Better Than the Maldives? Discover This Hidden Gem in Thailand
If you’ve been dreaming of escaping to a tropical paradise but destinations like Bora Bora or the Maldives are far beyond your budget, you’re in the right place.
As a budget traveler who’s obsessed with crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches, I know how hard it can be to find paradise without the luxury price tag. Most of the dream destinations we see online would drain our savings in a matter of days — and let’s be honest, that’s just not an option (yet!).
That’s why I get genuinely excited when I discover places that feel just like paradise, but are actually affordable. And guess what? I recently found one — and it instantly became my favorite place in the world. No exaggeration.
Koh Lipe — A Tiny Island That Feels Like Heaven on Earth 🏝️
If you’ve never heard of Koh Lipe, this tiny island in Thailand deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list. Nestled in the stunning Andaman Sea, Koh Lipe is Thailand’s southernmost island — so close to Malaysia that it’s often easier to reach from there than from Thailand’s usual tourist hubs.
I actually traveled there from Malaysia (because it’s the easiest way to get to Koh Lipe), and from the moment I arrived, I was completely captivated by its breathtaking beauty and laid-back vibe.
Having visited countless beautiful destinations around the world, few have made me feel as instantly at home as Koh Lipe. It truly is a hidden gem that will steal your heart.

Koh Lipe feels like home to me even though it’s on the other side of the World
This idyllic island in southern Thailand is so small that you can walk across it in just 30 minutes—and it’s famous for having no cars.
While I did spot a few small vehicles during my visit, I can confirm that no regular cars or buses will interrupt your peaceful vacation on Koh Lipe. The island’s traffic mainly consists of motorbike taxis that transport tourists’ luggage between the beaches and hotels.
Arriving on Koh Lipe felt like stepping into a car-free paradise, where getting around is effortless because everything is within walking distance.
For a whole week, I didn’t have to worry about transportation—simply enjoy the island on foot, soaking up the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere.

Are you wondering if Koh Lipe is worth visiting?
Let me explain why it absolutely is — and why I kicked off this post by suggesting it’s better than the Maldives 👇🏼
🌊 Koh Lipe has some of the most stunning turquoise waters I’ve ever seen—even after visiting more than 50 countries
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge fan of paradisiac destinations. Being Portuguese, I’ve grown up surrounded by incredible beaches, so my standards for a dream beach are pretty high.
I’ve been to many hyped-up beach spots that ended up disappointing me, but Koh Lipe was definitely not one of them.
This tiny island in the Andaman Sea felt like a hidden gem — truly a pearl of tropical paradise. Even after traveling extensively across the Caribbean and visiting the Maldives, Koh Lipe remains the most paradisiac place I’ve ever set foot on.
The turquoise water there was honestly beyond anything I had ever seen — like stepping into a real-life Instagram filter.

The water in Koh Lipe is the most turquoise I’ve ever seen
There are a few other places in Thailand that come close to matching the paradise-like beaches of Koh Lipe. The Similan Islands were an absolute dream, with crystal-clear waters and incredible marine life. Koh Kood also stole my heart — the water there is absolutely gorgeous!

Yet, despite the beauty of those places, none of these islands quite compare to the unique magic and stunning turquoise waters of Koh Lipe.
💰 It’s so cheap — Paradise doesn’t have to break the bank
If you think you need to be rich or spend your life’s savings to visit a tropical paradise, think again.
Thailand is famous for being a budget-friendly travel destination where your money goes much further than in many other places. Koh Lipe is not the absolute cheapest spot in Thailand (because island prices tend to be higher), but it remains surprisingly affordable.

During my week-long stay on Koh Lipe, I spent less than 30€ per day. I kept costs low by staying in a hostel for just 10€ a night and avoiding the island’s pricier restaurants. Of course, if you choose luxury accommodations and eat at tourist hotspots, you’ll spend more—but even then, Koh Lipe is still much more affordable than other dream island destinations like the Maldives or Bora Bora.

🌅 The night vibe and the sunsets are amazing
One of the highlights of my trip to Koh Lipe was experiencing the island’s unique night vibe. Since I don’t drink alcohol, busy party spots aren’t really my scene. That’s why this laid-back island felt like the perfect getaway for me.
If you’re looking for bars in Koh Lipe, don’t worry—there are plenty of options! You can find cool bars along the main walking street and even by the beach.
However, in my opinion, the best way to enjoy the nightlife in Koh Lipe is to find a quiet spot on the beach, watch the stunning sunset in Koh Lipe and then head over to the famous fire show at Pattaya Beach, which happens every night.
📢 Pro tip: I recommend staying on the Pattaya Beach side of the island during the evening. While the other side of Koh Lipe boasts incredible beaches worth visiting during the day, it tends to get quite windy at night with high tides in some areas, making it less comfortable after sunset.

The evenings are absolutely magical on Koh Lipe
For travelers seeking a more energetic party vibe in Thailand, islands like Phi Phi might be a better fit. Phi Phi attracts larger crowds and is known for its wild, lively parties that go on until the early hours.
Since that’s not really my style, I truly appreciated the quiet, intimate atmosphere of Koh Lipe. I would highly recommend Koh Lipe to anyone looking for a relaxed getaway in a secluded, peaceful environment away from the busy party scene.
🇹🇭 The Warmth of Thai People and the Culture in Koh Lipe is unforgettable
If you’ve ever visited Thailand, you know how incredibly welcoming and friendly the Thai people are. I honestly can’t think of many other countries where I’ve felt as safe and embraced as I did in Thailand—and that’s 100% thanks to the amazing locals I met throughout the country.
Koh Lipe was no exception. In fact, the people living on this small island seem even friendlier than in other parts of Thailand—maybe because they live in paradise, or because they are somewhat isolated from the world’s troubles. Whatever the reason, the island’s relaxed vibe clearly shines through in its residents.
As you stroll down the main street of Koh Lipe, you’ll encounter charming characters like the famous Madame Yoo Hoo—a super cute lady who owns a restaurant and greets everyone passing by with a cheerful “yoo hoo.”
You’ll also hear a man singing “coconut cake, 10 baht” to attract visitors to his snack stall. And don’t miss the two adorable cats who are always napping on top of a snorkeling tour booth—they might just be the cutest locals on the island!
My stay in Koh Lipe made me fall in love with Thailand
This is everyday life on Koh Lipe, and it’s magical in its simplicity. But sometimes, the island’s spirit truly comes alive, and the rich Thai culture will leave you with unforgettable memories. That happened to me when I unexpectedly stayed an extra day instead of heading to Koh Lanta like initially planned. That very night was the Full Moon Party on Koh Lipe.
Witnessing the islanders gather to release flower arrangements into the sea was my first authentic experience of Thai culture. It was a beautiful moment that made me fall in love with Thailand all over again.
