Is Milford Sound Overrated? My Honest Review
Before you think I’m crazy for even questioning Milford Sound’s fame, let me say this upfront: Milford Sound is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a visit. But does it really deserve the legendary nickname of the 8th Wonder of the World?
I recently moved to New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa and, to the surprise of most people, ended up exploring a lot of the North Island first. People kept talking to me like I was losing my mind: “What are you still doing in the North Island? You have to go to the South Island and see Milford Sound!”
Now that I’ve seen both islands, I finally understand the hype. The rugged scenery in the South Island of New Zealand is undeniably spectacular. But does its most famous attraction actually deserve all the endless praise it gets? While travel is always a subjective experience, in this blog post, I’m giving you my completely unfiltered and honest opinion about New Zealand’s most famous spot.
The Road to Milford Sound
After so much peer pressure to leave the North Island, life threw me an unexpected twist: I scored a dream job at Onsen in Queenstown and officially moved to the South Island. As soon as I landed in Queenstown and got settled, my first thought was: “I need to go to Milford Sound ASAP.”
I honestly think the first images I ever saw of New Zealand online were Instagram reels of Milford Sound. To me, it was the ultimate definition of unreal, raw beauty. I just couldn’t wait to see it with my own eyes, so I booked this tour just a week after moving to Queenstown and off I went.
I knew the drive would be long, but from what I’d seen and heard, the scenery on the way was supposed to be beautiful. The first part of the journey is mostly rolling hills, farms and sheep—which is honestly so cute and picturesque. But after a few hours on the road, you reach Fiordland National Park. That’s when everything changes.
Is the Drive Actually Better Than Milford Sound Itself?
Let’s get straight to the biggest realization I had on this trip: the drive to Milford Sound was easily the most beautiful part of the entire experience.
From what I had seen online, I knew the road to get there would be gorgeous. But to be honest, it blew away all my expectations. Once you enter the National Park, everything around you feels completely unreal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such impressive mountains anywhere else, and there you are, on a tiny road, feeling very small the whole way.
Isn’t that the definition of a “wow” moment?

I’ve had so many of those moments while traveling, but this drive easily makes it into my top 3, at least. The only problem with having a ridiculously beautiful way to get to Milford Sound is that by the time you actually get there, the destination has a really hard time competing with everything else you’ve seen on the way.
So… in my opinion, yes: the way to Milford Sound is more beautiful and impressive than Milford Sound itself. Don’t cancel me for saying this, but it’s my 100% honest opinion.
Must See Spots on the Milford Road
Because I knew the drive was going to be long, I ended up doing this private tour from Queenstown. Now, let’s be completely real: these private tours are very expensive, and it would be insane to book one and pay all that money for just one person. The only reason I did it is because I was collaborating with Get Your Guide, so I was lucky enough to experience it for free.
However, if you are traveling as a group and ready to pay for comfort, a private tour can be worth considering. If you divide the cost among several people, it becomes a reasonable option if you don’t want to drive the brutal 8-hour return trip yourself, but also desperately want to avoid being crammed onto a massive tour bus with 50 strangers.
The level of flexibility you get is a total game-changer. My driver was absolutely amazing. He knew the road like the back of his hand and stopped at several spots he knew just so I could soak in the views and take loads of pictures. If I saw something beautiful, I could just ask him to pull over.
If you are planning this trip, these are the iconic spots along the Milford Road (State Highway 94) you absolutely have to stop for:
- Mirror Lakes: A quick, 5-minute boardwalk right off the highway. If you get lucky with a perfectly calm, windless morning, the water reflects the mountains like a mirror. An honest reality check: If it’s windy or if ducks are swimming around, it just looks like a regular, slightly murky pond. But it’s still a nice spot to stretch your legs and watch the views!
- The “Glacial Crossroads“: We pulled over at a lookout area with a sign that read “Glacial Crossroads.” The view from here is insane—it perfectly showcases three massive, dramatic mountain peaks right in front of you: Mount Christina, Mount Crosscut, and Mount Lyttle.
- The Turquoise River (The Hollyford River): Further along, we stopped by a rushing river with the most vibrant, intense turquoise water ever. The clear, blue-green glacial water running against the massive mountain backdrop felt like something straight out of a movie.
- Monkey Creek (The Kea Spotting Creek): This was easily one of my favorite stops. It’s a beautiful spot with a small alpine creek surrounded by massive mountains. But the real highlight? The Kea birds. These are the world’s only alpine parrots, and they are incredibly smart and cheeky. We watched them literally trying to “eat” the cars, pecking at the rubber on the windows and windshield wipers of the parked vehicles. The funniest part was that everyone was just standing there, staring at them while they totally destroyed a car. No one tried to stop them—which I completely understand, because they honestly look like they could hurt you if they wanted to!
- The Cleddau Bridge: Right before you finally hit Milford Sound, we stopped at a bridge hanging over a dramatic gorge. Looking down at the sheer power of the water crashing underneath you is really impressive, and it gives you a great taste of how wild and powerful the nature in this region actually is right before you pull into the terminal.
Instagram vs Reality: Where Are All the Waterfalls?
While the mountains and the rivers on the drive were absolutely incredible, there was one major thing you see online that didn’t quite match up with my experience.
If you spend any time researching Milford Sound on social media, you will see captions screaming about “the land of thousands of waterfalls.” The videos show the highway flanked by endless cascades of water crashing down the mountain walls right next to the road. It looks like a mystical paradise and I had been looking forward to seeing it for years.
But unfortunately, it didn’t look like that at all when I went there.
Because it hadn’t rained for a few days before my trip, most of those temporary roadside waterfalls had completely dried up.
Instead of being surrounded by endless roaring curtains of water, we were mostly looking at dry, sheer rock faces. Don’t get me wrong, there were still a couple of streams here and there, and the scale of the mountains is still massive and very impressive. But the landscape definitely loses a lot of that dramatic, overflowing energy you see online.
To be completely honest, I think the whole “thousands of waterfalls” thing is a bit of a marketing stretch anyway. Local guides say that after an absolute torrential downpour, hundreds of temporary streams do light up the cliffs—but if you happen to visit during a dry spell like I did, you’re only going to see a tiny fraction of that.
This was my first real realization of how much the “Milford Sound experience” depends on pure luck with the weather. If you don’t get a massive amount of rain right before your trip, don’t expect to see what they show you on Instagram.
🌧️ The Milford Weather Paradox: Why You Should Actually Pray for Rain
When I first arrived in Queenstown, I was so excited to see Milford Sound that I didn’t give the weather forecast a single thought. Rain or shine, I was determined to go ASAP.
Looking back, that was kind of stupid of me.
Since I moved here on a Working Holiday Visa and plan on living in Queenstown for a while, there was absolutely no reason to rush. Instead of booking a tour immediately, I should have played the long game: wait for a few days of heavy torrential rain, and then book a tour for the exact day after the storm passed.
I know what you’re thinking. “Wow, she got a clear day at Milford Sound and she is still complaining? She is impossible to please!”
But here is the irony: if you go there hoping for pure sunshine, I think you are missing the point. Rain is exactly what makes Milford Sound so magical and famous. That place wouldn’t be the global icon it is without the countless, roaring waterfalls you see on viral Instagram reels. To get those views, you need water. Lots of it.
The ultimate jackpot—the holy grail of Milford trips—is catching a sunny day straight after several days of heavy downpours. That way, you get the blue skies without missing out on the waterfalls. But beggars can’t be choosers. When planning your trip, you should actually be chasing the rain, not the sunshine. If you happen to catch a sunny window right after a downpour, lucky you. If not? Just embrace the damp and enjoy the massive curtains of water that I so frustratingly missed.
People really don’t seem to understand this, which became so clear to me recently at work. I was chatting with a guest at Onsen, and she mentioned she was heading to Milford Sound the next day. She looked so sad and disappointed because the forecast was calling for heavy rain.
I stopped her right there and said, “Are you kidding? Consider yourself incredibly lucky! You are about to see the real Milford Sound with thousands of waterfalls.”
Her face completely lit up. She told me I was the first person to say that to her, and she went from being miserable about the rain to genuinely excited. So take it from a Queenstown local: don’t let a rainy weather forecast ruin your excitement. Pack a good raincoat, forget about the sunshine, and go chase those waterfalls!
🛳️ The Boat Cruise: Deep Into the Fiord
By the time I finally reached Milford Sound, I had already fallen completely in love with Fiordland National Park. Even without those hundreds of waterfalls on the way there, the scenery on the drive was easily some of the most impressive I’ve ever seen in my life.
Naturally, a thought started creeping into my mind: Is this cruise actually going to match what I’ve just seen?
I was obviously looking forward to experiencing this bucket-list destination that I’d been dreaming about for years. But let’s be honest—the more stunning places you travel to, the harder you become to impress. After navigating that jaw-dropping highway, I had a really hard time believing the destination could beat the journey.
But I still gave it a fair chance, obviously. I booked a last-minute ticket with Pure Milford and off I went.
Just a quick heads up: my private road tour didn’t actually include the cruise ticket, so keep a close eye on the inclusions if you are booking the same!
The scenery inside Milford Sound is gorgeous; there’s no denying that. You are surrounded by towering, sheer cliffs that instantly make you feel incredibly small. If you dare to stand up on the top deck, you’ll definitely feel the icy spray of the permanent cascades. The captains love to nose the boats right up under the waterfalls for a classic “glacial facial”.
But the real magic happens when the wildlife decides to show up.
I’m still not sure if I just got insanely lucky or if this is a regular occurrence, but during my 2-hour cruise, I got to see both wild dolphins and some incredibly cute, tiny penguins! At one point, our captain even heard over the radio that another boat had spotted a whale nearby, so we dashed over to check it out. We were out of luck by the time we arrived, but watching dolphins leap out of the water and clumsy little penguins bouncing around the rocks was easily the highlight of the cruise for me.
Yet, as beautiful as it was, and even though I didn’t regret visiting for a single second, one question wouldn’t leave my mind the entire time I was on the boat: “The 8th Wonder of the World? I’m really not so sure.”
To be completely honest, as much as I loved watching the towering mountains meet the open ocean ahead of us, this wasn’t even the most impressive place I’ve seen in New Zealand—let alone the entire world.
Don’t cancel me for saying this, but I really don’t think the Milford Sound deserves the title of the 8th Wonder of the World. Am I the only one with this unpopular opinion? 👀
The Final Verdict: Is Milford Sound Actually Overrated?
So, let’s answer the ultimate question: Is Milford Sound overrated?
In my completely unfiltered opinion: Yes.
For me, if we are talking strictly about the specific destination of Milford Sound itself, it felt a bit overrated compared to the almost mythical hype it receives online. If you go there expecting an untouched, silent paradise with thousands of cascading waterfalls, a dry sunny day and a terminal packed with hundreds of tourists might quickly shatter that Instagram illusion, just like it did for me.
But here is how I look at it: while the tiny area of Milford Sound didn’t quite deserve the title in my eyes, I think Fiordland National Park as a whole is the real 8th Wonder of the World.
To me, the real magic wasn’t just the final boat ride; it was the entire, mind-blowing journey. Driving through those epic valleys, stopping at rushing turquoise rivers, spotting wild Kea parrots at Monkey Creek, and watching wild dolphins leap out of the ocean—that is what made the experience feel legendary to me.
At the end of the day, the cruise itself was a solid 8/10 for me, but the journey to get there was a flawless 10/10. The marketing team for the destination deserves a massive raise, but in my book, the real star of the show is the untamed wildness of Fiordland.
So… Am I Totally Crazy?
Maybe a little bit. But at the end of the day, travel is entirely subjective. There are so many jaw-dropping landscapes in New Zealand, and everyone is going to experience them differently based on the day, the crowds, and—as I learned the hard way—the weather.
Whether you think Milford Sound easily deserves the title of the 8th Wonder of the World, or you end up agreeing with me that the epic highway steals the spotlight, it’s a journey you absolutely have to experience for yourself.
