Hooker Valley Track: One of New Zealand’s Best Easy Hikes
When I decided to move to New Zealand, one of the first things I did was research all the incredible hikes this country has to offer. And wow, there are A LOT of them!
There was just one problem: many of them scared me a little bit.
Don’t get me wrong, I love exploring on foot. I have no problem spending an entire day sightseeing or walking several kilometres just to save money on a taxi. But when it comes to physical challenges? Let’s just say that’s not my cup of tea. I’m not extremely fit, and honestly, I hate pushing myself physically. There, I said it!
The thought of climbing mountains for hours just to reach a viewpoint doesn’t exactly appeal to me. So, if you’re anything like me and want to experience New Zealand’s breathtaking scenery without killing yourself, you’ve come to the right place.
I recently did Hooker Valley Track, and let me tell you: this hike is easy, even by my standards. And trust me, that’s saying a LOT!
In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about Hooker Valley Track, from how difficult it actually is to what you can expect along the way, so you can decide if it’s the right hike for you.

How Difficult Is Hooker Valley Track?
If you’re reading this post, you’re probably wondering the same thing I did when I first heard about this hike: “Is it really that easy?”
And I’m being 100% honest when I say: it really IS as easy as everyone says!
Obviously, you’ll still be walking 10 km, so you’ll probably feel tired by the end. But if you’re worried about struggling to catch your breath or wanting to give up halfway through, don’t be!
I don’t work out at all, and even I found this hike easy. So, if you’re anything like me and want to enjoy New Zealand’s incredible scenery without putting your body through an exhausting physical challenge, Hooker Valley Track is a great option.
A Hike for All Ages
Want to know how easy this hike really is? Well, let’s just say I saw all kinds of people doing it!
From fitness freaks to people carrying a little extra weight, tourists wearing jeans, people using hiking poles, older people, younger people… honestly, even kids!
And that’s one of the things I love most about New Zealand: its natural beauty is so accessible. You don’t have to climb mountains for an entire day or spend a fortune on hiking gear to enjoy some of the country’s most beautiful places — which, by the way, also happen to be some of the most beautiful places in the WORLD!
Is Hooker Valley Track Actually Flat?
One of the first things I read about Hooker Valley Track was that it was really flat. Then, when I started telling friends and colleagues that I was going to do it, everyone kept saying the same thing: “Yes, you really should! It’s so gorgeous, and it’s more like a walk than a hike.”
Being the way I am, I seriously doubted it, though. One thing about me is that I have trust issues, so I honestly thought there had to be a catch. 😂 I just couldn’t imagine how scenery THAT beautiful could be accessible without having to climb a mountain!
But let me tell you: it really is as flat as people say! They weren’t exaggerating.
There are some stairs along the way, and you might need to stop and catch your breath for a moment in those sections. But for vast majority of the hike, you’ll be walking on flat, well-maintained paths.
So, if you’re worried about spending hours walking uphill just to enjoy those incredible views, you can relax. Hooker Valley Track really does make that kind of scenery accessible without a challenging climb!
Is Hooker Valley Track Suitable for Beginner Hikers?
Absolutely! You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy Hooker Valley Track, and I think that’s part of what makes it so special.
If you’ve never really been hiking before, this is a great opportunity to give it a try without immediately throwing yourself into something too challenging. You can enjoy the experience, take your time and figure out whether hiking is something you’d like to do more of.
Just remember that beginner-friendly doesn’t mean effortless. You’ll still be walking for a few hours, so listen to your body, take breaks whenever you need them and enjoy the journey rather than worrying about how quickly you reach the end.
Why I Loved Hooker Valley Track
I had such high expectations for Hooker Valley Track, but somehow, it still managed to blow them all away!
Honestly, pictures and videos don’t do this place justice. I thought I knew what to expect after seeing so many photos online, but nothing prepared me for seeing it with my own eyes.
I mean, I literally walked for around 20 minutes from the car park and found myself in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my entire life. How is that even possible?!
After travelling to so many countries, I’m starting to realise that one of the downsides of travelling a lot is that it becomes harder to be impressed. When you’re constantly discovering incredible places, experiencing different cultures and ticking destinations off your bucket list, things REALLY need to stand out to leave you speechless.
But let me be 100% honest: even after visiting 60 countries and seeing so many places I once dreamed of visiting, Hooker Valley Track still managed to completely blow me away. I still have so much left to explore in New Zealand, but I already have a feeling that this place will be one of the biggest highlights of my time here.
Being surrounded by those enormous mountains makes you feel so small. You hear the powerful sound of avalanches rumbling down the mountains in the distance, turn a corner and suddenly find yourself staring at a glacier… I mean, COME ON. How is a place like this even real?!
Most countries can’t compete with scenery like this, but New Zealand? New Zealand is on another level. There is just SO much natural beauty here that sometimes I genuinely struggle to believe what I’m seeing.
And honestly, since moving here, I’ve found myself getting emotional more than once just because of how beautiful this country is. It’s almost overwhelming in the best possible way. And Hooker Valley Track is the perfect example of that.
Honestly, places like Aoraki/Mount Cook and Hooker Valley Track make me wonder something: how can Milford Sound possibly compete with scenery like this and deserve its famous nickname, the Eighth Wonder of the World?
Don’t get me wrong. Milford Sound is undeniably beautiful. But better than THIS? I’m not so sure! 👀
If you’re curious about my honest opinion, I’ve written a whole post about visiting Milford Sound, where I share my experience and whether I think it lives up to all the hype: Is Milford Sound Overrated? My Honest Review 😏
What to See Along Hooker Valley Track
One of the things I loved most about Hooker Valley Track is that the scenery keeps changing as you walk. You’re not just walking towards one viewpoint and seeing the same thing the whole way. There’s always something new to admire and the views are so incredible that you’ll find yourself stopping every few minutes to take pictures!
Here are some of the highlights you can expect along the way.
🏔️ The Incredible Mountain Views
The mountain views start impressing you even before you reach the starting point of the hike! As you drive closer to Aoraki/Mount Cook, the scenery gets more and more beautiful. I honestly couldn’t stop staring at the mountains around me. I felt like a kid on Chirstmas Eve!
I kept thinking to myself: I cannot believe I’m actually seeing New Zealand’s highest mountain with my own eyes! There’s something so special about finally seeing a place you’ve heard and dreamed so much about in real life.
But here’s a little spoiler: as impressive as those mountain views are at the beginning, you have NO idea how much better the scenery is going to get further along the track! 🤯
💙 Lake Müller Lookout
After around 20 minutes of walking, you’ll reach Lake Müller Lookout, and WOW. The colour of the lake, surrounded by enormous mountains, is absolutely incredible!
I honestly couldn’t believe how beautiful the scenery was, especially considering how little effort it took to get there. That unreal blue water, the dramatic mountain backdrop and the sheer scale of everything around you make this one of those places where you just want to stop and take it all in.
I can’t even describe how grateful I am for seeing these places with my own eyes
And the best part? This is only the beginning! If you’re already amazed by the views here, just wait until you see what’s waiting further along the track. 🤯
Worried about walking 10 km? Don’t be! If that sounds like too much for you, you can simply take the super easy 20-minute walk to this lookout and enjoy these incredible views without committing to the full hike. Nobody says you have to do the whole thing! And that’s the beauty of Hooker Valley Track: you don’t have to walk for hours to experience some of New Zealand’s most breathtaking scenery. The magic starts just minutes from the car park!
🌉 The First Swing Bridge
I gotta admit, my expectations were through the roof after seeing the view from Lake Müller Lookout. I could only think to myself: Can it actually get any better than this?
Spoiler alert: YES, IT CAN!
After leaving the lookout, you’ll walk down a short path towards the first swing bridge, where you’ll get even closer to that gorgeous baby-blue water. Seriously, the colour is unbelievable! I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of seeing water in those shades of blue.
I’ll be honest, though: crossing the bridge can feel a little wobbly, especially when it’s windy. But did that stop me from enjoying the views? Absolutely not! There I was, standing in the middle of the bridge because I just HAD to take more pictures of this place. I mean, can you blame me?
✨ A Little Viewpoint You Shouldn’t Skip
After crossing the first suspension bridge, keep walking for around 10 minutes, and you’ll come across some stairs leading up to a viewpoint. And PLEASE, even if you’re tempted to skip them, don’t! Trust me on this one.
Somehow, this little spot ended up being one of my favourite views of the entire hike. I don’t even know what it was about this place, but it just felt absolutely MAGICAL. ✨ There I was, sitting and eating my protein bar… Staring at that insanely gorgeous view, thinking to myself how lucky I am to live in this beautiful country.
Hands-down the most beautiful snack view ever
🌉 The Second Swing Bridge
Just when you think Hooker Valley Track can’t possibly get any more beautiful, you’ll reach the second swing bridge. And honestly, the views from here are absolutely unreal!
This bridge is particularly impressive, stretching 189 metres across the valley. With the mountains towering around you and the river flowing far below, it’s another one of those moments when you can’t help but stop and look around in complete awe.
By this point, I was already wondering how New Zealand could possibly have so much natural beauty packed into one place. And guess what? There’s still more to come!
Just a little heads-up: this bridge is LONG, and the wind can get pretty strong up there! I definitely felt it swinging a little from side to side as people walked across it. Now, I hope I’m not scaring anyone. It’s definitely not a terrifying experience, but if you’re afraid of heights or feel uncomfortable on moving bridges, it’s worth keeping this in mind so you’re not caught by surprise. Personally, I still think it’s absolutely worth crossing. Just take your time and enjoy the incredible scenery around you!
