Even though it’s one of Bulgaria’s top tourist attractions, it also retains its role as an active monastery. Monks continue to live and pray within its walls, even though they are not many – there are only 6 monks left.

How to Get to Rila Monastery from Sofia

Getting to Rila Monastery from Sofia can be a bit tricky if you’re relying on public transportation, which is why many travelers choose to visit on a guided tour instead. Another convenient option is renting a car for your trip to Bulgaria.

Located about 120 kilometers south of the capital, the journey to Rila Monastery takes around 2 to 2.5 hours each way, depending on traffic and road conditions. In this section, I’ll break down the best ways to reach Rila Monastery — including why I chose a guided tour and why it turned out to be the most convenient option.

🚍 1. Public Transportation (Bus)

There is no direct bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery, which can make the journey by public transport a bit complicated. The most common option is to take a bus from Sofia to the town of Rila and then arrange a taxi for the final 20 kilometers to the monastery.

Buses to Rila leave from Ovcha Kupel bus station, but they’re infrequent and not always well-timed for a same-day round trip.

I love using public transportation when I travel, but I quickly gave up on trying to reach Rila Monastery by bus once I realized how complicated it was. Admittedly, the fact that day tours to Rila Monastery are so affordable also influenced my decision!

Cons: This option is very inconvenient; it requires lots of coordination and extra planning. Infrequent bus departures might make it very difficult to go to the Monastery and come back to Sofia on the same day

🚗 2. Renting a Car

If you’re comfortable driving abroad, renting a car gives you the most flexibility on your trip to Bulgaria.

The drive from Sofia to Rila Monastery takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and is very scenic, especially once you get into the mountains.

Pros: You would have a lot more flexibility regarding when to visit the Monastery; a car also allows you to make detours to nearby places
Cons: Rila Monastery is located in a mountainous area, which might make some people nervous about driving

In my opinion, taking a guided tour is the best way to visit Rila Monastery from Sofia.

I don’t usually go for organized tours when I travel — I like to keep costs low and tours aren’t always the most budget-friendly option. But choosing a tour to Rila Monastery instead of trying to navigate public transportation was an easy decision.

I’m not gonna lie, one of my favorite things about this tour is the price! I paid only €20 for an 8-hour tour, which I think is an amazing deal.

It’s worth mentioning that the price can vary — some days it’s €20, but most days the tour costs €25. Even at the higher price, I still think it’s a great value for everything the tour includes!

After departure from Sofia, the tour begins with a stop at Boyana Church: an optional visit for those interested in exploring more of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. You have the choice to pay 12 BGN to enter the church, if you want to see the historical frescoes inside – but note that no pictures are allowed inside the church ❌

I decided not to enter, so I chose the option to enjoy the beautiful outdoor surroundings for about 20 minutes without any cost.

From there, it takes about 2 hours to drive to the monastery.

Once at Rila Monastery, entrance to the main areas is free. The guide provided an interesting 40-minute explanation about the monastery’s History and relevance. After that, we had time to explore the iconic church and its stunning grounds for free.

If you’re interested in delving deeper into the monastery’s History, you can opt to visit the monastery’s museum for an additional 4 BGN.

There’s also an optional visit to Saint John of Rila’s cave, where he lived for many years before founding the monastery. For 15 BGN, you can explore this peaceful and historic site.

I decided not to visit the cave though, which just meant I got extra time to explore the monastery. I had 3 hours of free time in total, which was the perfect amount of time to take loads of pictures, explore the surroundings and even eat some food that I took with me from Sofia.

📌 Good to know before you go

Dress appropriately: To enter Rila Monastery, you’ll need to cover your knees and shoulders. Bring a scarf or light shawl if you’re visiting in warmer months.
Bring layers: Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mountains — especially in the morning. A light jacket or sweater is a good idea.
Bring cash: Some extras (like the museum or cave entrance fees, or even the food available to buy at the monastery) must be paid in cash. There’s an ATM near the tour departure point in Sofia if you need to withdraw money beforehand.
A quick note for photographers: you’re not allowed to take pictures inside the church at Rila Monastery. This rule is strictly enforced out of respect for the religious significance of the space. However, you’re more than welcome to take photos around the monastery’s beautiful exterior, including the stunning striped façade, arched walkways, and mountain backdrop — and trust me, there’s plenty to capture outside!
Pack snacks or lunch: Food options near the monastery are very limited — mostly just a small bakery and one restaurant. If you’re picky or want to avoid crowds, bring something to eat from Sofia.

For travelers, this remarkable divide offers the rare chance to experience two cultures, two histories and two very different atmospheres within a single city.

Crossing the border in Nicosia is straightforward and unforgettable, offering the unique opportunity to explore Northern Nicosia. That area is vibrant and very rich in History and culture. From Ottoman-era landmarks and lively markets to quiet courtyards and traditional Turkish-Cypriot cafés, this side of the city will make you feel like you’ve arrived in Turkey.

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, holds the unique title of being the last divided capital city in the World. This division dates back to 1974, following a coup backed by Greece, which prompted Turkey’s invasion of the northern part of the island. As a result, Nicosia was split into two distinct regions.

Crossing the Green Line in Nicosia is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Cyprus. This demilitarized zone divides the capital into two distinct regions: the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north.

Whether you’re visiting Nicosia for its History, culture or to explore both sides of the city, crossing the Green Line is a must.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the process simple and straightforward.

Nicosia Border Crossing Points: Where Can You Cross the Green Line?

In order to cross the Green Line, you need to go to a checkpoint. There are several checkpoints where you can cross from the Greek to the Turkish side (or vice versa) in Nicosia. Some of the main border crossings are:

Ledra Street Checkpoint: Located in the heart of Nicosia, this is the most popular pedestrian crossing point for tourists.
Ledra Palace Checkpoint: This checkpoint is convenient for travelers near the Ledra Palace Hotel and it’s also accessible for vehicles.
Metehan (Agios Dometios) Checkpoint: This checkpoint is primarily used for vehicles and connects the northern and southern parts of Cyprus.

Documents Required to Cross the Green Line in Nicosia

Crossing the Green Line is fairly simple, but you’ll need to have a few things on hand to ensure a smooth process:

Passport or ID: You must present either your passport or national ID card to cross the border. EU citizens can use their national ID cards, while non-EU citizens must show their passport.
Visa (if applicable): Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter the Turkish side. Many visitors can get a visa on arrival at the checkpoint, but it’s always best to verify this before you travel. As a portuguese citizen, I didn’t need a visa to enter.
No customs declarations required: There are generally no customs declarations for tourists. But be aware of restricted goods like large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, particularly when crossing into the Turkish Cypriot area.

What to Expect at the Checkpoints

Crossing the border between the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus is usually quick and easy. The whole process took me just a few minutes and there were no questions asked. Here’s what to expect:

Security Checks: Expect a quick passport check. Border guards could ask a few basic questions and inspect your passport, but in my experience they just scanned it and let me in.
Customs Inspection: You won’t need to declare goods unless you are carrying large quantities of certain items (for example alcohol or tobacco).
Stamp or Paper Slip: Depending on the checkpoint, some travelers receive a passport stamp or a small slip of paper with their entry details when crossing the Green Line in Nicosia. Personally, I was hoping for a stamp—I love looking at my passport and reminiscing about past trips—but no luck. The border guard just scanned it electronically and that was it. No cute stamp to mark the moment!
Time to Cross: Crossing is typically quick, usually taking 5-10 minutes, but it may take longer during peak hours (for example on weekends or holidays).

Exploring North Nicosia: What to See and Do on the Turkish Side

When you arrive at the Turkish side of Nicosia, it will feel like coming to a different country. That’s the unique thing about Nicosia: the UN buffer zone separates two very distinct areas of the capital city.

Suddenly you will see that the prices are in turkish lira, there are turkish dishes on the menus and everything is written in turkish.

The architecture is also very different on that side of the city. The mosques, the local markets and the traditional turkish coffeeshops make for a very interesting day of exploring the World’s last divided city!

📍 Visit the Büyük Han

Büyük Han is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Nicosia and a must-visit for anyone crossing into the Turkish Cypriot side of the city.

Built in 1572 during Ottoman rule, this beautifully restored caravanserai used to be an inn. In the past, it was used by merchants traveling along ancient trade routes. Today, it’s a vibrant cultural hub filled with local artisan shops, traditional handicrafts, art galleries and cozy cafés where you can take a break and enjoy the historical atmosphere.

The Venetian Column is a historical monument located in Atatürk Square, right in the heart of North Nicosia.

Originally erected by the Venetians in the 16th century, this stone column once stood in Salamis before being relocated to Nicosia as a symbol of Venetian power. Topped with a globe, the column is made of granite and features the coats of arms of prominent Venetian families.

Today, it stands as a silent witness to the city’s layered past—from Venetian rule to Ottoman and British influence. A quick stop here offers a great photo opportunity and a moment to reflect on the diverse History that shapes Nicosia’s old town.

This gate is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Nicosia, offering visitors a glimpse into Nicosia’s rich Venetian and Ottoman past.

Built in 1567 by the Venetians as part of the city’s fortifications, the Kyrenia gate once served as the main northern entrance to the walled city. During Ottoman rule, it was restored and topped with a small domed watch post that still stands today.

Today, the Kyrenia Gate houses a visitor information center and it’s an important landmark for tourists exploring the Turkish side of Nicosia. With its well-preserved stonework and strategic location near the Venetian walls, it’s a great photo spot and a must-see for travelers interested in Cyprus’s military architecture and colonial history.

🏡 Walk around the Arabahmet Quarter

Tucked away behind the Venetian walls, the Arabahmet Quarter is one of the most charming and historic neighborhoods in North Nicosia.

As I wandered through its quiet streets, I found myself surrounded by beautiful whitewashed Ottoman-era houses, many with wooden shutters and the distinctive bay windows known as cumbas.

There’s something peaceful about this part of the city—it feels untouched by time.

I loved seeing locals sitting outside and kids playing around. It’s the perfect place to get a glimpe of the daily life of local people living in the Turkish side of Nicosia.

Some of the homes still bear Armenian crosses carved above the doors, a subtle reminder of the district’s multicultural past. If you’re looking for a more authentic side of North Nicosia, far from the tourist crowds, Arabahmet Quarter is where the city truly breathes.

The Selimiye Mosque in North Nicosia is a must-see landmark, even if it’s temporarily closed for renovations.

Established between 1930 and 1932 during the British colonial era, the market has served as a central hub for local trade and commerce ever since. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to preserve its architectural heritage and adapt to modern needs.

Today, Bandabuliya remains a vibrant space where visitors can experience the rich cultural tapestry of the region. The market houses a variety of stalls offering fresh produce, meats, spices and traditional Cypriot products.

It’s quieter and less commercial than the south, but that’s exactly what makes it special. If you’re crossing the Green Line, take your time—North Nicosia rewards slow travel and curious minds.

If you don’t have much time to spend there, you can find great day tours from Paphos to Nicosia. I would say that one day in Nicosia is more than enough to experience the divided city and get a taste of Northern Cyprus.

But if you’re planning a longer stay, Nicosia offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different budgets, travel styles and interests. Since the city is divided, where you stay will shape your experience—so here’s a quick guide to help you choose the best base for exploring both sides of the capital.

Best Areas to Stay in Nicosia

1. South Nicosia (Greek Cypriot Side)

The southern part of the city, officially part of the Republic of Cyprus, is more developed for tourism. You’ll find a wide range of hotels, from boutique guesthouses in the old town to modern business hotels.

Lefkosia Old Town: Ideal for travelers who want to stay within the historic Venetian walls. It’s close to top attractions like Ledra Street, the Leventis Museum and great local tavernas.
City Center/Commercial District: Great for convenience, especially if you’re combining business with leisure. You’ll find more upscale hotels here, like The Classic Hotel or MAP Boutique Hotel.
Agioi Omologites or Engomi: Quieter residential areas with budget-friendly options and easy access to both the city center and embassies. I stayed at NEX Hostel because it was one of the cheapest options and they have great reviews. It wasn’t the best hostel ever but they have a cool terrace and the beds are comfortable.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos offers more than just a glimpse into antiquity. It’s a vivid and colorful journey through Roman History that you don’t wanna miss.

As you walk among the remarkably preserved floors of Roman villas, scenes of gods, heroes and legendary battles can be witnessed. The incredible mosaics of Paphos perfectly caputure the power of a civilization long gone but far from forgotten.

The ancient city of Paphos, Cyprus is steeped in history, dating back to the Neolithic era.

Its golden period began during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, when Paphos became the capital of the island. It was also a thriving center of culture, politics and religion.

Located just steps away from Papho’s bustling harbor, the Archaeological Park of Kato is a vast open-air museum that will take you back in time.

Spanning several centuries of ancient history, this remarkable park includes ruins from the Roman, Hellenistic and even Byzantine periods. The star attractions, however, are the Roman villas with their incredibly preserved mosaic floors.

These roman villas are actually some of the finest examples in the whole Mediterranean. Among the most renowned are the House of Dionysos, House of Theseus, House of Aion and House of Orpheus. Each of them is named after the mythological scenes depicted in their mosaics.

The park also features a Roman theater, ancient tombs, an agora and remnants of early Christian basilicas.

The luxurious Roman villas within the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos weren’t just homes—they were the residences of some of the most powerful figures in ancient Cyprus.

This helps explain why the House of Theseus is so big and opulent. It includes mosaic floors that depict scenes from Greek mythology, such as Theseus fighting the Minotaur.

Planning Your Visit to this UNESCO Site

Visiting the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos is a must for anyone traveling to Cyprus. Here are some practical tips to help you plan your visit.

Best time to visit

Cyprus is known for having good weather all-year-round, so I’m sure you will enjoy your visit to this Historical site no matter when you visit.

That being said, I visit in the beginning of May and the weather was basically perfect. I was glad to be able to explore the site with a mild temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius, instead of having to stand the heat of the summer.

Since Cyprus is located in the Mediterranean and European summers have a tendency to get quite hot these days, I would say that the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit this unique place in Paphos.

Visiting in spring (April to early June) or autumn (September to October) will probably allow you to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine, without dealing with heatwaves.

Working hours

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is open year-round and it has longer working hours in the summer months (usually 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM). During the winter months, it’s open from 8:30 to 5 pm.

If you’re visiting between June and September, it would be smart to plan your visit for the early morning or the late afternoon. These hours offer a chance to visit in more comfortable temperatures compared to the intense heat typically experienced during the peak of summer days in Cyprus.

If you’re a woman considering traveling solo to the Middle East, you’ve probably wondered: Is Jordan safe for female travelers in 2025? It’s a fair question—and an important one.

Jordan is a beautiful and diverse country that is on my travelers’ bucket lists. It has breathtaking landscapes, a rich history and even one of the World’s Wonders. But as with any destination, especially for women traveling alone, it’s essential to know what to expect.

In this guide, I’ll break down everything that solo female travelers need to know about visiting Jordan in 2025. From safety tips and cultural etiquette, to on-the-ground experiences and practical advice.

I’ll share what went well during my trip, what I wish I had known beforehand, and the nuanced reality of traveling solo as a woman in a conservative, male-dominated culture.

Is 2025 a Good Time to Visit Jordan?

Even though Jordan is a very popular touristic destination, you might have heard that it’s currently facing a tourism crisis. Ever since the war started next door in Palestine, many tourists have become too scared to go there.

Even though I understand people’s concerns to travel so close to conflict, I do think that 2025 is an amazing time to visit Jordan.

The war is next door, yes. Unfortunately, Jordan is no stranger to bordering conflict. Having Syria and Irak as neighboors, Jordan is a country that is used to being close to war. But that doesn’t mean you will be in danger by traveling there.

In fact, Jordan is considered one of the safest countries to visit in the Middle East. So, if the lost city of Petra and the Dead Sea are on your bucket list, this might be the perfect time to visit.

I heard from locals that Petra used to get around 10.000 visitors per day. When the war in Palestine started, it dropped to as low as a few hundreds. Now there’s apparently about 2000 people visiting daily.

Even though it’s really sad to see the way it’s affecting the locals, this is really good news for people visiting Jordan right now.

It’s unheard of to visit Petra without crowds. Now, that’s exactly what is happening! It’s a golden chance that you really shouldn’t miss.

Is Jordan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

For many women, Jordan is considered one of the safest destinations in the Middle East for solo travel. Many female travelers have explored Jordan’s ancient ruins, deserts, and cities without serious issues—and I was one of them. I visited Jordan solo in April 2025 and, overall, I was safe throughout my trip.

But while I didn’t face any direct threats, I did encounter a number of challenges that made parts of the experience uncomfortable and, at times, emotionally exhausting. That’s why I think it’s important to go beyond the edited Instagram highlights and share a more honest, practical look of what solo female travelers might experience in Jordan in 2025.

Real Talk: The Struggles of Solo Female Travel in Jordan (2025)

In my experience, traveling solo in Jordan was a struggle. Even though I absolutely loved floating in the Dead Sea and I will never forget the moment when I first saw the Treasury in Petra, the difficult parts of this trip will stay with me for a long time.

One of the things I struggled the most when traveling solo in Jordan was the fact that you attract so much attention by being on your own as a woman.

I tried to be open-minded and ignore it at first. Deep down, I wanted to believe that men in Jordan could really just be friendly and trying to be helpful when striking up a conversation. But it didn’t take me long to understand that it wasn’t the case and the conversations would turn creepy if I didn’t keep distance.

In my experience traveling solo in Jordan, almost every time I responded politely to a local man who tried to start a conversation, the question ‘Do you have a boyfriend?‘ came up within minutes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t uncommon for solo female travelers. There are insufferable men everywhere, not only in Jordan.

But, after the 27 countries that I’ve visited solo, Jordan was the place where men were the most disrespectul towards me.

During my solo trip to Jordan in 2025, I encountered several uncomfortable situations that made me rethink how I engaged with strangers—particularly men.

In one especially unsettling moment, a man approached me inside a mosque and wouldn’t stop asking personal questions: if I had a boyfriend, if I loved him, where I lived, and whether I was traveling alone. I kept lying and telling him that my boyfriend would be joining me later, hoping it would end the conversation—but he wouldn’t stop. He kept pressing and eventually insisted on getting my Facebook or phone number. I refused, of course, but I had to carefully manage the situation to avoid the risk of him following me.

At the Dead Sea, two local men insisted on showing me the spa area, and when I declined, they bluntly asked if I would sleep with them at their hotel.

On two separate occasions, men asked me how much I weigh—guessing around 65 kilograms—and said they could carry me, which felt both invasive and deeply disturbing. I simply didn’t know what to think, how to act or even what to reply when faced with such a comment.

Even in the peaceful setting of Wadi Rum, I was offered a “private stargazing tour” by a man whose intentions didn’t feel innocent. Especially after spending days avoiding another man who persistently offered to drive me all the way from Petra to Wadi Rum.

These experiences were a stark reminder that, while Jordan is generally safe in terms of physical danger, solo female travelers may still face persistent and often sexualized attention that can quickly become overwhelming.

How to Dress in Jordan: Clothing Tips for Female Travelers

When I first arrived in Jordan, I started exploring Amman wearing a t-shirt and biker shorts that ended just above the knee. I had read that Jordan was more liberal than some of its neighboring countries, but I quickly realized that it’s still a very conservative place—especially when it comes to how women dress in public.

Surprisingly, Amman was actually the place where I felt the most pressure to cover up. It was the only city where I felt it was necessary to keep both my knees and shoulders covered, particularly when walking through more local or less touristy neighborhoods. I eventually got into the habit of wearing long clothing and always carried a lightweight overshirt in case I felt I was drawing too much attention.

But it’s important to understand that dressing according to local expectations doesn’t guarantee you’ll avoid uncomfortable experiences. One of the most unsettling moments of my trip happened inside a mosque, where I was fully covered in the clothing provided to me at the entrance.

Despite being appropriately dressed, a man still approached me and began asking invasive personal questions. It was a clear reminder that even when you’re respecting the culture and covering up, harassment can still happen. It’s not always about what you wear.

Staying safe as a solo female traveler in Jordan requires more than just adequate clothing

Compared to Amman, I found that Petra and Wadi Rum were much more relaxed when it comes to clothing for women.

In the town of Wadi Musa, which serves as the gateway to Petra, I still carried a loose shirt with me to throw on over my outfit when walking through local streets—just to be respectful and avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

But once inside Petra itself, it felt completely different. The site is so popular with international tourists that locals working there seemed very accustomed to a wide range of clothing choices. I felt comfortable wearing short sleeves and even having my knees exposed.

The same applied to Wadi Rum, where the desert setting and the tourism-driven environment made it feel acceptable to dress more freely.

What I Wish I Knew Before My Solo Trip to Jordan

As a solo female traveler in Jordan, I often felt exposed and like a target, regardless of how I dressed or behaved.

The fact that I was traveling alone seemed to attract unwanted attention, especially from men. They seemed to see my solo status as an opportunity to approach me and ask inappropriate questions.

While I tried to stay calm and confident, it was clear that being an unaccompanied woman made me stand out in ways that I hadn’t anticipated. In hindsight, I really wish I had joined more tours during my trip.

Having fellow travelers with me on the tours, instead of being alone, would have helped me feel both safer and more relaxed while exploring Jordan.

The reality is that public transportation in Jordan isn’t great, which made traveling solo a bit tiring and sometimes even intimidating. On my own, I found it difficult to navigate. The lack of reliable, accessible transport options just added unnecessary stress to my trip.

Looking back, I know my trip would have been far more enjoyable if I had joined more tours—like the one I took to the Dead Sea—since they would have provided a more comfortable and secure way to explore, while also reducing the feeling of isolation.

Looking back, I also wish I hadn’t felt the need to be so nice and friendly to every local I interacted with.

While I was just trying to be polite and respectful, I quickly realized that friendliness from a solo female traveler is often misinterpreted. In several situations, what I saw as basic kindness was taken as an invitation for something more, leading to uncomfortable or persistent advances. I’ve learned that in certain contexts, especially as a woman traveling alone in a conservative country, being more reserved isn’t rude—it’s necessary.

Where to Stay in Jordan: Safety Tips for Female Travelers

Staying in good and safe accommodations is a must for solo female travelers. Finding the best hostels should be a main concern for women planning to travel solo to Jordan.

While exploring Jordan, my hostels were my safe places. I spent lots of time researching which accommodations to choose and I had amazing experiences in all of them, except one.

I’ll leave a list below, in case fellow solo female travelers need tips on where to stay in Jordan.

Where to stay in Amman:

Battuta Hostel – this is the hostel where I stayed when I first got to Amman and it’s a really nice place. The staff is friendly and the hostel itself is stylish and cosy, even though it isn’t the most modern. There is only downside to this hostel: it’s not super central.
Nomads Hotel – I made friends with a fellow traveler in Amman and he was staying at this hostel. I went there to meet up with him and was really impressed by it! The common areas are very cool and there is a rooftop with an amazing view.
The Cabin – This is by far my favorite hostel in Amman! It’s the one I chose for my last few nights in Amman, before flying away, and I’m really glad I stayed there. The staff is really nice and friendly and this hostel’s location just can’t be beaten! It’s extremely central, so you’ll be able to walk everywhere. The beds are super comfortable and the whole hostel is very clean. I was actually sad to leave!

Where to stay in Wadi Musa (Petra):

Rafiki Hostel: I picked this hostel for my stay in Wadi Musa and it was the perfect choice! Honestly, this hostel’s staff is probably the most friendly I’ve ever seen. Especially the owner, who invited me for lunch as soon as I arrived at the hostel and even gave me a ride from Petra after I went to the Petra by Night show. I felt right at home and would recommend this hostel to everyone!

Where (not) to stay in Wadi Rum:

I stayed in Wadi Rum for 2 nights and that was too long. I wish I took a tour to Wadi Rum that allowed me to sleep there for just one night. It would have been more than enough to experience the desert, without spending too much money – because being isolated in the desert will cost you.

Moon Island Camp: I made the mistake of choosing this place to stay and deeply regretted it. The owner is a very toxic person and I saw him being rude to other guests and even employees more than once. Whatever you do, don’t stay there – it will probably ruin your Wadi Rum experience just like it did mine.

Final Thoughts: Is Jordan Right for Solo Female Travelers?

To be completely honest, I didn’t find it comfortable to travel solo as a woman in Jordan.

But the issue wasn’t simply that I’m a woman—it was that I was alone. Being unaccompanied made me feel more visible, more vulnerable, and more likely to attract unwanted attention, no matter how I dressed or behaved.

That being said, Jordan is a truly beautiful and culturally rich country, so I understand why so many solo female travelers still choose to visit. If you’re planning a trip, just go in with your eyes open: prioritize your safety, consider joining group tours and be prepared to set firm boundaries. You can still have an amazing experience—just don’t underestimate the emotional energy that solo travel in a place like Jordan can require.

If you’re planning to travel to Jordan on a low budget, there’s an essential travel hack you need to know about. It’s called the Jordan Pass and it’s something that can save you lots of money while you travel in Jordan.

It felt like an expensive investment to make. But when I started researching about it, I quickly understood that it’s so worth buying it.

The Jordan Pass is an official travel package that the Jordanian government offers. It combines visa entry fees with admission to more than 40 of Jordan’s main tourist attractions—including Petra, Wadi Rum and Jerash.

This pass is specifically designed to save you time and money when you visit Jordan. It’s very practical because you can use it all over the country just by showing the QR code on your phone.

What exactly is included in it?

One of the main advantages of the Jordan Pass is that you can get a free visa when you enter Jordan.

Citizens from many nationalities have the right to get a Visa On Arrival to visit Jordan, which usually costs 40 JOD (about 56 USD). But the Jordan Pass waives those visa fees completely. That means that you can simply show your pass at the airport and get your visa without paying any extra.

You can get a 1-day, 2-day or even 3-day ticket, depending on which package you choose.

Something important to know is that the Petra By Night Show is not included in the Jordan Pass. It’s a show that happens some times per week: on mondays, wednesdays and thursdays. It allows people to go into Petra between 8.30 and 10 pm to watch it lighted up with candles.

In order to go to that show, you need to buy a separate ticket for 17 JOD at the entrance on the day of the show. It’s not possible to buy tickets online.

Are there popular places that are not included in the Jordan Pass?

Even though it includes most of the popular attractions in Jordan, there are a few places that are not included in the pass.

One of them is Mount Nebo, which is believed to be the place where Moses viewed the Promised Land. In order to visit Mount Nebo, you will need to pay an entrance fee of 3 JOD. You can also join a tour to Mount Nebo that already includes the entrance fee.

Another popular place in Jordan that is not included is the Baptism Site. That’s also a place of high religious importance: the site where Jesus was baptized.

Entrance to the Baptism Site is 12 JOD, but you can also choose to include it in your Jordan Pass for an extra fee of 8 JOD. Make sure you choose this as a add-on when you’re buying your pass online, because you can’t add it later.

How much does the Jordan Pass cost?

It depends.

There are 3 different packages that you can get and each price is different.

The cheapest package you can buy is the Jordan Wanderer. It costs 70 JOD, which is about 100 USD. It all that mentioned above and grants you a 1-day ticket to Petra.

The other packages are called the Jordan Explorer and the Jordan Expert. The first one costs 75 JOD and includes a 2-day ticket to Petra; the other one costs 80 JOD and allows you visit Petra for 3 days.

So basically, the only difference between them is the amount of days that they allow you to spend in Petra. All the other inclusions are the same for all three packages of the Jordan Pass.

Is it worth it to buy the Jordan Pass?

The short answer is yes! Almost always.

The Jordan Pass easily pays for itself by waiving the 40 JOD visa fee and including the cost of Petra’s entrance ticket, which is at least 50 JOD. Since the cheapest package costs 70 JOD, you would be saving 20 JOD by getting it, even if you only visited Petra and no other attractions.

This makes the Jordan Pass a great deal to save money on your trip to Jordan!

Buying the Jordan Pass saved me so much money while travelling in Jordan

There is just one situation when the Jordan Pass is not worth buying.

That is if you have booked or want to book a tour that includes the Petra entrance ticket. Like I explain on this blog post, there are several ways to visit Petra and one of them is by joining a tour. Many of them don’t include the entrance ticket to visit Petra, but some do.

Here are some examples of tours to Petra that include the entrance fee:

In that case, since the price to get into Petra would already be covered in the tour price, it probably wouldn’t be worth it to buy the Jordan Pass.

There is also a situation when it’s impossible to buy the Jordan Pass: if you stay in the country for less than 2 nights. One of the requirements of the Pass is that you stay in Jordan for at least 2 nights and 3 days.

That means that if you take a tour like this, you’re actually not allowed to buy the Jordan Pass.

How can I buy it?

It’s not possible to buy the Jordan Pass in person when you arrive to Jordan. The only way to get the pass is to buy it online before you travel to Jordan.

The only place to buy it is on the official website, but it’s not always an easy task. I had a really hard time to buy it and it took me several days to manage.

I still don’t know why, but after writing my card details on the Jordan Pass Website, I got an error message and the payment didn’t go through. The first card I tried with was Revolut, which usually never fails me, but this time it did. Next time, I tried with my Lunar card and I got the same error message.

I was concerned that they would still draw the money from my account for my several attempts of paying for the pass, but thankfully they didn’t.

At the end, the only way I could pay for the Jordan Pass was by using my swedish bank card. That one worked with no problems at all.

If you’re thinking of buying the Jordan Pass for your trip to Jordan, be aware of this potential problem and try to buy it some days in advance. That way, you will have time to find a solution instead of stressing out trying and failing to pay for it last-minute.

How to Visit Petra: All Transportation Options Explained

If you’re planning a trip to Jordan, visiting Petra is probably at the top of your list – and for good reason.

This ancient Nabatean city carved into rose-red rock is one of the most iconic sites in the World and it should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

But before you can explore its majestic Treasury and winding canyons, you need to figure out how to get there from Amman.

Whether you’re looking for the fastest route, the most budget-friendly option or a comfortable organized tour, this blog post covers everything you need to know about getting from Amman to Petra.

JETT Buses 🚌

Your trip to Jordan will probably start in the capital city: Amman.

The city is located relatively close to one of Jordan’s international airports, so it’s a great idea to take some days to explore Amman before visiting Petra.

After those few days in the capital, one of the cheapest ways to get from Amman to Petra is by JETT Bus.

JETT is a company which has bus connections between several cities and touristic places in Jordan. One of those routes is between Amman in Petra and a ticket costs only 10 JOD.

I was amazed at the quality of their service, considering that my ticket was so cheap!

The bus was super comfortable and punctual, which made my trip to Petra really smooth. There is also a 20-minute coffee and toilet stop at a small store on the way, so don’t worry too much if you don’t have snacks for the trip. But be aware that the prices at that store aren’t necessarily cheap.

How to buy a ticket?

You can either buy it online or in person in Amman.

I bought my ticket online on the JETT website and the process was really smooth. I got my ticket on my email within a few seconds of paying it.

If you prefer to buy your bus ticket in person, you can do it at the Abdali JETT Office.

How many buses are there per day?

The worst part of the JETT buses between Amman and Petra is that there is only one bus per day.

To make matters worse, it’s a super early bus.

Departure is at 6.30 from Abdali JETT Office and then it makes a stop at 7th Circle. Departure from there is at 7 am, but that location is further away from the center.

Is this bus reliable?

The JETT Bus is the most reliable public transportation option to go from Amman to Petra.

It’s extremely punctual and there fixed schedules, which isn’t always the case in Jordan (see the Mini Van section below). So, if you want to be sure you have a departure at a certain time to go to Petra, the JETT Bus is a great option.

Mini Vans 🚐

Another way of getting from Amman to Petra by public transportation is by taking a mini van.

These mini vans are also very cheap but there are some important differences between them and the JETT Bus, which I will explain below.

How to buy a ticket?

One of the major differences between the JETT Bus and the mini vans going from Amman to Petra is that you can’t buy tickets online for the mini vans.

In order to get a ticket for a mini van, you need to go to the South Station in person and buy it. A ticket from Amman to Petra costs 5 JOD.

This makes it harder to plan your trip to Petra, because you can’t really plan in advance.

How many buses are there per day?

Another important difference between the JETT Bus and the mini vans is that there are several mini vans to Petra per day.

The problem is that they have no fixed schedules. They basically depart when there is enough people to fill up a mini van.

The good news is that you will probably have several departure options to go to Petra, instead of having to stick to the one and only 6.30 am JETT bus. The bad news is that you won’t be able to plan in advance because it’s impossible to say when the mini vans depart.

Joining a Tour 🎫

One of the most popular ways to visit Petra is by joining a tour.

If you are willing to pay some more in order to have a more comfortable visit to Petra, a tour might be a great option for you. That way, you will have all the transportation sorted for you and you won’t need to worry about bus schedules or how to get tickets.

There are so many tours to Petra that the most difficult part might be to choose which one to take.

One important thing to be aware of is that some tours to Petra don’t include the Petra entrance ticket! Read carefully through the description of each tour, so that you’re aware of what is included and what’s not.

The Jordan Pass is such a great deal for most people who want to visit Jordan! It waives the visa fees, gives you free entrance to Petra and to so many other places, like Wadi Rum and some attractions in Amman.

Last but not least, renting a car is one of the best ways to go to Petra.

If you’re willing to drive around Jordan, I would honestly say that having your own car is the most convenient option.

Like I explained above, visiting Petra and traveling around Jordan is possible by public transportation but it’s a hassle. Many times you will find yourself spending quite some money on transportation to get from place to place and still it won’t be easy because there aren’t many public transportation options in Jordan.

I met some people in Jordan who rented a car to get around and they were so glad about it. They said it’s so easy and convenient to drive in Jordan, and that having their own car saves them so much time. I know I would have rented my own car if I felt comfortable driving.

The Cheapest Countries I’ve Ever Visited (And Why You Should Visit Too)

Nothing makes budget-travel more exciting than discovering amazing destinations where your money goes a long way.

I’ve traveled to 45 countries so far and many of my all-time favorites are also some of the most affordable. These budget-friendly really proved to me that incredible travel experiences don’t need to come with a high price tag.

In this post, I’m sharing the 4 cheapest countries I’ve ever visited – and exactly why they deserve a spot on your travel bucket list.

Vietnam – 17€ per day

This beautiful country in Southeast Asia is considered by many as the cheapest country in the World.

Even though there’s no consensus about that, I did feel it was an extremely affordable country to visit when I spent 1 month there in 2024. For the whole time I was there, I never had to worry about my budget.

That’s such a blessing as a budget traveler!

Like I mentioned above, I spent an average of 17€ per day while traveling in Vietnam. That includes everything, from accommodation to food, transportation, activities and anything else I needed.

I think that’s the cheapest I’ve ever traveled!

Vietnam is the cheapest country I ever visited

One thing that really shocked me in Vietnam was the accommodation prices.

I know it sounds unbelievable but I actually spent an average of 3.86€ per night for my accommodations in Vietnam. I did book way in advance and stayed only at hostels, which of course helped me keep the costs at such a low level.

But Vietnam’s hotel and hostel prices in general are like nothing I’ve ever seen anywhere else in the World. Never before had I found hostels for 1€, but they exist in Vietnam.

Imagine the luxury you will get there if you’re willing to spend a bit more! You can literally get a whole studio in a 5 star hotel with an infinity pool for 50€ per night.

I know, it’s insane! But these are Vietnam’s prices, believe it or not.

On average I spent less than 4€ per night in hostels in Vietnam

Apart from super cheap accommodations all over the country, another thing I found to be cheap in Vietnam was the food.

During the 32 days I traveled around Vietnam, I spent 247€ on food. That’s about 7.71€ per day, which is basically amazing.

I do think I managed to keep my food costs down because I often bought food in supermakets instead of eating out. When I did eat out, I always looked for cheap restaurants or cafes – which isn’t hard to find in that country.

Still, it’s worth to mention that I didn’t eat at the absolute chepeast places, because I’m picky when it comes to hygiene. So that food budget could have been even lower.

On the other hand, my food expenses would have been much higher if I always ate at fancy restaurants. But even if you do that in Vietnam, I still think the total amount you spend on food will be very reasonable compared to other countries.

Another major expense while traveling is transportation.

In my experience, transportation within each country is one of the main parts of the budget. Sometimes it will cost you just as much or even more than your accommodations.

But surprise, surprise: in Vietnam you will find very affordable transportation that will get you pretty much anywhere you wanna go. And, as a plus, you will often have amazing scenery out the window like the train ride linked below.

If you’re going to travel around Vietnam, make sure you don’t miss their iconic night buses.

And when I say iconic, I mean it in both a positive and a negative way. Those buses really give me mixed feelings. They’re often a nightmare when you’re actually lying there trying to sleep. But somehow those nights make the best travel memories ever!

I’ll never forget that time I was so close to peeing in a bag in the middle of a full bus, somewhere in the mountains between Ho Chi Minh and Da Lat… Or the time they stopped the bus in the middle of the night to change a broken window.

Believe me, you’ll never forget taking a night bus in Vietnam

One thing that I honestly didn’t find that cheap in Vietnam was the tours and activities.

I expected day tours and entrance tickets to be much cheaper, since everything else seems to be so affordable there. Instead I was surprised to find some popular day tours like this one for 40€ or more.

That’s not expensive in comparison to other countries’ prices, but I couldn’t help feeling it didn’t really match the usual vietnamese prices.

But there are ways around it, like simply going to places on your own instead of taking day tours, which is often cheaper. If you really want to take some day tours or do specific activities in Vietnam, take advantage of discounts to keep your costs down.

Overall, I really loved traveling in Vietnam and I would recommend it to anyone!

Whether you’re a solo female traveler like me or you’re traveling with family or friends, there are so many interesting places to see in Vietnam. And, like you can see in this blog post, it won’t cost you any fortune!

Thailand – 26€ per day

One of my absolute favorite countries in the whole World!

After traveling to 45 countries, I must say that Thailand is one of the most special countries I’ve visited. I really think it will hold a special place in my heart forever, for so many reasons. And I’m not gonna lie: one of those reasons is how affordable Thailand is!

Apart from being a gorgeous country with a bit of everything to offer, Thailand is also a very cheap country to travel in.

It might not on the same level as Vietnam, which is ultra cheap. And some people who visited Thailand many years ago claim that prices are way higher now than they used to be.

Nonetheless, if you’re a budget-traveler looking for a paradisiac destination that will not cost you a fortune, Thailand needs to be on your list! It’s always the number 1 country I recommend to people looking for paradise on a budget.

While traveling in Thailand, I basically always stayed at hostels. As a solo female traveler, it’s the cheapest accommodation option and it’s also one of the best ways to meet people while traveling.

During the 46 days that I traveled around Thailand, I spent 350€ on accommodations. That’s an average of 7.61€ per night, which is pretty amazing, considering the quality of the hostels I stayed at.

Some of my favorites were The Street Hostel in Koh Lipe and Hugger Hostel in Phuket.

And, if you go to Chiang Rai, please do yourself a favor and book this hostel. I booked a cheaper one to save a couple of euros per night and ended up seriously regretting it. My hostel sucked so much and I just ended up hanging out at Baan Mai Kradan Hostel whenever I could, because I had friends who were staying there (thankfully!).

Some extra euros will often make a huge difference in the quality of your accommodation in Thailand

Even if you’re not willing to stay at hostels on your trip to Thailand, you can still get amazing hotel deals there.

Thailand really is one of those countries where you can get luxury for a very reasonable price.

For example, depending on the season, you can get this villa straight by a private beach in a 5 star Resort, for less than 50€ per night. This is something you wouldn’t be able to find in many other paradisiac countries, no matter the season! Which is why I can’t stop saying this: Thailand is the cheapest paradisiac destination I’ve ever visited.

Let’s talk about another major aspect of traveling to Thailand: the food.

I’m no adventurous foodie by any means and, if I’m being honest, I mostly stick to the western flavours that are most familiar to me. No matter where I go, I’ll somehow always find pizza and pasta. But while traveling in Thailand, I ended up really falling in love with the food there.

That’s because Thai food is truly delicious! I can’t get enough of mango sticky rice and Pad Thai, no matter how much I eat of it. And it comes at great prices too, like most other things in that unique country.

During the 46 days that I traveled around Thailand, I spent a total of 389€ on food. That’s an average of 8.46€ per day, which I find really reasonable.

By the way, if you’re a fruit lover, you will love Thailand extra much!

The fruit there is by far the most delicious I ever tasted (especially the mangoes) and it’s usually so cheap! For someone coming from Europe, I gotta admit I went crazy on my fruit consumption in Thailand because I just couldn’t believe the prices in comparison to the ones back home.

I used to find local markets and go there with some friends to buy fruit from the locals. Then we’d go back to the hostel with several kgs of fruit and have a picnic for just a couple of euros!

The fruit in Thailand is so delicious and cheap

One thing that can end up costing you some money in Thailand is the transportation. It’s cheap by international standards but nowhere near the dirt-cheap prices of Vietnam, for example.

On my 46-day trip around Thailand, I spent a total of 243€ in transportation.

I went to several islands, which is usually what will cost you the most money. The ferries to get from island to island in Thailand are not always cheap. Just to give you an example, I paid 52€ to go from Koh Lipe to the Phi Phi islands.

📢 JUST A SMALL BUT IMPORTANT SIDENOTE: I would NOT recommed the speedboat trip between Koh Lipe and the Phi Phi islands to anyone. I’m not joking when I say it was one of the scariest travel experiences of my life. And some of those speedboats actually capsize from time to time.

Last but not least, let’s talk about tours and activities in Thailand.

Entrance fees and day tours can be a big burden on the budget, but I didn’t find that to be the case in Thailand. There are so many cheap day tours there and, honestly, you will get so much for your money.

Just to give you some examples, here is a 7-hour snorkeling tour from Koh lipe for just 18.56€ – with lunch and fruits included! For the exact same price, you can also go on this tour to the floating markets from Bangkok.

I think you get the picture: I love Thailand and it’s basically the first country that comes to mind when people ask me for travel recommendations.

I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a paradisiac destination and a lovely population that will make you feel at home. I’d recommend it extra much for people traveling on a low-budget, because it truly is unbelievable how far you can make your money stretch there.

Nepal – around 20€ per day

Nepal is another beautiful and cheap country to include on travel bucket list.

I’ve been sharing exact numbers about my expenses in the countries that I’ve previously mentioned. It’s a bit more difficult for me to do that regarding Nepal because so many of the things I did there were sponsored, which means that my expenses wouldn’t be representative for a regular trip.

But I really feel that Nepal is one of the cheapest countries I ever visited, so I had to include it on this list.

When I traveled to Nepal, I was warned that it would probably be the poorest country I had ever visited.

Unfortunately I have to say that is true.

Nepal is a beautiful country with so many beautiful places to see, including the World’s tallest mountains, but it’s a really poor country. That’s quite obvious as soon as you land there.

But if you’re prepared to see some tough realities in which the local people live, I really think that Nepal should be on your travel bucket list.

As you can imagine, things are really cheap in Nepal.

If you’re gonna travel there, you will be able to find really affordable accommodations, even if you want a more luxurious place to stay. For example, for around 40€ you can get a deluxe room for 2 people at this 5 star hotel.

If you want the cheapest option available, you can find hostels as cheap as 3€ per night in Kathmandu.

For a couple more euros, you can stay at the hostel where I stayed. It’s called Kwabahal Garden Hostel and I loved it so much! The garden area is amazing to hang out, the staff is super friendly and they have a restaurant/cafe at the hostel that serves super tasty food.

It’s no secret that finding western food options while traveling in Asia is more expensive than eating local food. But, in Nepal, even western food is quite cheap.

I used to go to an amazing bakery called Pumpernickel Bakery in Kathmandu and paid around 4€ for a really delicious brunch.

In Pokhara, which is Nepal’s second largest city, the food scene is quite similar. Even the fanciest restaurants are so cheap! I went to this pizzeria that is expensive for nepalese standards… But you can actually get a huge Marguerita for less than 6€.

When it comes to transportation, Nepal is really cheap as well.

The country’s capital is Kathmandu and it’s located about 200 kms away from Nepal’s second biggest city, Pokhara. Even though it’s quite a long distance, you can actually get super cheap bus tickets to take you from one city to the other.

I paid around 7€ to travel by bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

When it comes to doing activities in Nepal, that’s where it gets a bit tricky.

Most people who travel to Nepal want to do some trekking. Actually Nepal is one of the World’s most popular trekking destinations. Statistics say that 171.000 people traveled to Nepal in 2019 to trekk.

That’s understandable, since that country really has some amazing mountain scenery and trekking is one of the best things to do in Nepal.

If you’re among the many thousands of people who want to visit Nepal to go on a trekking adventure in the mountains, you should be aware that it will be expensive for nepalese standards.

Most people visit Nepal for its World-famous trekking

If you’re planning a trekking trip to Nepal, just make sure you choose a good guide to take you to the mountains.

Nepal’s mountains are nothing to joke with. I learned that the hard way when I visited Nepal in December of 2024.

I booked this trekking tour to Annapurna Base Camp and little did I know that a 5 day adventure would be cut short and I’d be going back down already on the second day.

Long story short, I was warned about altitude sickness being a big deal but I have to admit that I kind of understimated it. I bought the pills I was told to take with me to the mountains but deep-down I didn’t expect to even need them.

I only understood how serious altitude sickness can be when I started feeling super sick, could barely breathe, had fever and a terrible headache.

Even though it was a really scary situation, I was glad to have chosen such a good activity provider. I booked my tour with Himalayan Nomad Treks and the guide I got was possibly the sweetest person I’ve ever met in my life.

His name is Santosh and I’m forever thankful for all his support during that difficult situation. He advised me to cut the trekking short and head back down immediately, even though he probably lost money because of not completing the trekking to the base camp.

That’s what a good guide does: he puts the safety of his clients as a the number 1 priority.

Long story short, I end up being invited to his house to meet his whole family and that was one of the most special travel experiences I’ve ever had.

If you’re gonna take one budget lesson away from this whole experience, let it be this: don’t try to save money when it comes to your health and safety.

I could have chosen a cheaper tour to Annapurna Base Camp and maybe I would have really regretted that decision.

Having a great guide to take you to the World’s tallest mountains has to be a no brainer, even if it means a higher price.

If you take those precautions and plan your trip to Nepal thoroughly, I’m sure you’ll have an amazing trip! Nepal is definitely one of the most special countries I’ve ever visited and it does leave a long-lasting impression on you. I know for sure I’ll never forget that beautiful country and its incredible people.

Malaysia – 19€ per day

The last country I’ll include on this list is actually one of those countries that didn’t really leave an impression on me.

Malaysia is a country that wins lots of people’s hearts but it somehow didn’t win mine. I visited during my 8-month trip around the World, so admittedly it had severe competition from the other amazing countries that I visited on that trip.

I don’t know if that’s the reason why Malaysia didn’t really impress me, but the truth is that it somehow didn’t.

I didn’t like it or dislike it. I was simply rather neutral about it, which doesn’t happen to me often while traveling. But despite my opinion about Malaysia, it still deserves a place on this list because it’s one of the cheapest countries I ever traveled to.

I spent 17 days traveling in Malaysia and I didn’t spend nearly as much as I thought I would.

Malaysia was the second country I went to on my big trip around the World. I had just come from Singapore, where I started that trip.

As you probably know, Singapore is known to be one of the most expensive countries in the World. So going to Malaysia afterwards felt like a great relief for the budget.

The first thing that I should mention is how affordable accommodations are in Malaysia.

On the 17 days that I spent traveling around Malaysia, I spent a total of 118€ in accommodations. That’s an average of 6.94€ per night.

Hostels in Malaysia were suprisingly good and cheap

I stayed only at hostels, like usual; and I planned way in advance. Those two aspects probably helped me get the best accommodation deals, but I do think you can find cheap places to stay in Malaysia no matter what.

My favorite hostels in Malaysia were Traveller Bunker in the Cameron Highlands and De Cafe & Rest House in the city of Ipoh (both pictured above). Especially that last one felt like a boutique hotel and it was actually one of my favorites of my whole 8-month trip.

If you want a really cool view of the Petronas Towers from an infinity pool, stay at Penthouse on 34 or at Regalia Skypool KLCC. These hostels and many others are located in the same building with a shared infinity pool that probably has the number 1 best view of the Petronas Towers.

I stayed at Regalia Skypool KLCC and the hostel was basically an apartment turned into a hostel, so not the nicest place really. But it costed me only 7.16€ per night and that was so worth it in order to have access to that rooftop pool!

Next up: how cheap is the food in Malaysia?

During the 17 days I traveled around Malaysia, I spent a total of 143€ on food. That’s an average of 8.41€ per day, which is even cheaper than Thailand.

I’m gonna be honest and admit that I didn’t really like the food in Malaysia. Which might have been the reason why I didn’t spend a lot on food while I was there. And also the reason why I lost weight.

But even so, I did notice that the food in Malaysia was cheap. You can usually find meals for about 2 or 3€ if you choose the cheapest places to eat, which is super affordable.

When it comes to tours and activities in Malaysia, I didn’t spend much money at all.

During my whole stay of 17 days, I only spent a total of 32€ on activities. That’s not necessarily because activities in Malaysia are dirt-cheap. It was motsly because I did most things myself and there are many free things to do in Malaysia.

That’s actually a huge plus about that country: it’s super easy to get where you wanna go without needing to book a tour. But even if you do wanna take tours in Malaysia, they’re usually quite affordable and won’t break your budget.

Transportation in Malaysia is also super cheap.

I spent only 76€ in total and that even includes a domestic flight from Penang to Langkawi. That was only possible because bus rides within Malaysia were really cheap! Just to give you an example, I paid 2.73€ for my bus ride from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur.

That made it easy and stress-free to travel around the country using public transportation, so you definitely shouldn’t worry about transportation when you go to Malaysia.

Considering all of this, I do think that Malaysia is a nice country to visit if you’re a budget-traveller.

Like I mentioned before, I just wasn’t my cup of tea at the time when I visited. But I’ve talked to so many others who loved Malaysia, so I might give it another chance sometime!

How to Travel Cheap: 7 Budget-Friendly Tips

One of the questions people asked me the most is: how can you travel so much?

I get what people mean. They are wondering how the hell I manage to travel to so many countries without being super rich. To be honest, I don’t blame them.

I grew up thinking that travelling is only for rich people. I was 100% convinced that I would either become very wealthy and manage to travel; or I would never manage to go anywhere. Until I realized that’s not true at all. There’s another way.

I never had much money growing up, never had fancy jobs with huge salaries or money falling from the sky. Somehow, I still managed to make so many of my travel dreams come true. That’s because I learned to travel with very little money.

After visiting more than 40 countries, I’ve understood how to travel on a low-budget. Now, one of my biggest goals as a content creator is to prove to everyone that it’s possible and, above all, achievable!

Choose cheap destinations

Let’s start with the obvious: if you’re trying to travel on a low budget, you need to travel to cheap countries.

Many people look at me weird when I give them this tip. I get it, it sounds like the most obvious thing, right?

But you would be surprised to know how many people underestimate this.

I’ve made that mistake myself and underestimated how much I would spend in expensive countries. I fooled myself into thinking I could somehow do it cheaply because I’m frugal. But the hard truth is there is only so much you can do to save money in extremely expensive countries.

So, if you want to make sure you travel on a low budget, your best bet is to go to cheap countries where your money will go a long way.

Some perfect examples are Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. I visited all of those countries when I traveled around the World for 8 months, because I wanted to travel cheaply. I really didn’t regret it for a second!

Countries like that are so beautiful and interesting, while also allowing you to explore freely without worrying about your budget.

Here is the daily average I spent in those countries:

Thailand: 26€
Malaysia: 19€
Vietnam: 17€

Of course I had to apply some other tricks to keep my expenses on such a low level while traveling in those countries. But the fact remains that it’s only possible because countries like that are so budget-friendly.

Find the best flight deals

After you decide which countries you will visit, it’s time to find the cheapest flights to get there. Many times, the flights will be a big expense while travelling. That’s why it’s crucial that you learn how to find the absolute best deals if you are serious about traveling on a low budget.

After booking many dozens of flights, I swear by a website that most travelers have discovered by now: Skyscanner.

I’ve met many people who still don’t dare to book a flight outside of the official airline website.

I understand why and I’ve been there myself. When I started traveling, I used to check Skyscanner, see those big price differences between the different websites and think to myself “I’m sure half of these are scams“. I was so scared of getting to the airport and being told I had no real flight ticket.

If you have thought the same, you’re not alone!

But as an experienced traveler, I can guarantee you that the flights shown on Skyscanner are not scams. Skyscanner simply compares the different websites where flights are available for sale and, after several years of booking flights there, I can guarantee you that those websites are legit.

Some of my favorites are Trip.com, Booking.com and MyTrip.com.

You might be wondering “How is this related to traveling on a low budget?“

It’s related because buying flights through companies like Trip.com or MyTrip.com is often cheaper than buying them through the official airline website. I’ve lost count of the money I’ve saved by booking flights through those websites!

And if you’re thinking “ok, but I’m sure it’s super problematic to use those websites in case anything goes wrong or I want to cancel my flight” – think again.

I recently booked a flight to the Dominican Republic through Trip.com and had to cancel it. I had booked it with free cancelation but still worried it would be a hassle to get my money back. Instead, I was surprised to see I got a refund just a few days after canceling the flight!

So, if you’re still worried about using Skyscanner to book your flights, don’t be.

It does take some getting used to, if you’ve always booked your flights through the official airline. But once you start using Skyscanner, you will see how much money you’re saving and you’ll never wanna go back!

Get free accommodation

Besides flights, your accommodations will be another major expense on your trips! Even if you’re traveling to cheap countries and can find hostels as cheap as 2€ a night, not having to pay anything at all for your accommodation is a game-changer as a low-budget traveler.

So, how can you get free accommodation while traveling?

There are several ways, such as using Couchsurfing to stay with friendly locals who are willing to loan you their couch, or Housesitting, which allows you to stay for free in people’s houses in exchange for taking care of their pets while they are away.

Many budget travelers use those websites to get free accommodation but I have to admit that I’ve never tried them myself, so I can’t recommend them to you based on own experience.

But there is something else I do for free accommodation while traveling and it has been a complete game-changer for me!

Finding a way to get free accommodation was such a game-changer for me

The way I get free accommodation while traveling is through volunteering in exchange for a free stay.

I do this through a website called Worldpackers.

They are one of the biggest platforms to find volunteering opportunities around the whole World. More than 100.000 people have volunteered through them and when I decided to give it a chance, my only regret was not trying sooner!

By visiting their website or app, you can find volunteering opportunities in more than 140 countries. Those opportunities are super diverse. Some of them are at hostels, some are in NGOs and some are even related to people’s personal projects like renovating a house or running a farm.

When you click each opportunity, you will see a description of it and what is expected from the volunteers. The tasks required from the volunteers can be anything from housekeeping to administration, teaching, content creation, etc.

You will also be able to see what is offered to the volunteers. Sometimes all you get is free accommodation, which is nice enough. But some volunteering opportunities even offer free meals or tours.

If you want to apply for a position, you need to become a member of Worldpackers. It costs a yearly fee, starting at 59$ for the cheapest plan. Once you’re in, you can apply for as many volunteering opportunities as you want for a whole year.

So, even though I know that initial fee stops many people from joining, I can’t stress enough how much it’s worth the money considering how much you will save on accommodations. Not to mention the amazing travel experiences you will have and all the people you will meet.

Travel slowly

This is something I severely underestimated until very recently.

I had always traveled a rather fast pace, spending some days in each place and moving quite often. I never really questioned that way of traveling and in a way I felt that I was saving money by not hanging out for too long in a place.

Then I did my big 8-month trip around the World and discovered the importance of slow travel.

It took me a while to become aware of it, but slow travel (combined with other factors) was saving me a lot of money when I was on my trip around the World.

The main reason why that happens is that it’s the moving around that costs you lots of money.

What do I mean by this? Let me explain.

I was keeping track of every single cent I spent on my trip around the World (keep ready to learn how to keep track of that). I knew exactly how much I was spending, in what kinds of things I was spending and how much I was spending per day. That meant I could see which days were the most expensive, and those were ALWAYS the travel days.

Whenever I was moving from place to place, my daily expenses would at least double – if not more. That happened even if I was travelling in cheap countries.

Travel days are always the ones ruining your budget

Once I realized that I spent way more money on days when I was moving from one place to another, I started travelling at a slower pace. And, to be honest, I’m convinced that’s one of the main reasons I managed to spend so little money on my trip around the World.

In 8 months, I visited 11 countries.

In several occasions, I stayed in the same country for longer than a month. A huge bonus of staying in each country for a longer time is that it gave me time to volunteer, which saved me tons of money on accommodation like I explained above. It also meant less international flights, which definitely helped the budget as well.

After experiencing that type of travelling and understanding that it not only saves me money but also feels way more authentic and relaxing, I’ve completely changed my way of travelling.

Don’t pay unnecessary fees

Another thing that I ignored for years were the annoying exchange fees I was paying.

Not only were they annoying but also completely unnecessary. I knew in the back of my mind that I was paying too much on those hidden fees every time I swiped my card abroad, but I didn’t wanna face the issue because it felt too complicated.

I knew nothing about international bank accounts and cards, so I just felt intimidated to even look into it. Until I did, one day. And that’s when I realized how much money I wasted.

I wasted money on unnecessary currency exchange fees for years

If you’re still using your bank card from your country’s account to make payments in other currencies, you’re making the same mistake I did for years.

What’s the problem with it, actually?

Let’s say you have a bank account in Europe and your money is in €. Then you take a trip to Thailand and everything is charged in their local currency, obviously, which is Thai Baht. When you swipe your european card containing € to pay for Thai Baht, your bank is going to exchange your € to Thai Baht. As you might imagine, the exchange rate used by the bank won’t be the most beneficial for you, so you will lose money on that.

Besides, the bank will likely charge you all kinds of hidden fees that you don’t even know about. That’s what made me scared to even look at my swedish bank account after each trip I took abroad.

So, how to solve this problem?

You simply open an international account in a bank that is beneficial for travelers. The one I use is the World-famous Revolut.

So many travelers already use Revolut but in the slight chance that you might not know about it or maybe you haven’t dared to try it yet, I felt I had to mention it here. It has definitely been one of the biggest game-changers for me when it comes to having control over my travel expenses.

With Revolut, you can have several different accounts in different currencies, within the same bank account. You can exchange money on the app and there are no hidden fees at all. Any fee they might charge is explicit in a warning before you proceed.

Their most basic plan is completely free, so you really don’t have much to lose by giving it a try. Order your card here and stop wasting money on those annoying hidden fees.

Research and save cheap places to eat on Google Maps

This is a budget travel tip that I read on an article years ago and I never forgot it ever since.

It might seem like the most trivial thing, or something that wouldn’t really make a difference on your travel expenses. But I can guarantee you that that’s far from the truth.

So, basically this is what I do: before I go on any trip, I research to find the best cheap restaurants in the places where I’m going.

I Google and check Tripadvisor to discover which places have the cheapest meals on their menus. When I find a well-reviewed restaurant with good prices and delicious-looking food, I save that restaurant on my Google Maps. As you can see in the images above, I have a specific list I created for Restaurants.

I’ve researched and saved hundreeds of restaurants around the World

By pinning good and cheap restaurants on Google Maps in the cities I will visit, I never have to worry about paying too much for overpriced food at a tourist trap.

Because believe me, that’s what you end up doing when you’re walking around hungry in an unknown city, having no idea where to find good food for a reasonable price. You will likely take whatever you can find and risk being disappointed and likely ripped off.

This way, you can simply open your Google Maps and check which cheap restaurant you’re close to. Then you go eat there, instead of looking around in the dark. Practical, isn’t it?

Besides my list for restaurants, I also have one for cafes and even another one for groceries and local markets. Because, as you can imagine, supermarkets are often cheaper than restaurants… And we’re doing all we can to travel low-budget, aren’t we?

Use this app to keep track of your expenses

Keeping track of your expenses might feel scary. Believe me, I get it: it feels daunting to write down every cent you spend and basically watch the money fly out the window.

I know for a fact that’s why most people don’t keep track of their expenses while traveling. They might also not understand how important it is.

But after visiting more than 40 countries and only starting to track my expenses very recently, I have understood how crucial it is.

That’s why I had to include it on this blog post as one of my best tips to travel on a low-budget.

Tracking my expenses while travelling has been a game-changer for me

The reason why I’m convinced that tracking your expenses while travelling is super important is because it will be a constant reminder of your budget.

If you’re serious about travelling budget-friendly, the last thing you need to getting lost in impulsive small expenses that eventually add-up to big sums of money. Keeping track of every single cent you spend will help you make sure you don’t get out of track like that.

What I’ve noticed is that it’s all about awareness.

When you’re aware of where your money is going, it’s much easier to feel in control of it. When you’re simply spending and hoping for the best, you’re unaware of your budget. I guarantee you that’s not gonna help you to travel on a low-budget.

10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Backpacking Around the World

Planning my backpacking trip around the World was one of the scariest, most difficult and most overwhelming things I’ve ever done. Deep down I knew it was my destiny to go out there on this adventure because travelling the World had always been my dream, but it’s definitely not an easy task to handle.

If you’re considering to embark on a similar adventure and feel the weight of that task on your shoulders, just know that you are not alone! You are not the first nor the last person who goes on such an adventure and you will be fine with the right preparation.

After having travelled solo around the World for 8 months, here are 10 pieces of advice I wish someone told me before I even embarked on that first flight to Singapore.

There is always a flight back home

Through all my trips, this is by far the best piece of advice I have ever heard.

If you’re planning a huge adventure like mine, it’s completely normal to be scared. Especially if you are doing such a thing for the first time, it will feel like a huge dangerous step. In fact, if it doesn’t feel like that, you’re probably not doing it right. Those butterflies are meant to be there!

Even though I know that to be true, I also know that going out there and ending up not liking the experience or somehow not wanting to continue anymore, is no big deal.

Remember this: as long as you have money for a flight back home, you are fine!

It’s cheaper than you think

Before I went on my backpacking trip around the World, I lived in Sweden and saved money for that adventure for years. I was so scared of not having enough money and thought I needed so much in order to travel full-time for 8 months.

I’m European and I’m therefore very used to European prices. Plus, having lived in Scandinavia for almost 8 years, I had gotten used to everything being overpriced and people having to learn how to live with that. I could only imagine that, even though some countries are cheap, money would fly out the window when I started travelling full-time.

I eventually gathered the courage to go out there and test it out though, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was completely wrong.

First of all, some countries were not nearly as expensive as I thought they would be. That’s the case of Japan, where I thought I would need so much money to travel but ended up spending an average of just 37€ per day.

And even though some of the other countries I visited are super expensive, such as Australia and Canada, I still didn’t need nearly as much money for my 8 months of backpacking around the World as I thought I would.

Between volunteering positions, really cheap accommodations in some countries and other tricks to keep costs down while backpacking, I managed to spend way less than I thought I would on my trip.

The World is not as dangerous as people say it is

You have no idea how many negative comments I heard when I told everyone about my crazy idea of circumnavigating the Globe for 8 months on my own.

Many people supported me and told me how inspired they were by my courage to go out there solo, but I couldn’t help but notice the concern and anxiety that some people close to me felt regarding this whole idea. Suddenly I was being interrogated about why I had to go out there all alone, why I couldn’t wait until I had someone to go with and if I was even aware of “all the things that could happen”.

I went out there and made that dream of mine come true anyway though, and let me tell you one of the biggest lessons I learned: the World is not as dangerous as people think.

I’m not saying that all countries are safe for solo female travelers. There are obviously many countries where we need to take many precautions and face risks, but you don’t need to jump head first to those countries on your first big backpacking trip.

I did lots of research about the best countries for first-time backpackers and quickly understood that South East Asia is one of the best places in the World to have that first experience.

I read so much and watched so many Youtube videos about solo female travelers backpacking in SE Asia that I grew comfortable with that idea and decided it would be the safest place to plan my trip in.

So, if you’re worried about the dangers out there, my best piece of advice is this: do lots of research about several areas of the World and see which one you are more comfortable with. Not all parts of the World are difficult and dangerous to travel in and South East Asia is the perfect example of that!

You will meet loads of people

I have traveled solo to more than 20 countries and even before I went on my backpacking trip around the World, I had quite some experience as a solo traveler. I had learned that solo traveling doesn’t mean you will always be alone and that it’s actually one of the best ways to meet new people, because you are completely open to the new opportunities around you.

The fact remains though that when you’re about to take that scary step of going out there on your own for several months and in a place that is so far away from home, fears starts to kick in.

Suddenly I was worrying that I would not meet anyone and that I would regret the whole idea. That’s what stepping so much outside of your comfort zone does to you: you start questioning everything and you are very likely to feel overwhelmed.

If you are planning a big trip like mine and feel scared that you’re not going to meet people and that loneliness will kick in, it’s completely normal. Those fears are just a symptom of finally taking a scary step in your life but you will meet so many people out there who had the exact same fears as you when they first started their trip.

Those are the people who will become new friends and share this experience with you and that’s the magic of solo traveling!

You will never see yourself or the World the same way again

One of the main things that really changed in me after my big backpacking trip was my idea of the World. I had traveled to far-away places before on vacation, but I had never traveled full-time for such a long period of time and that’s a completely different way of traveling.

I think that when you leave your stable life behind and give up your comfort zone at home to take such a big step and travel the World with no strings attached, you are bound to change forever.

I had lived in Sweden for almost 8 years when I decided to leave everything and go to the other side of the World to start my biggest adventure ever. I loved the life I had there, my job, my friends and the beautiful and peaceful place where I lived. But I knew I had to make this dream come true.

Long story short, I made it happen and after everything I experienced during this lifechanging trip, there is no way I can ever see the World the same way again. Now the World feels smaller and I feel more than ever that I can do anything I set my mind to, no matter how scary it feels at first. That’s the power of a trip like this: it will change you and your vision forever!

Making a strict plan is a waste of time

For a whole year before my trip around the World, I was planning it like a maniac. I felt like I had to know exactly where I was going, when I was going there, how I would book the tickets, where I would sleep…

Just to give you an idea, I basically had 8 months’ worth of accommodations booked in advance by the time I embarked on my trip. Everyone told me it was a waste of time because I would change my mind as I went but I didn’t listen because I was trying to grasp whatever feeling of security my plans were giving me.

Planning is an important part of any trip but don’t overdo it

While I do think that doing your research and planning your trip is an amazing way to feel safer and more confident before you go, I learned that people were right when they said I was wasting my time planning too much.

There were so many countries I planned to go to but didn’t, so many countries I never thought I’d visit on this trip but ended up visiting and so many accommodations I had to cancel because of changes of plans!

The lesson I learned thanks to this was to design a general plan and do research but try not to stress too much about the planning. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you’re going to figure it all out as you go.

But being too spontaneous isn’t always the best idea either

On the other hand, making no plans and relying simply on going with the flow and being spontaneous definitely isn’t always the best option either.

While some countries are easy to travel in with no plans, some others require some careful preparation in order for you to fully enjoy your trip. A good example of that during my trip was Canada. I’ve never seen such an expensive country as Canada and that’s why I planned and booked accommodations so much in advance.

If you decide to visit such an expensive country with no plans and expect to be able to improvise your way forward without spending a fortune, you might be shocked by the result.

What I would recommend is to do some research about accommodation prices and transportation options in the countries you plan to visit. If you notice that hotel and hostel prices are high and there aren’t many transportation options to choose from, that’s a sign that you shouldn’t rely too much on being spontaneous when you visit that country.

This experience will probably change your way of traveling

Backpacking is by far the most life-changing experience I’ve ever had. I always had a feeling I would feel like this after my trip but, to be honest, I had no idea how much backpacking around the World would completely change my way of traveling.

Before leaving my stable life in Sweden and venturing out there on my own to circumnavigate the globe, I traveled a lot on my days off and when I was on vacation. I loved both my solo trips and the trips I went on with loved ones and I always tried to fit as much as I possible could on those days out there exploring.

I never stopped to think if that’s the best way of doing things or if it’s my favorite way of travelling, because I had to make my trips work around my work-schedule. So I basically looked for cheap flights on the dates I had available and off I went to some place nearby.

Once I started my big backpacking trip though, I quickly realized that I like full-time travel way more than the way in which I used to travel. Suddenly I was realizing that I could keep costs down way easier because I didn’t have to rush back home after a long weekend or a couple of weeks of vacation, plus I was enjoying my experience abroad way more because it didn’t even feel like just a vacation! It felt like I was immersing myself in the country in a totally different way and that was one of the most life-changing things I ever experienced while traveling.

As I kept backpacking, I realized that a slower travel pace fits me way better as well. Suddenly I didn’t have to change hotels every other day and could stay in a place I really enjoyed for a whole week or two if I felt like it.

I could catch opportunities to volunteer abroad, because I had all the time in the World instead of just a short vacation. Not only did that allow me to take it slow and really immerse myself in different cultures, but it also saved me a lot of money on accommodations.

I could also be super flexible while booking flights, so I usually got the best deals flying on the cheapest dates. You’ll notice that flying on specific dates because you’re trying to make your trip work on your strict vacation dates, can cost you loads of money.

After such an experience, I don’t think I can ever go back to the way I travelled before. Backpacking full-time changed me and my way of travelling forever.

Keeping track of your expenses is more important than you think

As I mentioned above, not having enough money for my backpacking trip around the World was one of my main worries before I took that one-way ticket to the other side of the World.

Going so far out of your comfort zone makes you feel that anything can go wrong and I that’s why I think it’s completely normal to worry about money flying out the window way too fast. You would be irresponsible to not thing about those things, since money is one of the most important things while traveling.

That’s why one of the most important things I did on my backpacking trip was to keep track of every single cent I spent.

It might seem daunting at first because you’re literally counting your hard-earned money being spent, but I guarantee you that keeping track of your expenses will make you feel much more in control of your trip.

In order to do that, I used one of my favorite apps of all times. It’s called TravelSpend and there are so many functions that made my life SO much easier while backpacking!

When you download the app, it will ask you for your total budget and the start and end dates. That’s how your daily budget is going to be calculated and as you write down your expenses every day, it will calculate how well you’re staying on track or need to work harder to stay on budget.

I often hear solo travelers say that traveling solo does wonders for your self-confidence. It can be such a daunting experience at first, but realizing that you can actually go out there all by yourself and make your dreams come true is the best feeling ever.

I have been travelling solo since I was 22 and those solo trips made my self-confidence grow stronger and stronger, but I noticed an even bigger boost when I went on my backpacking trip around the World.

Solo travel can be a daunting thing, especially as a female.

Unfortunately we still live in a World where women are in much more danger than men. So believe me when I say that I understand the fear of venturing out there on your own as a woman.

But there are good news: you’re not alone!

More and more women are starting to travel solo for so many different reasons and it’s such a revolution! Exploring the World by ourselves and in our own terms is empowering so many women and giving them the freedom they deserve.

I’ve traveled solo to more than 20 countries and it’s by far my favorite way of traveling, so keep reading if you wanna know my list of the 5 best countries to visit as a first-time solo female traveler.

Thailand

My favorite country for solo female travelers: Thailand!

I have so many great memories from this gorgeous country and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Let me tell you some of the reasons why it would be the perfect place for you to start your solo adventures.

First of all, I loved traveling in Thailand because it’s so easy to meet people! If you’re feeling scared about traveling solo for the first time because you fear being lonely, Thailand has got you covered!

That country is such a paradise for tourism in general and especially backpackers, so I guarantee you that you will meet new people all the time on your solo trip to Thailand.

Apart from that, Thailand is also a country where you don’t have to worry about feeling bored. There is so much to see and do, so I always felt super excited to explore while I was solo traveling there!

From tropical islands with paradisiac beaches to History and towns full of beautiful temples, Thailand is such a complete destination and you will fall in love with it instantly.

Another very important aspect that makes me recommend Thailand to all first-time solo female travelers is that I always felt safe there.

Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles and after being there three times, I really understand why. The thai people are so friendly and nice that you will feel right at home the moment you arrive!

I always felt like I could ask anyone for help and they would do whatever they could to help me. It’s such an important thing to feel safe and welcomed as a solo female traveler, especially when you’re on your first solo trip.

Last but not least, I think that Thailand is the perfect country for your first solo trip because it’s such an easy country to travel in.

Norway

My second favorite country for first-time solo female travelers is one of the most beautiful countries I ever visited.

Located in Northern Europe, Norway is part of Scandinavia. With that, comes lots of stereotypes. People expect Scandinavian countries to be clean, organized, reliable, safe and developed, amongst many other things.

After having lived in Sweden for nearly 8 years and visiting all Scandinavian countries, I’m very pleased to tell you that all of those stereotypes are correct and Norway is no exception!

I found it to be a super organized and easy country to travel in, which made my solo trip there so smooth and pleasant.

Besides being famous for having so many qualities, Scandinavians are also known for being cold and reserved people.

After living in Sweden for so many years, I have to confirm that it’s true. But I also have to admit that I found the Norwegians to be quite friendly and nice people who were willing to help more than I would expect any Scandinavians to do!

I usually felt comfortable asking for help or directions on my solo trip to Norway, which I think is such an important aspect for solo female travelers.

Besides, I don’t think there are many other countries where I felt as safe as in Norway. It’s a country that is known for being very advanced when it comes to women’s rights and equality, which I really felt when I was there.

One of the few downsides of traveling in Norway as a solo traveler is that it’s not easy to meet people.

Since it’s an expensive country, it doesn’t really attract a lot of backpackers or other types of solo travelers. That can make it quite difficult to come across people to hang out with in case you wanted to.

That being said, I really think that Norway is an amazing country for your first solo trip, especially if you want to truly experience some alone time!

It’s such a beautiful country with so much to see and do that, in my opinion, it is best experienced in the peacefulness of your own company.

Taiwan

Even though it’s not a very popular country to visit, I really think that Taiwan is a great destination for any traveller and especially for solo female travelers.

I didn’t even plan on going to Taiwan but ended up getting accepted for a volunteering position there. I decided to give it a chance and ended up completely falling in love with that country!

One of the reasons that makes me think that Taiwan is a great choice for your first solo trip is the fact that it’s such a small and compact country.

When you’re embarking on your first-ever solo trip, the last thing you want is to arrive in a huge country and feeling super overwhelmed. That’s the reason why I wouldn’t recommend for example Japan for your first solo trip. Even though it’s an ultra safe country, I think Japan is too big, complex and overwhelming for a first-time solo traveler.

That’s the exact opposite of what Taiwan feels like!

I always felt so at ease there and didn’t have to worry at all about transportation. Their transportation system is so great and the island is quite small, so most places very easily accessible.

Another thing I really loved about traveling solo in Taiwan was the fact that I always felt so safe there.

I mostly stayed in Beitou, which is the area where my volunteering position was. I felt ultra safe there no matter the hour. Even when I traveled to other places in Taiwan, such as Hualien and Chiayi, I always felt really safe even if I arrived alone somewhere at night.

Besides being such an easy and safe country to travel in, another reason that made me really love Taiwan as a solo female traveler was the friendliness of the taiwanese people.

I lost count of how many times I asked for help with directions and the local people of Taiwan went all-in to make sure they helped me get to where I wanted to go. There was a big language-barrier sometimes, but they were always so friendly and helpful!

I will also never forget the conversations I had with random people in Taiwan, which left me with such great memories of that country.

Hungary

Another one of my favorite countries for first-time solo travelers is Hungary and there are so many reasons for that!

First of all, I absolutely love Budapest.

It’s my favorite european capital and I will always return to that amazing city no matter how many times I have visited. It’s so beautiful, full of things to do and perfect for a solo weekend at their many thermal baths.

Apart from Budapest, there is so much more to explore in Hungary.

I visited Eger, a hidden gem nearby and the famous Miskolctapolca Cave Bath all on my own and had such a great time! Apart from those places, there is so much more I would love to explore in that amazing country, so I’m sure I will take another solo trip there whenever I have the chance.

While I was exploring Hungary, I always found the locals to be super nice and helpful no matter where I was.

An example that truly made me feel welcome in that country was when I arrived in Eger at night and could somehow not make my internet work so I was completely lost. The locals did everything in their power to help me find my way to the hotel I had booked. That’s exactly the vibe you want in the country where you’re taking your first ever solo trip.

Another reason why I loved Hungary as solo traveler was the fact that it’s such a cheap country.

One of the downsides of traveling solo is that some things can become more expensive, such as accommodations and transportation in some occasions.

If you’re trying to keep costs down as much as possible, you could always stay at hostels; but if you would like to take advantage of the low prices in Hungary, you could even have a private room for the same price that a hostel bed would cost you in other countries.

Italy

Last but not least, I have to mention one of my absolute favorite countries in the World.

Including Italy on a list of best countries for first-time solo travelers might be controversial. But I do believe it’s a good choice for your first solo trip, even if some precautions are needed!

Italy is known for having a very warm culture and people. Many italians have a temperament and they are very outspoken people, which can be both good and bad. It makes for a very fun population but it can also bring some problems, especially if you’re a woman!

All I mean is this: be prepared to be cat-called or even hit on, because italian men do have that tendency. It can be annoying but I wouldn’t say it’s dangerous for solo female travelers.

That being said, Italy is one of my absolute favorite countries to take solo trips in and I’m sure it will make for a perfect first solo trip when you decide to venture out there on your own!

If you decide to choose Italy as the destination of your first ever solo trip, simply keep in mind these basic solo female traveler rules and I’m sure you will be fine:

If possible, don’t arrive late at night – When you’re booking your flight to Italy, try to choose one that doesn’t arrive late at night. I have always felt safe in Italy except when I arrived really late somewhere, so I have learned to avoid it.

Be careful with your valuables – There can be quite some pickpocketing in Italy, so don’t let your guard down.

Try to not walk alone at night if you’re visiting a big italian city – There are bad areas in all the major italian cities, so except when you’re in the italian countryside, try to be back at your hostel/hotel at an early hour.

I always take these precautions when I visit Italy on a solo trip and it helps me feel safe every time, in order to enjoy that amazing country that has so much to offer!
