’s a favorite among photographers and hikers, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light adds a magical glow to the scenery.

The trailhead starts near the western shore of the lake and takes about 20–30 minutes to reach the top. The climb can be a bit challenging in parts, especially if the ground is slippery, so wear good shoes.

🍰 Try the Famous Bled Cream Cake (Kremšnita)

One of the most talked-about things to do in Lake Bled is trying the traditional Bled cream cake, known locally as kremšnita. This layered dessert made with puff pastry, custard and whipped cream is a staple in the region and hugely popular with visitors.

That said, I was honestly shocked by the prices. Many cafés around the lake were selling a single slice for €7.50, which felt like a total tourist trap.

Even the original and most “authentic” café near the lake, which is known for creating the first Bled cream cake, was charging €6.80 per slice. To be honest, that still felt too steep for me, so I decided to skip it.

But if you’re set on trying it—and many people are—it makes the most sense to get it at this cafe near the lake, where you’re at least getting the real deal. It’s probably worth it for the experience if you’re curious or love desserts, even if it’s a bit pricey.

Just a short walk from the lakeshore, St. Martin’s Church is a peaceful and often overlooked spot that adds a touch of quiet charm to your visit to Lake Bled.

This beautiful neo-Gothic church, built in the early 20th century, stands at the foot of the cliff beneath Bled Castle and offers a lovely contrast to the more crowded tourist sites. The interior is simple yet elegant, with detailed frescoes and a calm atmosphere that is perfect for moment of reflection.

How to Get to Lake Bled: All Transportation Options Explained

One of the reasons Lake Bled is such a popular destination is how easy it is to get there — especially from Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana. Whether you prefer the freedom of a rental car or the ease of public transportation, here are all the ways you can reach this fairy-tale spot:

🚗 By Car

Driving from Ljubljana to Lake Bled takes around 45 minutes. The roads are smooth and well-marked and the scenery along the way is gorgeous.

Renting a car is ideal if you want to visit nearby attractions like Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj or the surrounding Triglav National Park. Having your own car will definitely give you lots of freedom to explore Slovenia’s wonderful Nature!

One downside of renting a car for your trip to Slovenia is that parking near the lake can be a problem. There are parking spaces available, but during summer they can fill up fast. If you decide to rent a car to visit Lake Bled, try to arrive there early in the morning.

Another thing to be aware of is how expensive it can be to park there. Hourly rates seem to start at 3€, so it can add up really quickly for a day trip to Lake Bled.

🚌 By Bus

In my opinion, the easiest and cheapest way to get to Lake Bled is by bus from Ljubljana. The journey takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. There are frequent departures — during peak hours, there is a bus every 15 minutes.

I paid €11.80 for a return ticket, which felt very reasonable — especially given how pricey Slovenia can be overall.

You can buy your bus ticket at Ljubljana’s main bus station, but note that only cash is accepted at the ticket office. I couldn’t find any ATMs in the city that didn’t charge high fees, so I decided to buy my tickets online, in order to pay by card.

The best option is to buy your ticket online through this website. That’s where I bought my tickets so I could pay by card, which was super helpful and allowed me to avoid ATM fees.

However, mobile versions aren’t accepted on the buses, so you’ll still need to stop by the ticket office at the station to have your ticket printed by the staff.

Also, don’t stress too much about selecting an exact return time. I chose a specific hour, but was able to board an earlier bus without any issues. If you’re unsure when you’ll be coming back to Ljubljana, just pick any return time — buses are generally flexible.

🚆 By Train (Wouldn’t Recommend)

You can also take a train from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled station, with about 15 to 20 departures per day. The ride takes between 1 to 2 hours.

While it’s scenic and comfortable, it’s not the most convenient option.

Be aware that the train does not drop you off at the lake itself — it stops in Lesce-Bled, which is about 5 km away from Lake Bled. From there, you’ll need to take a 10-minute local bus or a taxi to reach the lakeshore.

This route might make sense if you’re specifically interested in visiting Lesce — a cute, sleepy Slovenian town. But to be honest, there isn’t much to see there. Unless you’re really into train travel or happen to be staying in Lesce, the bus is a much better way to get to Lake Bled.

I visited Lake Bled in June and absolutely loved the experience. The warm weather was perfect for relaxing by the lake and the hiking trails were so beautiful and lush. June is a great month to enjoy Lake Bled before the peak summer crowds arrive.

Lake Bled is like a winter wonderland during these months. While some activities close for the season, it’s a magical time to visit—especially if you enjoy quiet walks or visiting Bled Castle in a snowy setting.

🌸 Spring (April – June)

Spring is one of the most pleasant times to visit Lake Bled. The weather starts to warm up, there are still no crowds and everything is in bloom. It’s perfect for hiking, cycling and enjoying peaceful views of the lake.

I visited Lake Bled on June 6th, and it was absolutely perfect! The weather was warm enough for swimming but still comfortable for walking around the lake. I highly recommend visiting in early to mid-June for the best balance of pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

☀️ Summer (July – August)

Summer is peak season at Lake Bled. The weather is warm and sunny, which is perfect for swimming, rowing and enjoying the lakeside cafes. But be prepared for more crowds and higher prices.

If you’re visiting Slovenia on a budget, I wouldn’t recommend going during the summer months. Slovenia is already a bit pricey, and costs tend to spike even more in peak season.

On top of that, summer can bring seriously high temperatures, which might make it harder to fully enjoy the beauty of Lake Bled.

🍂 Autumn (September – October)

Autumn is a fantastic time for peaceful sightseeing and stunning foliage around Lake Bled. The crowds thin out, the comfortable temperatures come back and the lake reflects golden trees, creating perfect photo ops.

I loved visiting in the beautiful June weather but I would love to go back and see Lake Bled in autumn! The fall colors in Slovenia must be so gorgeous.

🏨 Where to Stay in Lake Bled

Like I mentioned earlier, Lake Bled is a very popular day trip—especially from Ljubljana or even nearby countries. I only visited for a day trip as well but honestly, I wish I had stayed longer.

The place completely charmed me and I kept imagining how peaceful it must be in the early morning or late evening, after the day-trippers leave. I’m already dreaming of going back just to spend a few nights there and soak it all in at a slower pace.

If you’re considering an overnight stay (or more), here are some great places to stay in Lake Bled for every budget and travel style:

💎 Luxury: Grand Hotel Toplice — Probably the most iconic hotel in Lake Bled, Grand Hotel Toplice sits right on the lakeshore with unbeatable views. It’s absolutely stunning—full of old-world charm, elegance and a touch of nostalgia. That said, it’s definitely a splurge. I’d save this one for a special occasion when you’re ready to treat yourself.
🏡 Mid-Range: Hotel Park – Sava Hotels & Resorts — This centrally located hotel is one of the best mid-range options in Lake Bled. It’s right by the lake, so you’re just steps away from the famous walking path and its stunning views. With modern rooms, a wellness center and an indoor pool overlooking the lake, Hotel Park strikes a perfect balance between comfort, convenience and value. BONUS: it’s home to the original Bled cream cake!
💰 Budget: Hostel LakeBled — If you’re traveling on a low budget but still want to stay overnight in Lake Bled, your best bet is a hostel—and this one offers great value. Hostel LakeBled is one of the most affordable places in the area. While it’s not right on the lake, it’s only about a 20-minute walk to the shoreline, which is totally manageable if you don’t mind a bit of a stroll. If I go back (which I plan to!), this is exactly where I’d stay.

👙 Can you swim in Lake Bled? Absolutely! It’s an experience you shouldn’t miss! The water is crystal clear and incredibly clean. Trust me, this comes from a beach lover who’s pretty picky about swimming spots, and Lake Bled definitely made the cut.
💶 Do you need cash? You can pay with card in bigger restaurants, but I’d still advise carrying some cash with you. Cash is still surprisingly present in Slovenia. ⚠️ TIP: withdraw € before you go to Slovenia! I didn’t find one single ATM in Slovenia that didn’t charge fees of at least 5€.
🥪 What should you pack? Definitely pack a picnic! Food around Lake Bled can be pricey, so if you’re traveling on a budget, having snacks and meals in your backpack will save you money—and keep you energized during your day of exploring. And if you’re visiting in the warmer months, don’t forget your towel and swimwear. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on swimming in the crystal-clear lake—something I regret not doing myself!
👧 Is Lake Bled family-friendly? It really is! I saw so many families with young kids enjoying their time there. Lake Bled is perfect for nature activities and spending relaxing days swimming in the lake with your children.

Europe’s Soviet Secret: Inside Transnistria, the Country That Doesn’t Exist

Looking for a travel experience that feels like stepping into a Cold War-era time capsule? Tucked away in Eastern Europe is a place that isn’t officially recognized by any country. Yet, it functions like one.

It has its own borders, flag, currency and even a KGB-style police force. Welcome to Transnistria, a breakaway state inside Moldova that offers one of the most surreal travel experiences in the world.

What is Transnistria?

Transnistria (or Pridnestrovie, as they like to call themselves) is a breakaway region located in eastern Moldova — but you won’t find it on the map. That’s because, officially, it doesn’t exist.

No country in the World recognizes Transnistria as independent, yet it functions like a fully separate state within the official borders of Moldova.

It has its own border control, currency, flag, national anthem, military and even its own license plates. In practice, it operates as a de facto country — just without international recognition.

While it claims independence, the region heavily relies on economic aid, political backing and military presence from Russia. They are treated as a loyal outpost in Eastern Europe and russian troops are still stationed there. Russian ruble is widely accepted alongside the local currency and Russian is one of the official languages.

How Transnistria Became an Unrecognized State

When I first heard about Transnistria, I asked myself: How can a fully functioning but unrecognized country exist inside Moldova? It turns out, the answer lies in the collapse of the Soviet Union and the deep divide it left behind.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Moldova began distancing itself from the USSR. They were seeking independence and wanted to create closer ties with Romania and the European Union. Many Moldovans were eager to break ties with Moscow and reclaim their cultural identity after decades under Soviet control.

However, not everyone in the country supported that direction. There is region with a large Russian-speaking population — now known as Transnistria — and it resisted Moldova’s pro-European shift. This area remained strongly pro-Russia and feared being absorbed into a Romanian-style national identity.

In 1990, Transnistrian leaders declared independence from Moldova, establishing what they called the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

A brief but violent war broke out in 1992, leading to a ceasefire but no official resolution. Ever since, Transnistria has operated as a de facto independent state but it remains unrecognized by the international community.

Is It Safe to Visit Transnistria?

If you Google “Is Transnistria safe to visit?”, most official sources will say no. Foreign ministries and embassies advise against non-essential travel. The main reason is that Transnistria is an unrecognized state, meaning your home country won’t have an embassy or consular presence there. If something goes wrong, you can’t rely on your usual diplomatic protections.

I was skeptical, too. The idea of visiting a self-declared republic with no international recognition sounded risky.

But once I arrived, I was genuinely surprised by how safe I felt in Transnistria. There’s no active conflict, the streets of Tiraspol were quiet and orderly, and locals were friendly and curious. While it’s true that the region is politically sensitive — and technically still part of Moldova — everyday life felt calm and secure.

Yes, there’s always a slim chance of geopolitical tension flaring up (this is a Russian-backed region, after all). But let’s be honest: the chances of something like a sudden military annexation happening during your short trip are very low.

In terms of personal safety, I actually felt safer in Transnistria than in many Western European countries. Crime — especially petty theft — seemed almost nonexistent. In one church, I saw kilos of gold on display behind a simple glass case. That would never last a day in many countries!

So, is Transnistria safe to visit? Surprisingly, yes — as long as you go in informed, respectful and prepared. Just remember: there are no embassies to bail you out. But for the average traveler, it’s a peaceful and eye-opening destination.

How To Visit Transnistria?

There are two ways to visit Transnistria: on your own or with a guided tour.

If you’re an experienced traveler who enjoys going off the beaten path, you can definitely get there independently. Regular buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) run from Chișinău to Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria. If you want to stay in Transnistria overnight, there are a few hotels and guesthouses where you can stay. The border crossing process is usually smooth — you’ll just need your passport and will be issued a temporary migration card.

That said, I don’t think that is the best to visit Transnistria.

Personally, while I was eager to see this unique Soviet-style breakaway state, I didn’t feel confident visiting alone — and I’m glad I didn’t. The region is politically sensitive, it’s not a well-documented destination and it can be confusing to navigate without local knowledge.

But for me, the biggest barrier was the language: Russian is the main language and English is barely spoken. That can become a serious issue if anything goes wrong and you’re there alone and unable to communicate.

That’s why I decided to join this small group tour from Chișinău. It turned out to be the perfect choice for me.

Our Russian-speaking guide not only made everything easier logistically, but also provided fascinating insights into daily life, politics and the complex identity of the region. His wife was originally from Transnistria and still had family living there, which added a truly personal and special touch to the tour. Plus, having someone who knew the place inside and out made me feel much more secure.

So while independent travel to Transnistria is entirely possible, I think that a guided tour is the best option if you value peace of mind, cultural context and ease of travel. I booked mine on Get Your Guide and had a great experience, but Viator has some very well-rated tours to Transnistria as well.

Why You Should Visit Transnistria

Transnistria is one of those rare places that feel like stepping back in time. It’s such a hidden gem for curious travelers looking for something truly different. Here’s why this unrecognized country deserves a spot on your travel bucket list.

☭ It’s a Soviet Time Capsule Like No Other

When I arrived in Transnistria, I was absolutely shocked by what I saw. I had read a lot about the region and expected a strongly pro-Russian society, but I wasn’t prepared to step into such a perfectly preserved time capsule of the USSR.

Transnistria refuses to let go of its Soviet past — they openly celebrate it and show their pride everywhere. Walking the streets, you’ll spot Soviet symbols, red stars and even statues of Lenin standing tall, just like they did decades ago.

This love for the Soviet era extends beyond monuments. Even the mundane aspects of daily life feel frozen in time: stores look like they’re straight out of the 1980s, cars resemble Soviet memorabilia and many people still dress in styles typical of that era.

Everywhere I looked, it was like taking a trip back several decades. But the part that really stood out was when our tour guide asked if we wanted to eat at a fancy restaurant or try something more local and authentic. Naturally, we chose the local option — and what awaited us was a genuine Soviet dining experience unlike anything I’d had before.

🍲 A Meal Straight Out of The USSR – The Soviet Cantina Experience

Our guide took us to a local cantina that felt like stepping into a living museum of the USSR.

The walls were covered with Soviet posters, red banners and portraits of Lenin. There were old radios, faded propaganda slogans and even a hammer and sickle hanging above the entrance to the kitchen. Every corner was packed with details — it was clear this place took pride in its theme.

The food matched the setting: classic Soviet dishes like borscht with sour cream, potatoes, cabbage rolls and a meat cutlet. The staff didn’t speak any English, but they were so friendly and helpful that a bit of pointing and gesturing was all we needed — and our guide stepped in to help with the Russian when things got tricky.

Eating at a Soviet Cantina was such an authentic experience in Transnistria

Locals came in for lunch, chatting in Russian and lining up with their trays. It didn’t feel like a tourist spot at all — just a place where the Soviet spirit lives on, both in the menu and the decor. It was one of the most unique and unexpected parts of my trip to Transnistria.

💰 Plastic Money? Only in Transnistria

Before visiting Transnistria, I’d heard about their bright and colorful plastic coins — a limited edition currency that looks more like poker chips than traditional money. I was eager to see these Transnistrian plastic rubles in use, but it turns out locals don’t use them anymore.

They were introduced years ago as a special release and have since mostly disappeared from circulation.

Determined to get my hands on a set, our guide helped me find a small store that still had some left — and I ended up buying the last complete set available. The coins came in various colors and denominations, all in pristine condition. Owning that final full collection felt like holding a rare piece of Transnistria’s unusual monetary History.

Though no longer used in daily life, these plastic coins perfectly capture the quirky charm of Transnistria — a place where even the currency tells a unique story.

🤝 Surprisingly Welcoming Locals

A big part of what made my trip to Transnistria so memorable was the people. Despite the region’s complicated reputation, the locals were incredibly kind and approachable — even though most of them didn’t speak English.

At the local market in Tiraspol, I bought fresh fruit from vendors who greeted me with smiles and helped me figure out prices using gestures and laughter. They seemed genuinely happy to see a foreign visitor. There was no hard sell — just warm kindness. Although — fair warning — one guy did get a little annoyed when I took photos of his fruit stand without buying anything… oops. Lesson learned: always ask first, or at least buy an apple.

I loved meeting local people in Transnistria

Even at the supermarket, the vibe was surprisingly relaxed and friendly. The cashier patiently waited as I fumbled with unfamiliar coins and the other shoppers didn’t seem in a rush. It felt like a small, everyday glimpse into life in Transnistria — simple, slow-paced and genuine.

One of my favorite memories was walking into a small church where a group of older women were quietly cleaning and arranging flowers. They smiled shyly when they saw us, waved, and went right back to their work. There was something incredibly sweet and peaceful about that moment — a side of Transnistria that doesn’t show up in headlines or guidebooks.

These small interactions added up to something bigger. In a place that feels so unfamiliar on the surface, the everyday warmth of the people made it feel unexpectedly welcoming.

Visiting Transnistria felt like stepping into a parallel universe — one where time moves differently, History still lives on in everyday life and surprises wait around every corner. From Soviet statues and colorful cantinas to plastic coins and friendly locals, this tiny unrecognized country left a much bigger impression on me than I ever expected. It’s not the kind of place you visit for comfort or convenience… But if you’re curious, open-minded and looking for something truly off the beaten path, Transnistria will reward you with one of the most unusual and unforgettable travel experiences in the World.

1. Sofia – A City Where History Meets Modern Life

When I traveled to Bulgaria, I landed in Sofia late at night. After spending some hours at the airport waiting for the subway to open, I made my way to the city center.

I can’t even describe the feeling of seeing that empty city at 6 am. The sun was rising and the birds were starting to sing around the landmarks that instantly caught my attention. That’s the moment when I fell in love with Sofia. It’s one of my most special travel memories ever.

What I instantly noticed about Sofia was that there were barely any tourists. There weren’t many souvenir shops, many things were written only in Bulgarian and I could feel a vibe that I haven’t experienced in many other places.

It was amazing to experience Sofia as the locals do, seeing them go about their daily routines in peaceful neighborhoods and lively cafes. That’s when I really undestood how much of a hidden gem Bulgaria is!

The city has so much to offer, from historical landmarks like the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the fascinating remnants of Bulgaria’s Soviet past. It’s a place where culture, nature, History and modern life blend seamlessly.

I had no idea about it before I visited Bulgaria, but Sofia is actually one Europe’s oldest cities! Look closely and you’ll see centuries and centuries of History built on top of each other.

There are historic ruins everywhere in Sofia – even in subway stations

Besides the History that Sofia has to offer, I was surprised to see how much beautiful architecture the city has. There are so many beautiful buildings, cosy streets and majestic churches to admire.

The mix of architectural styles—from Ottoman to Soviet to modernist—creates a unique and captivating urban landscape. Whether you’re strolling through the city’s boulevards or exploring hidden corners, Sofia’s architectural gems never fail to impress.

Step inside the city’s majestic churches and you’ll be greeted with breathtaking interiors—stunning frescoes, intricate woodwork and ornate altars that showcase centuries of devotion. The peaceful atmosphere inside these sacred spaces is the perfect quiet escape from the bustling city outside.

Another thing I loved about Sofia was how safe I always felt. I felt free and comfortable to wander the streets, whether I was exploring the city center or more tucked-away spots. Sofia truly made me feel like I was part of the city’s pulse, not just a visitor passing through.

2. Rila Monastery: A Must-Visit Spiritual and Cultural Landmark

Visiting Rila Monastery was one of the most unforgettable moments of my trip to Bulgaria.

Tucked away in the heart of the Rila Mountains, the setting alone feels like something out of a fairytale. As I walked through the monastery’s grand arched entrance, I was immediately struck by the gorgeous frescoes and striped black-and-white architecture.

One of the most breathtaking aspects of Rila Monastery is its frescoes.

Covering nearly every surface of the outer and inner walls, these vibrant and detailed paintings are a masterpiece of Bulgarian Orthodox art. I could barely believe how vivid the colors are, even after centuries! And the scenes they depict—ranging from biblical stories to images of saints and moral lessons—are haunting and beautiful at the same time.

You could easily spend an hour just admiring the tiny details and expressions in each panel. The artistry is not only visually stunning but deeply symbolic, offering a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural soul of Bulgaria.

3. Plovdiv: Europe’s Hidden Gem and One of Its Oldest Cities

After visiting nearly 50 countries, Plovdiv is the biggest hidden gem I’ve ever found.

Before I started researching for my trip to Bulgaria, I had no idea this city even existed. When I discovered it and started reading about it, I was shocked about its ancient History and extremely well preserved Roman ruins. I obviosly knew I had to put this city on my Bulgaria itinerary.

The ancient Roman Theater is a real highlight, still standing as a testament to the city’s significance during the Roman Empire. But Plovdiv is full of historical treasures—Roman ruins are scattered throughout the whole city! Sometimes you’ll find them in the most unexpected places.

Near the bustling walking street, you can explore the remnants of the Roman Stadium, which once hosted gladiatorial contests. Quite close by, you’ll find the most unique H&M store I’ve ever seen. Walk inside and you’ll find ruins of the ancient roman walls in the middle of the store. I just couldn’t believe that city: even clothing stores have History to tell!

But it’s not just the ruins that make Plovdiv special. The city is a hub of creativity, with vibrant art galleries, charming cafes and the thriving Kapana district. That part of the city is full of independent shops and street art and it’s such a cool place to hang out.

Another interesting area of the city is the Old Town. This charming maze of narrow cobblestone streets is full of beautifully preserved historical houses. Each house tells its own story, showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage with its colorful facades and intricate woodwork. Be sure to visit this historical house that once belonged to an ultra-wealthy family, who showcased their status by building a fountain in the living room—designed to keep rose water flowing constantly.

Whether you’re a History lover or someone who just enjoys exploring charming neighborhoods, Plovdiv has something for everyone. For me, it was a perfect blend of cultural depth and modern energy. It became not only one of my favorite places in Bulgaria but also one of my all-time favorite cities.

4. Veliko Tarnovo: The City of the Tsars

Tucked into the forested hills of northern Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo is a city that feels like a journey back in time. Once the medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, this magical city remains one of the most historically significant and visually striking places in the country.

I’m not sure you would agree with me, but the view of the houses on the hills reminds me of Porto in Portugal. Except it’s still a hidden gem!

The crown jewel of Veliko Tarnovo is Tsarevets Fortress, perched dramatically above the Yantra River.

This medieval stronghold was once the heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire and remains a powerful symbol of the nation’s past. As you walk along its ancient stone pathways, it’s easy to imagine the grandeur of Bulgaria’s golden age.

You can picture royal palaces standing tall, old churches on the hill and thick stone walls built to protect the city. The panoramic views from the top add to the fortress’s magic, offering a sweeping look over the city and the river below.

One of my favorite parts of Veliko Tarnovo was wandering through Samovodska Charshia, the charming old market street just behind the main road.

It’s lined with little shops and workshops, each with its own character. One store really stuck with me—it was run by a local family, with the mom working there for 33 years and her son for 18. The walls were covered in photos of them over the years and the whole place felt more like stepping into someone’s living room than a shop.

It was such a warm, personal space and a perfect example of how the spirit of Veliko Tarnovo lives on in the people who call it home.

Whether you’re a History lover, a photographer or a traveler looking for something authentic and off-the-beaten-path, Veliko Tarnovo offers a unique taste of Bulgaria. It’s a place where past and present coexist in stunning harmony and you should definitely visit while it’s still such a hidden gem!

5. Varna: The Sea Capital with Stunning Sights

While Varna wasn’t my absolute favorite destination in Bulgaria, it’s definitely worth a visit—especially if you’re interested in exploring unique History and experiencing the lively atmosphere of the Black Sea coast.

I visited in mid-May, hoping for warm weather to relax on the beaches, but it was surprisingly chilly. So, if you’re planning a beach vacation, keep the season in mind. But no matter the weather, the Sea Garden is really nice to explore!

One of Varna’s standout attractions is the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral. This massive and beautiful Orthodox church is famous for its colorful frescoes and striking golden domes. Even though the city felt a bit busier and less charming compared to other Bulgarian towns I visited, the cathedral’s impressive architecture alone makes Varna worth a stop.

For me, the most unique thing to do in Varna was visiting the Varna Archaeological Museum. It’s home to the Varna Gold Treasure, which is considered the oldest gold ever discovered—over 6,000 years old.

Seeing these incredibly detailed pieces up close is honestly mind-blowing—especially knowing they were found in ancient burial sites. The fact that such intricate gold work came from prehistoric graves makes it even more fascinating. If you’re into History or just want to experience something truly one-of-a-kind, this museum is a must.

For many, Rila Monastery is a place of reflection and spiritual connection.

Even though it’s one of Bulgaria’s top tourist attractions, it also retains its role as an active monastery. Monks continue to live and pray within its walls, even though they are not many – there are only 6 monks left.

Whether you’re religious or simply seeking a deeper cultural experience, the monastery’s atmosphere of serenity offers something truly special and unforgettable.

How to Get to Rila Monastery from Sofia

Getting to Rila Monastery from Sofia can be a bit tricky if you’re relying on public transportation, which is why many travelers choose to visit on a guided tour instead. Another convenient option is renting a car for your trip to Bulgaria.

Located about 120 kilometers south of the capital, the journey to Rila Monastery takes around 2 to 2.5 hours each way, depending on traffic and road conditions. In this section, I’ll break down the best ways to reach Rila Monastery — including why I chose a guided tour and why it turned out to be the most convenient option.

🚍 1. Public Transportation (Bus)

There is no direct bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery, which can make the journey by public transport a bit complicated. The most common option is to take a bus from Sofia to the town of Rila and then arrange a taxi for the final 20 kilometers to the monastery.

Buses to Rila leave from Ovcha Kupel bus station, but they’re infrequent and not always well-timed for a same-day round trip.

I love using public transportation when I travel, but I quickly gave up on trying to reach Rila Monastery by bus once I realized how complicated it was. Admittedly, the fact that day tours to Rila Monastery are so affordable also influenced my decision!

Pros: This is the cheapest way to get to Rila Monastery from Sofia
Cons: This option is very inconvenient; it requires lots of coordination and extra planning. Infrequent bus departures might make it very difficult to go to the Monastery and come back to Sofia on the same day

🚗 2. Renting a Car

If you’re comfortable driving abroad, renting a car gives you the most flexibility on your trip to Bulgaria.

The drive from Sofia to Rila Monastery takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and is very scenic, especially once you get into the mountains.

Pros: You would have a lot more flexibility regarding when to visit the Monastery; a car also allows you to make detours to nearby places
Cons: Rila Monastery is located in a mountainous area, which might make some people nervous about driving

🚌 3. Taking a Guided Day Tour (Recommended)

In my opinion, taking a guided tour is the best way to visit Rila Monastery from Sofia.

I don’t usually go for organized tours when I travel — I like to keep costs low and tours aren’t always the most budget-friendly option. But choosing a tour to Rila Monastery instead of trying to navigate public transportation was an easy decision.

Day tours from Sofia to Rila Monastery are surprisingly affordable — so much so that I initially wondered if I was missing something! In the end, this tour I took was super convenient and it provided an amazing value for the price I paid.

I’m not gonna lie, one of my favorite things about this tour is the price! I paid only €20 for an 8-hour tour, which I think is an amazing deal.

It’s worth mentioning that the price can vary — some days it’s €20, but most days the tour costs €25. Even at the higher price, I still think it’s a great value for everything the tour includes!

After departure from Sofia, the tour begins with a stop at Boyana Church: an optional visit for those interested in exploring more of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. You have the choice to pay 12 BGN to enter the church, if you want to see the historical frescoes inside – but note that no pictures are allowed inside the church ❌

I decided not to enter, so I chose the option to enjoy the beautiful outdoor surroundings for about 20 minutes without any cost.

From there, it takes about 2 hours to drive to the monastery.

Once at Rila Monastery, entrance to the main areas is free. The guide provided an interesting 40-minute explanation about the monastery’s History and relevance. After that, we had time to explore the iconic church and its stunning grounds for free.

If you’re interested in delving deeper into the monastery’s History, you can opt to visit the monastery’s museum for an additional 4 BGN.

There’s also an optional visit to Saint John of Rila’s cave, where he lived for many years before founding the monastery. For 15 BGN, you can explore this peaceful and historic site.

I decided not to visit the cave though, which just meant I got extra time to explore the monastery. I had 3 hours of free time in total, which was the perfect amount of time to take loads of pictures, explore the surroundings and even eat some food that I took with me from Sofia.

📌 Good to know before you go

Dress appropriately: To enter Rila Monastery, you’ll need to cover your knees and shoulders. Bring a scarf or light shawl if you’re visiting in warmer months.
Bring layers: Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mountains — especially in the morning. A light jacket or sweater is a good idea.
Bring cash: Some extras (like the museum or cave entrance fees, or even the food available to buy at the monastery) must be paid in cash. There’s an ATM near the tour departure point in Sofia if you need to withdraw money beforehand.
A quick note for photographers: you’re not allowed to take pictures inside the church at Rila Monastery. This rule is strictly enforced out of respect for the religious significance of the space. However, you’re more than welcome to take photos around the monastery’s beautiful exterior, including the stunning striped façade, arched walkways, and mountain backdrop — and trust me, there’s plenty to capture outside!
Pack snacks or lunch: Food options near the monastery are very limited — mostly just a small bakery and one restaurant. If you’re picky or want to avoid crowds, bring something to eat from Sofia.

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is the last divided capital city in the World. Split between the Greek-Cypriot south and the Turkish-controlled north, this city offers a unique experience that you can’t find anywhere else on Earth.

For travelers, this remarkable divide offers the rare chance to experience two cultures, two histories and two very different atmospheres within a single city.

Crossing the border in Nicosia is straightforward and unforgettable, offering the unique opportunity to explore Northern Nicosia. That area is vibrant and very rich in History and culture. From Ottoman-era landmarks and lively markets to quiet courtyards and traditional Turkish-Cypriot cafés, this side of the city will make you feel like you’ve arrived in Turkey.

Why is Nicosia Divided?

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, holds the unique title of being the last divided capital city in the World. This division dates back to 1974, following a coup backed by Greece, which prompted Turkey’s invasion of the northern part of the island. As a result, Nicosia was split into two distinct regions.

The southern part of the city is controlled by the Greek Cypriots and the northern part is governed by the Turkish Cypriots. Between those two areas, there is the “Green Line”: a demilitarized zone maintained by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

How to Cross the Border in Nicosia: A Practical Guide

Crossing the Green Line in Nicosia is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Cyprus. This demilitarized zone divides the capital into two distinct regions: the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north.

Whether you’re visiting Nicosia for its History, culture or to explore both sides of the city, crossing the Green Line is a must.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the process simple and straightforward.

Nicosia Border Crossing Points: Where Can You Cross the Green Line?

In order to cross the Green Line, you need to go to a checkpoint. There are several checkpoints where you can cross from the Greek to the Turkish side (or vice versa) in Nicosia. Some of the main border crossings are:

Ledra Street Checkpoint: Located in the heart of Nicosia, this is the most popular pedestrian crossing point for tourists.
Ledra Palace Checkpoint: This checkpoint is convenient for travelers near the Ledra Palace Hotel and it’s also accessible for vehicles.
Metehan (Agios Dometios) Checkpoint: This checkpoint is primarily used for vehicles and connects the northern and southern parts of Cyprus.

Documents Required to Cross the Green Line in Nicosia

Crossing the Green Line is fairly simple, but you’ll need to have a few things on hand to ensure a smooth process:

Passport or ID: You must present either your passport or national ID card to cross the border. EU citizens can use their national ID cards, while non-EU citizens must show their passport.
Visa (if applicable): Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter the Turkish side. Many visitors can get a visa on arrival at the checkpoint, but it’s always best to verify this before you travel. As a portuguese citizen, I didn’t need a visa to enter.
No customs declarations required: There are generally no customs declarations for tourists. But be aware of restricted goods like large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, particularly when crossing into the Turkish Cypriot area.

What to Expect at the Checkpoints

Crossing the border between the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus is usually quick and easy. The whole process took me just a few minutes and there were no questions asked. Here’s what to expect:

Security Checks: Expect a quick passport check. Border guards could ask a few basic questions and inspect your passport, but in my experience they just scanned it and let me in.
Customs Inspection: You won’t need to declare goods unless you are carrying large quantities of certain items (for example alcohol or tobacco).
Stamp or Paper Slip: Depending on the checkpoint, some travelers receive a passport stamp or a small slip of paper with their entry details when crossing the Green Line in Nicosia. Personally, I was hoping for a stamp—I love looking at my passport and reminiscing about past trips—but no luck. The border guard just scanned it electronically and that was it. No cute stamp to mark the moment!
Time to Cross: Crossing is typically quick, usually taking 5-10 minutes, but it may take longer during peak hours (for example on weekends or holidays).

Exploring North Nicosia: What to See and Do on the Turkish Side

When you arrive at the Turkish side of Nicosia, it will feel like coming to a different country. That’s the unique thing about Nicosia: the UN buffer zone separates two very distinct areas of the capital city.

Suddenly you will see that the prices are in turkish lira, there are turkish dishes on the menus and everything is written in turkish.

The architecture is also very different on that side of the city. The mosques, the local markets and the traditional turkish coffeeshops make for a very interesting day of exploring the World’s last divided city!

📍 Visit the Büyük Han

Büyük Han is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Nicosia and a must-visit for anyone crossing into the Turkish Cypriot side of the city.

Built in 1572 during Ottoman rule, this beautifully restored caravanserai used to be an inn. In the past, it was used by merchants traveling along ancient trade routes. Today, it’s a vibrant cultural hub filled with local artisan shops, traditional handicrafts, art galleries and cozy cafés where you can take a break and enjoy the historical atmosphere.

Kumarcılar Han, also known as the Gamblers’ Inn, is such a hidden gem in North Nicosia.

Just a short walk from the more famous Büyük Han, this smaller Ottoman-era inn dates back to the 17th century. It has been beautifully restored and now serves as a charming spot for visitors to explore.

Inside, you’ll find a selection of local craft shops, artisan stalls and quaint cafés offering Turkish coffee and traditional sweets. Even though it’s quieter than Büyük Han, Kumarcılar Han offers an equally authentic experience and a more intimate look at Cypriot History and culture.

The Venetian Column is a historical monument located in Atatürk Square, right in the heart of North Nicosia.

Originally erected by the Venetians in the 16th century, this stone column once stood in Salamis before being relocated to Nicosia as a symbol of Venetian power. Topped with a globe, the column is made of granite and features the coats of arms of prominent Venetian families.

Today, it stands as a silent witness to the city’s layered past—from Venetian rule to Ottoman and British influence. A quick stop here offers a great photo opportunity and a moment to reflect on the diverse History that shapes Nicosia’s old town.

This gate is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Nicosia, offering visitors a glimpse into Nicosia’s rich Venetian and Ottoman past.

Built in 1567 by the Venetians as part of the city’s fortifications, the Kyrenia gate once served as the main northern entrance to the walled city. During Ottoman rule, it was restored and topped with a small domed watch post that still stands today.

Today, the Kyrenia Gate houses a visitor information center and it’s an important landmark for tourists exploring the Turkish side of Nicosia. With its well-preserved stonework and strategic location near the Venetian walls, it’s a great photo spot and a must-see for travelers interested in Cyprus’s military architecture and colonial history.

🏡 Walk around the Arabahmet Quarter

Tucked away behind the Venetian walls, the Arabahmet Quarter is one of the most charming and historic neighborhoods in North Nicosia.

As I wandered through its quiet streets, I found myself surrounded by beautiful whitewashed Ottoman-era houses, many with wooden shutters and the distinctive bay windows known as cumbas.

There’s something peaceful about this part of the city—it feels untouched by time.

I loved seeing locals sitting outside and kids playing around. It’s the perfect place to get a glimpe of the daily life of local people living in the Turkish side of Nicosia.

Some of the homes still bear Armenian crosses carved above the doors, a subtle reminder of the district’s multicultural past. If you’re looking for a more authentic side of North Nicosia, far from the tourist crowds, Arabahmet Quarter is where the city truly breathes.

The Selimiye Mosque in North Nicosia is a must-see landmark, even if it’s temporarily closed for renovations.

Originally built as the Hagia Sophia Cathedral in 1326, it was converted into a mosque in 1571 after the Ottoman conquest. This Gothic-style building is the largest mosque in Cyprus, with a capacity of up to 2,500 people.

The unique architecture of this mosque blends Christian and Islamic elements, featuring Roman columns and intricate stone carvings. It’s located in the heart of the old city, surrounded by lively streets and local cafés.

While the interior is currently closed for restoration, visitors can still admire the impressive exterior and the surrounding area. It’s a perfect spot for photography and to appreciate the blend of architectural styles that tell the story of Nicosia’s diverse past.

The Bandabuliya Municipal Market, also known as Ağoɾa Ayıou Antonıou, is a historic covered market located in the heart of North Nicosia.

Established between 1930 and 1932 during the British colonial era, the market has served as a central hub for local trade and commerce ever since. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to preserve its architectural heritage and adapt to modern needs.

Today, Bandabuliya remains a vibrant space where visitors can experience the rich cultural tapestry of the region. The market houses a variety of stalls offering fresh produce, meats, spices and traditional Cypriot products.

If you don’t have much time to spend there, you can find great day tours from Paphos to Nicosia. I would say that one day in Nicosia is more than enough to experience the divided city and get a taste of Northern Cyprus.

Since the city is divided, where you stay will shape your experience—so here’s a quick guide to help you choose the best base for exploring both sides of the capital.

Best Areas to Stay in Nicosia

1. South Nicosia (Greek Cypriot Side)

The southern part of the city, officially part of the Republic of Cyprus, is more developed for tourism. You’ll find a wide range of hotels, from boutique guesthouses in the old town to modern business hotels.

Lefkosia Old Town: Ideal for travelers who want to stay within the historic Venetian walls. It’s close to top attractions like Ledra Street, the Leventis Museum and great local tavernas.
City Center/Commercial District: Great for convenience, especially if you’re combining business with leisure. You’ll find more upscale hotels here, like The Classic Hotel or MAP Boutique Hotel.
Agioi Omologites or Engomi: Quieter residential areas with budget-friendly options and easy access to both the city center and embassies. I stayed at NEX Hostel because it was one of the cheapest options and they have great reviews. It wasn’t the best hostel ever but they have a cool terrace and the beds are comfortable.

2. North Nicosia (Turkish Cypriot Side)

The northern part is less commercialized but offers a more local and authentic vibe. Accommodation options are more limited but charming and prices are generally lower.

Near Büyük Han & Selimiye Mosque: Staying in this area puts you close to the main attractions of North Nicosia, with small guesthouses and boutique hotels offering traditional Cypriot hospitality.
Lefkoşa City Center: A good mix of local life and accessibility, with a few modern stays and restaurants within walking distance.
