How to Visit Hobbiton: A Complete Guide to Tours, Prices & Budget Tips (2026)

If you’ve ever watched The Lord of the Rings, you’ve probably imagined walking through the Shire at least once. It’s peaceful, green and almost unreal — and for many people, it sits high on the travel bucket list.

I didn’t plan a trip to New Zealand just to visit Hobbiton. I went there because I needed to activate my Working Holiday Visa by entering the country — a requirement that ended up sending me halfway across the world.

Traveling that far just to meet a visa condition felt a bit surreal at first. But once the trip was confirmed, I realized I’d be in the only place in the World where the Shire actually exists. That quickly turned a practical trip into one of the most special travel experiences I’ve ever had.

If you’re dreaming of experiencing it yourself, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set — including how to get there, the different tour options, what they cost and practical tips to help you choose the right experience and make the most of your visit.

🌿 What is the Hobbiton Movie Set?

Whenever you’ve watched The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit movies and wondered, “Does this place actually exist?” — the answer is yes.

I know it looks unreal, but it’s not. The perfectly green and idyllic landscape you see on screen really exists, tucked away in New Zealand’s countryside. When I first watched the movies years ago, I never imagined that regular people like me could actually visit the Shire. But I was glad to discover that you can.

👉 If you’re in a rush and just want a quick recommendation, here is the tour I took and 100% recommend. Otherwise, keep reading — I’ll walk you through all the different ways to visit Hobbiton so you can choose the option that works best for you.

The story behind Hobbiton makes it even more interesting. This piece of land originally belonged to a farmer in New Zealand and was discovered by the film production team during a search for the perfect filming location. Once they found it, they worked with the farmer to build the Shire and used it for the first Lord of the Rings movies.

However, the set was initially temporary. After filming, it was taken down, as the production didn’t expect the films to become as globally successful as they did.

So how come you can you visit it today? When the filmmakers returned years later to film The Hobbit trilogy, they approached the same farm again. This time, the agreement was different: the set would be rebuilt — but only if it was made permanent.

Thanks to that decision, the Hobbiton Movie Set still exists today, allowing visitors from all over the world to walk through the Shire and experience it in real life, complete with dozens of hobbit holes and beautifully maintained surroundings.

🧭 Where is Hobbiton & How to Get There

Hobbiton Movie Set is located in the Waikato region on New Zealand’s North Island, near the small town of Matamata. It’s set in a rural area surrounded by rolling farmland, which is exactly what makes the location feel so peaceful and immersive in real life.

Most visitors reach Hobbiton from nearby cities such as Auckland, Rotorua, Hamilton or Matamata.

Keep reading to explore the different ways to visit Hobbiton and choose the option that best fits your travel style.

🚘 Option 1: Self-Drive

Even though I didn’t rent a car when I was in New Zealand, it’s by far the best option for getting around the country. New Zealand is well known for not having a strong public transportation system, which is why most people choose to rent a car and road trip their way through the North and South Islands.

The only reason I didn’t do it myself is simple — I hate driving. But if you’re comfortable being behind the wheel (and driving on the left side of the road), renting a car gives you the most flexibility and freedom.

If you want to drive to Hobbiton:

  • Drive to this location 👉 Important: You can’t drive directly to the Hobbiton Movie Set where the hobbit holes are located. All visitors must check in at The Shire’s Rest (the official reception area), where shuttle buses take you onto the set.
  • Join your pre-booked Hobbiton tour from there, because you cannot visit Hobbiton on your own. All visitors must enter Hobbiton on a guided tour.

🚌 Option 2: Guided Tour

If you prefer not to drive, booking a guided day tour from Auckland or Rotorua is one of the easiest ways to visit Hobbiton — and it’s exactly what I did.

I already knew before arriving in New Zealand that I had absolutely no interest in driving there, so choosing this guided tour made the entire experience feel much simpler and far less stressful.

No, it’s not the cheapest way to visit Hobbiton. But personally, I think the convenience was completely worth it. I didn’t have to worry about navigating rural roads, organizing transportation or figuring out logistics — I could simply relax and enjoy the experience.

👉 I’ll explain all the different Hobbiton tour types, prices and budget options later in this guide.

💡 TIP: if you want to travel in New Zealand without renting a car, booking a guided tour from Auckland to Hobbiton can also be a smart way to get around the country. Some tours are one-way, meaning they start in Auckland, take you to Hobbiton and finish in places like Rotorua (like this one). This way, you’re not just visiting Hobbiton, but also using the tour as a convenient way to get from one city to another.

🚐 Option 3: Taking Public Transport to Hobbiton – is it possible?

It’s not the most convenient way to visit Hobbiton, but yes, it is possible to get there using public transportation. While there is no direct bus to the Hobbiton Movie Set, you can take an InterCity bus to Matamata — the closest town to Hobbiton.

This website will be your best friend if you’re planning to travel around New Zealand using public transport 🚌

There are regular InterCity buses to Matamata from cities such as AucklandRotorua and Hamilton, so you can plan your journey depending on where you’re starting from.

But how do you get to Hobbiton itself from Matamata?

That’s the important part — InterCity buses will only take you as far as Matamata. From there, you’ll need to arrange transport to The Shire’s Rest (the official Hobbiton check-in point), either by taking a taxi or by booking this Hobbiton tour that includes transfers from Matamata to the movie set.

🎟️ Hobbiton Tours & Prices Explained

There are several different ways to experience Hobbiton, ranging from basic entry tickets to premium evening experiences with banquet dinners inside the Green Dragon Inn.

The best option really depends on your budget, travel style and whether you want the cheapest possible visit or a more convenient and immersive Middle-earth experience.

💸 Cheapest Option: Hobbiton Movie Set Guided Tour Ticket – 65€

If your goal is to visit Hobbiton for the cheapeast price possible, this is it. It’s the most basic option, but might be worth considering if you’re traveling on a low-budget and don’t mind a more simplified experience.

Choose between:

  • This tour if you don’t need transfers from Matamata (perfect if you’re renting a car and can drive to The Shire’s Nest)
  • Or this tour if you need roudtrip transfers from Matamata

Both of these tours cost 65€ no matter if transfers are included or not, which is an amazing price to experience Hobbiton.

These tours include:

  • Entry to the Hobbiton Movie Set
  • A 2.5 hour guided tour through the Shire
  • Access to filming locations and hobbit holes
  • A complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn
  • Transfers from and to Matamata (optional)

What you will not get, compared to other tours, is lunch

The tour I took included a buffet lunch and honestly, it was an amazing experience. It’s such a festive environment and eating lunch in the Shire is so special. But if you’re trying to keep costs down as much as humanly possible on your trip to New Zealand, it might be worth skipping this part of the experience and paying just 65€ to see the Shire.

🧙 Hobbiton Movie Set Tour from Auckland or Rotorua — around 150€

This is the classic Hobbiton experience and the option most visitors choose — including me.

There are several tour companies offering Hobbiton day trips from cities like Auckland and Rotorua. These tours include transportation directly to The Shire’s Rest, so you don’t need to worry about getting yourself to Matamata or arranging any additional transfers.

In practice, it means you simply hop on a bus in the morning and get dropped off right at Hobbiton, where your guided tour begins. This is exactly how I visited, and it made the whole experience completely stress-free.

Most of these guided day tours also include extras like lunch and sometimes additional stops along the way (more on that below), which are not included in the basic entry ticket explained above.

If it’s your first time visiting Hobbiton, this is honestly one of the easiest and most convenient ways to do it. You still get the full Shire experience — just without the logistics or planning.

🚐 Hobbiton Tours with Additional Stops — €200+

Some guided Hobbiton tours include extra stops along the way, which is a great option if you want to see more of the North Island in the same day.

These tours still include everything in a standard guided Hobbiton experience — transportation, entry to the movie set and the full guided walk through the Shire — but they add visits to other popular attractions before or after Hobbiton.

Depending on the tour, these additional stops can be:

These stops vary depending on the tour company and direction of travel, but the idea is the same: instead of only visiting Hobbiton, you turn it into a full-day North Island experience.

If you’re like me and don’t want to drive in New Zealand, these types of tours can offer really good value for money. They’re not the cheapest option, but they make it possible to see a lot in a country where public transportation isn’t always convenient.

If your main focus is only Hobbiton, a direct tour is usually enough. But if you like the idea of turning it into a mini road trip with iconic stops along the way, these combined tours are a really strong option.

🍽️ Second Breakfast Tour —  100€

The Second Breakfast Tour is a morning experience inspired by one of the hobbits’ most famous traditions — food.

This tour takes place earlier in the day, when the set is usually quieter and the light is softer, which makes it a great option if you prefer a more peaceful experience or want better conditions for photography.

It includes:

  • a guided morning tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set
  • access to the Shire and filming locations
  • breakfast served at the Millhouse

But no transfers from Matamata. This means you will need to The Shire’s Rest on your own, where you will check in for your tour and take the bus to the Hobbiton Movie Set.

What makes this experience feel a bit more special is that you actually get to enjoy breakfast inside the Millhouse — a building that isn’t part of the regular standard tour experience in the same way. On most visits, it’s not something you actively experience as part of the itinerary, which is what makes this breakfast stop feel like a more exclusive Shire experience.

✨ Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour — 120€

If you want the most exclusive and unique Shire experience, this is probably it. I didn’t do it myself, but honestly, I kind of regret it — I loved the tour I took, but seeing the Shire lit up at night sounds absolutely incredible, especially combined with an evening banquet at the Green Dragon Inn, which I’m sure doesn’t disappoint.

This has to be the most premium Hobbiton experience, but also the one that feels the most memorable and different from the standard daytime visit.

One important thing to know is that transportation is not included, so you’ll need to get to The Shire’s Rest check-in point on your own.
