I love living in Stockholm no matter the season, but Christmas here is extra special. Winters are long and many people retreat indoors to escape the darkness and cold. Even I do sometimes, yet the city’s festive magic is impossible to ignore ✨

No matter how many times I visit, the Stockholm Christmas markets never fail to enchant me. I’ve been to the Gamla Stan Christmas Market countless times since I moved to Stockholm nine years ago, and it never loses its charm. Gamla Stan itself is one of the best free things to see in Stockholm, but it becomes something truly special at Christmas time.

The island is already absolutely stunning with its medieval buildings, narrow alleyways and perfectly preserved streets — but imagine a fairytale Christmas market tucked right into the middle of it.

Red wooden stalls line the square, and the whole setting really does feel like stepping into a tiny medieval village celebrating Christmas. Out of all the times I’ve visited, the most special one was when it suddenly started snowing just as I arrived — the whole market transformed and for a moment it had that perfect storybook Christmas feeling. But I need to be honest: the Gamla Stan market is one of the most famous Christmas markets in Stockholm and that does come with some downsides.

Several times I’ve visited, it’s been very crowded. If you’re hoping for a peaceful wander with barely anyone around, you might be disappointed. But if you’re willing to brave the crowds in exchange for experiencing true Christmas spirit in a genuinely historic setting, I’m sure you’ll love it. There’s nothing like soaking up the festive atmosphere in the middle of Stockholm’s oldest square.

🐑 Skansen Christmas Market

It’s one of those spots you truly cannot miss when visiting Stockholm — especially if you love history or want to learn more about Swedish culture. In many ways, Skansen is like a mini Sweden: it’s an open-air museum made up of real historical houses that were brought from all over the country and rebuilt piece by piece. Walking among them feels like traveling back in time and across Sweden at the same time.

What makes it even more special are the people who work there as actors. They sit inside the houses and eagerly wait for visitors, ready to share stories about how people used to live. They’re dressed in traditional Swedish clothes and their knowledge is absolutely impressive. Even after years of visiting, I can never get enough of wandering through the houses, listening to their stories and discovering little details I missed before.

Skansen’s actors are simply amazing

Skansen is magical any time of year, but during Christmas season it becomes something truly unforgettable. The historic buildings are decorated for the season and the Skansen Christmas Market brings an extra layer of festive charm. Handmade treats, old-fashioned sweets and traditional crafts are set against the backdrop of this living museum, creating an atmosphere that is impossible to replicate anywhere else.

Honestly, it’s one of my favorite Christmas markets in Stockholm, in a very close tie with the one in Gamla Stan. The stalls are incredibly picturesque, there are so many interesting things for sale and the setting — among historic Swedish houses, snow-dusted rooftops and cobblestone streets — is simply beautiful.

Skansen’s Christmas Market is magical every year

But the main advantage Skansen has over Gamla Stan is the crowds: they are much smaller. There are still plenty of people, so the atmosphere feels lively, but you won’t have to fight for space nearly as much. This is partly because the market is spread across a bigger area, and partly because you need to get an entrance ticket to Skansen in order to see the market. So it naturally attracts fewer visitors than the free, extremely popular Gamla Stan market.

What makes this market special is its focus on quality over quantity. The stalls feature carefully selected Swedish designers, artisans and food producers. You’ll find beautifully made gifts here: ceramics, jewelry, textiles, leather goods and gourmet food items that feel perfect for Christmas presents.

Kungsträdgården Christmas Market is a one-day-only event and Sweden’s largest Christmas market, making it a unique stop if you happen to be in the city that day. Located right in central Stockholm, it’s convenient for those short on time or already sightseeing nearby.

I have to be honest: it’s not the coziest market. If you’re looking for charming, picturesque Christmas vibes, Stockholm has other markets that do that much better. That said, it’s a great market to support locals — many of the stalls are run by Stockholm students selling handmade items and treats, giving it a lively, youthful energy.

Kungsträdgården’s Christmas Market isn’t the best in Stockholm but you’ll get to see locals there

One of the highlights is the ice skating rink, which adds to the festive atmosphere and makes it a fun stop if you’re traveling with kids or want to fully embrace a Swedish winter. While it may lack the cozy, storybook feel of Gamla Stan or Skansen, Kungsträdgården itself is worth visiting during this season for its beautiful holiday illuminations, which brighten up the city center and create a festive, magical vibe. Combined with its bustling, modern Christmas energy and local flavor, it’s still a stop worth making if you’re in Stockholm at the right time.

After living here for nine years, I still get a little emotional the moment the first lights go up in Gamla Stan and the smell of glögg drifts out of cafés. The city transforms — not in an over-the-top way, but in that classic Scandinavian style: cozy, elegant and timeless.

Whether you’re visiting Stockholm for the first time or returning for another round of Nordic holiday charm, here is my personal, tried-and-true guide to the top things to do in Stockholm at Christmas 2025.

Why Stockholm at Christmas Is So Special

But is it still worth visiting Stockholm for its Christmas markets?
I’d say yes—with one caveat. If you’re planning a trip solely for the markets, you might find them a bit modest. However, Stockholm during Christmas is so much more than just the markets. The city itself transforms into a cozy winter wonderland, and the markets become charming complements to everything else happening in December.

What Stockholm’s Christmas Markets lack in scale, they usually make up for in atmosphere: intimate stalls, friendly vendors, Swedish holiday treats and a scandinavian vibe that’s hard to resist. When combined with the city’s beautiful Christmas lights, traditional celebrations, festive window displays and seasonal events, the markets help create a perfectly magical winter trip to Sweden’s capital.

In other words: the markets alone probably won’t blow you away—but as part of the whole Stockholm Christmas experience, they’re absolutely worth visiting.

🕯️ 2. Join One of Sweden’s Most Beautiful Traditions: Santa Lucia

December 13 marks one of Sweden’s most enchanting celebrations: Lucia Day. But for me, it has become so much more than just another tradition. After living in Stockholm for nine years and experiencing countless Swedish holidays, Lucia has become my absolute favorite celebration—nothing else even comes close.

Life in Scandinavia isn’t easy, especially in winter. The cold settles in early, the days grow painfully short and darkness becomes a constant companion. People retreat indoors, the city gets quieter and sometimes it feels like the sun has forgotten about us entirely.

It’s during this time—right at the darkest point of the year—that something almost magical happens. A young girl dressed in white appears, wearing a glowing crown of candles, walking slowly and serenely, followed by a choir carrying lights and singing traditional songs.

Santa Lucia celebrations are such a big deal in Sweden

Santa Lucia arrives literally bearing light, and I’m not exaggerating when I say she feels like a saviour. I’ve watched some of the coldest, most reserved Swedes quietly wipe away tears during Lucia performances. And after living here for nearly a decade, I understand exactly why. It’s not just beautiful—it’s deeply emotional. It’s a reminder that even in the heaviest darkness, warmth and light still return.

In Stockholm, you can experience this at places like Storkyrkan in Gamla Stan, at Skansen’s famously atmospheric celebration, or in countless churches and concert halls across the city. But no matter where you see it, Lucia is a huge deal. It’s gentle, calming and incredibly moving.

TIP: Make sure you book tickets for Lucia concerts WAY ahead! I’ve been struggling for years to get tickets with a good visibility at Storkyrkan — and I finally managed this year 🎉

One of the simplest but most magical things to do in Stockholm at Christmas is to stroll through the city and admire the Christmas lights. More than 40 streets, squares and bridges light up each year. Every winter the installations become a little more creative, a little more whimsical and a little more photogenic.

What makes the lights in Stockholm so special isn’t their size or flashiness (this isn’t London or New York), but their warmth. They’re elegant, cozy and designed with the same Scandinavian touch for beauty and atmosphere you see in Swedish homes. When the sun sets around 14:30, these lights feel less like decoration and more like a lifeline—little pockets of brightness guiding you through the city.

A true Stockholm Christmas tradition is gathering outside the NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) department store to see its beautifully crafted holiday window displays. Every year in late November, NK unveils a brand-new theme—complete with moving figures, miniature landscapes and tiny handcrafted details that people of all ages stop to admire. It’s one of those moments where the city collectively pauses, leans in closer to the glass and lets itself feel a bit like a child again.

And here’s the thing:
Stockholmers don’t usually show their emotions openly, but the NK windows have a way of softening even the most stoic locals. Families bundle up and come to see them together. Kids point out every moving piece. Adults smile without even realizing it. It’s nostalgic, festive and somehow always surprising, even if you’ve lived here for years like me.

There is a new theme chosen for NK’s Christmas windows every year

Stepping inside NK is just as magical as admiring its windows. The entire department store is transformed for the season, with twinkling lights, garlands and one of the largest indoor Christmas trees in Stockholm towering in the central hall.

On weekends, you’ll often hear live Christmas concerts echoing through the building—choirs, musicians and festive performances that make shopping feel like stepping into a holiday movie. And if you’re visiting with kids (or you’re a grown-up who still loves some Christmas magic), you can even meet Santa inside the store. It’s cozy, cheerful and a perfect stop to warm up between outdoor activities.

⭐ 5. Visit a Free Gingerbread House Exhibition

One of the most charming—and deliciously scented—Christmas traditions in Stockholm is the annual Gigerbread House Exhibition. Every year, this popular exhibition is hosted at ArkDes, Sweden’s national center for architecture and design. The best part? It’s completely free, making it one of the best free things to do in Stockholm in December.

This isn’t your ordinary gingerbread display. Every year, architects, designers, artists, bakers, kids and hobby creators from all over Sweden submit their gingerbread masterpieces. The exhibition usually runs from late November until the beginning of January, making it an ideal stop during your Stockholm Christmas trip. If you’re looking for something festive, unique and sweet (literally!), the gingerbread house exhibition is absolutely worth adding to your Stockholm itinerary.

She absolutely loved it and managed to fit in more than I thought possible in just a couple of days.

❄️ Some boat tours don’t operate during winter, so the pass offers less value in the off-season.
🎟️ Some attractions require advance reservations, even if you hold the pass — always double-check in the Go City app.
🎵 ABBA The Museum — this is undoubtedly one of the best museums to visit in Stockholm. However, it is not included in the Stockholm City Pass. If you want to visit it, be sure to plan and budget for a separate ticket.

3‑Day Pass: SEK 1,568 (~ €143)
4‑Day Pass: SEK 1,765 (~ €161)
5‑Day Pass: SEK 1,912 (~ €174)

Note: Prices can vary slightly depending on where you buy the pass. After checking multiple sites, I found the cheapest prices on GetYourGuide (even when compared to the official website). So it’s worth comparing before you purchase — the official Go City site, GetYourGuide or Klook may all list different rates.

🤔 Is the Stockholm City Pass Worth It?

Here’s the honest truth: it depends on how you travel.

✅ It’s definitely worth it if:

You’re buying a pass for 3 days or more — 💡 While 1 or 2‑day passes could be worth it if you’re really rushing, the price difference to a 3‑day pass is small — making 3 days or more much better value and far less rushed.
You plan to visit 3 or more major attractions per day — such as Skansen, the Vasa Museum and the Royal Palace
You’re visiting during spring or summer when all tours are open
You enjoy sightseeing and want to see as much as possible
You value convenience — one digital ticket for everything

🚫 It’s not worth it if:

You prefer a relaxed pace and only want to see 1 or 2 paid attractions
You’re visiting in winter when some activities are closed
You’re traveling with small children (many attractions are free or discounted for kids)
You mostly want to walk around neighborhoods and want to focus on free things to see and do

💸 Real Examples: Do You Actually Save Money?

Let’s break down the numbers so you can see the savings clearly. Seeing the real prices side-by-side is the best way to figure out whether the pass is actually worth it for your style of travel.

1-Day Pass (SEK 882 / ~€80)

Let’s say you only have one full day in Stockholm and plan to visit:

Vasa Museum: SEK 190
Skansen: SEK 245
Royal Palace: SEK 180

Total if paid individually: SEK 990 (~€89)

✅ In this example, you would save about 9€ with the 1-day pass, so it might be worth it. But you’re gonna have to rush and you won’t be able to save much more, unless you cram in even more attractions.

With a three‑day pass you could realistically visit:

🧭 My Local Verdict: Is the Stockholm City Pass Worth It in 2025?

Here’s my honest opinion as someone who’s lived here for nearly a decade and helped many friends plan their visits:

⭐ The Stockholm City Pass is worth it for most first-time visitors — but only if you get the 3-day pass or longer

Why?

The price jump from 1 or 2 days to 3 days is small, but you get much more time to spread out the attractions
You don’t need to rush — you can comfortably visit 2–3 major sights per day and still make the pass worth it
Many of the best-value experiences (like Drottningholm or Birka) take half a day, which makes shorter passes harder to maximize
With 3 days, you’re more likely to visit several museums, take boat tours and visit the palaces — which increases your total savings
It gives you flexibility for weather changes (important because it’s Sweden)

🚫 If you prefer a slower pace, aren’t big on museums or are visiting in winter when tours are limited, the pass is probably not worth it. In these cases, it’s better to buy tickets individually.

But while it’s true that Sweden’s capital has quite high living costs, there are so many things you can see and do for free. Whether you’re into architecture, photography, nature walks or local culture, Stockholm offers plenty of experiences that don’t cost a single krona.

When people ask me where to find the best view of Stockholm, Skeppsholmsbron is one of the first places that comes to mind. This bridge that connects the city center with the small island of Skeppsholmen. It might not be the biggest bridge in Stockholm, but to me, it’s definitely the most beautiful.

It’s the kind of spot that makes you stop and just breathe it all in — especially at sunset, when the light hits the pastel facades across the water.

Two of Stockholm’s most important landmarks — the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) and the Royal Palace — are within walking distance of each other in Gamla Stan. But even if you don’t plan to spend any money, Djurgården itself is absolutely worth visiting. The island is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in the city, full of nature, waterfront views and charming cafés. Just wandering around here feels like stepping into the countryside — all while still being in the heart of Stockholm.

Locals go there to jog, picnic or simply escape the city noise. Take a walk along the Djurgårdsbrunn Canal, where the water sparkles under the trees, or stop by Rosendals Trädgård, a beautiful organic garden and café.

Here, you can try Sweden’s national dish in its most authentic form, along with some truly unique versions made from moose, elk and even bear 🐻

From there, head toward the edges of the island, where cliffs and leafy parks open up to breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline — especially around sunset. That’s why Södermalm is such a favorite among locals. It even has Stockholm’s best viewpoint — keep reading to find out its exact location!

9. Get the Best View of Stockholm from Monteliusvägen

If you only have time for one viewpoint in Stockholm, make it Monteliusvägen. This narrow walking path runs along the northern edge of Södermalm and offers jaw-dropping views of Lake Mälaren, City Hall and the spires of Gamla Stan.

If you haven’t fallen in love with Stockholm yet, I can guarantee you that you will when you see the city’s skyline from this amazing viewpoint.

For me, it’s such a special place — I keep finding myself here whenever I’m wandering the city without a plan. It’s the place where I saw the Northern Lights for the first time (yes, it’s possible in Stockholm!), where I’ve admired the city’s skyline on endless summer nights, when complete darkness doesn’t exist in Sweden. It’s even a place where I stood in complete silence during an ice-cold winter morning, admiring a completely frozen Lake Mälaren.

Monteliusvägen is especially magical during golden hour, when the city glows in warm light and the water reflects every shade of pink and gold. Bring a takeaway coffee or a small picnic — locals often come here to unwind after work.

10. Visit the Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. While the guided tours and tower visits require a ticket, the courtyard and waterfront area are open to the public for free — and both are absolutely worth a visit.

When you pass through the wooden doorway into the courtyard, you’ll instantly see why it’s one of the best places to visit in Stockholm. The red-brick walls are so majestic, and there’s almost a Harry Potter vibe to the whole place — am I the only one seeing it?

This spot is so worth a visit all year round, but especially in autumn, when red and orange leaves cover the walls, turning it into one of the best places to enjoy Stockholm’s autumn colors.

Even though the courtyard is truly impressive, don’t miss the rest of what Stockholm’s City Hall has to offer. There’s a waterfront park called Stadshusparken and it’s completely free to visit. It’s actually one of my favorite spots in the city.

As you probably know by now, my ultimate favorite view of Stockholm is from Monteliusvägen — that one has no competitors. But the view of the city skyline from City Hall’s park is still one of the best in all of Stockholm.

11. See the Island of Riddarholmen During Golden Hour

That amazing view you get from the City Hall is the iconic island of Riddarholmen. Connected to Gamla Stan by a short bridge, this small island feels like a secret corner of the city. It’s home to several grand 17th-century palaces and to Riddarholmen Church, where many Swedish monarchs are buried.

But the real magic happens at sunset. The western promenade of Riddarholmen offers unobstructed views of Lake Mälaren, with boats drifting by and the light dancing on the water. It’s one of my personal favorite photography spots in Stockholm — especially in summer, when the golden light lingers for hours.

12. Take a Walk Along Norr Mälarstrand

For a taste of local life, join Stockholmers on their favorite waterfront walk: Norr Mälarstrand. This promenade stretches along Kungsholmen Island, lined with art deco apartment buildings, leafy trees and cafés that come alive in summer.

Locals jog, bike and walk their dogs here, while boats sway gently in the marina. Grab an ice cream or coffee and just stroll — it’s one of the best ways to experience everyday life in the city.

If you keep walking west, you’ll eventually reach Rålambshovsparken, a large park perfect for picnics or swimming in Lake Mälaren.

13. Join Europe’s Largest Outdoor Cinema

Speaking of Rålambshovsparken, that’s where one of my favorite events in Stockholm happens every summer — Europe’s largest outdoor cinema.

I love life in Stockholm pretty much no matter the season — even though November is a bit dull — but never as much as when it’s time for this festival. I can’t even describe the vibe: it’s like the whole city gathers in one park to enjoy the last days of warm weather before the colder season returns.

My friends and I have been to this event so many times, but I never get tired of it. I can even remember moments when I got emotional — especially when people spontaneously started dancing at the end of Dirty Dancing. To this day, it’s one of my most treasured memories of living in Stockholm.

If you’re planning to visit Stockholm in summer and can be flexible with your dates, make sure to check when the outdoor cinema takes place! It’s usually in mid-August, though the exact dates are released a few months in advance.

14. Get Free Entrance to Stockholm’s Museums During Kulturnatt

Between Stockholm’s Outdoor Cinema and Kulturnatt, I honestly have a REALLY hard time choosing a favorite. Every single year, I’m eagerly waiting for Culture Night to come. It always happens in April, right when the weather starts warming up. Some years, it’s even the very first night I can wear a lighter jacket after winter, which is a huge deal in Sweden.

Kulturnatt is a celebration of everything Stockholm has to offer — art, music, performances and most importantly, free access to many of the city’s museums and cultural spots.

For locals, it’s such a big deal because it marks the end of winter. It brings so many people and life back to the streets of Stockholm — a welcome change after the long winter months.

For visitors, it’s all of that plus a big saving opportunity.

If you add up the price of a Skansen ticket, the expensive Vasa Museum entrance, a ticket to the ABBA Museum… it easily adds up to a significant expense — all of which can be avoided if you plan your trip to coincide with Kulturnatt. The date for 2026 is already set: it will happen on April 18th.

Honestly, if you plan your trip around this event, I guarantee you won’t regret it. It will save you money and it’s an experience you’ll never forget. Even after living here for 9 years, I still love wandering between the exhibitions, discovering hidden gems and soaking up the lively energy as if it were the first time. Year after year, it’s such a magical experience.

15. Take Free Boat Rides to Stockholm’s Archipelago

Stockholm is a beautiful city, and exploring the city center is amazing — but one of the best experiences you can have here is venturing out to the archipelago. I have no idea why, but Stockholm’s archipelago is still such a hidden gem.

Going to the islands during the summer high season is many people’s favorite activity, but unfortunately, you can’t get free rides then. However, if you’re in Stockholm during the low season (between September and April), you can take advantage of one of my favorite hacks for traveling cheaply around here.

Just a heads-up: this won’t be very relevant if you’re visiting Stockholm for only a few days. But if you’re staying for a while, or even better, living here like me, this is a tip you need to know! 💰

Here’s the trick: if you have a monthly SL card for Stockholm’s public transportation, it actually gives you access to the whole archipelago during the low season. That’s because SL collaborates with Waxholmsbolaget, one of the main boat companies connecting Stockholm to the archipelago. So people with a monthly pass get free rides on Waxholmsbolaget. Which means you can explore the archipelago without spending extra money!

For me, gliding through the quiet islands during the off-season is magical. The boats are less crowded, the scenery is peaceful and you get a completely different perspective of Stockholm. In fact, a perspective that most tourists never get to see!

As someone who calls this city home, I think autumn is one of the most magical times to experience it — peaceful, colorful and full of small pleasures. From quiet strolls beneath fiery leaves to boat rides through the archipelago, here are my favorite ways to enjoy Stockholm in the fall, the local way.

🍁 1. See the Red Foliage at Stadshuset

Even after living in Stockholm for nine years, the City Hall (Stadshuset) is still one of my absolute favorite spots in the city. This iconic building makes such a majestic statement on Stockholm’s skyline, and it’s a must-visit if you’re coming here.

If you’re planning a trip during autumn, you’re arriving at one of the best times to see it. That’s when the deep red ivy climbs the enormous brick walls, making the whole building feel even more magical.

But Stadshuset isn’t just great for autumn colors — it also offers one of the best views in Stockholm. Sitting right by the water, it gives you a privileged perspective of the city’s beauty. My favorite way to enjoy it? Pack a small picnic, find a quiet spot by the waterfront and just take in the peaceful, golden light.

Östermalm is one of Stockholm’s most elegant neighborhoods, and autumn is the perfect time to explore its streets. Even after years living here, I still love wandering around its beautiful boulevards and quiet side streets lined with classic architecture and charming details.

If Stockholm had a “fancy pants” district, Östermalm would definitely wear the crown — think chic shops, stylish cafés and those perfectly polished sidewalks. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a millionaire to enjoy its golden autumn glow!

This area feels both upscale and welcoming, with leafy doorways that take on a beautiful golden hue in the fall. It’s a great way to experience Stockholm’s sophisticated side without the crowds you find downtown.

Even though Danderydsgatan is one of Stockholm’s most beautiful streets, I’ve never seen tourists there in all the times I’ve walked it. This quiet, charming residential street is a photographer’s dream and absolutely one of Stockholm’s most Instagrammable spots — yet it remains a hidden gem.

I’ve passed by countless times, even when it wasn’t on my way anywhere, simply because the street feels so cozy and full of character. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak in the calm, everyday beauty of the city.

🏠 4. Wander Through the Enchanting Streets of Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is where I first fell completely in love with the city when I moved here nine years ago. I still clearly remember my very first stroll through its medieval cobblestone streets, thinking, “How did I get so lucky to live here?”

It’s one of the best museums to visit in Stockholm and it should definitely be on your itinerary — especially if you want to experience Swedish history, culture and traditions up close.

☕ 8. Take a Cozy Fika: Savor Autumn Flavors in Stockholm

No autumn day in Stockholm is complete without a proper fika — a Swedish tradition of enjoying coffee, pastries, and a moment to slow down. Fika isn’t just a treat; it’s a huge part of Swedish culture and social life. A cherished daily ritual where friends, families and colleagues pause to connect, relax and savor the simple joys of life.

After wandering the golden paths of Rosendals Trädgård or strolling through Djurgården’s leafy streets, stepping into a cozy café feels like the perfect seasonal reward.

One of the coziest cafés I’ve ever had fika at is Café Petissan, tucked inside Skansen. Surrounded by charming historic buildings and the soft rustle of autumn leaves, it’s a spot that perfectly captures the warmth and charm of the season. Sipping a hot cup of coffee while eating a freshly baked pastry there feels like a small slice of Stockholm magic.

Stockholm is full of other charming cafés as well, from hidden gems tucked away in Östermalm to quaint spots in Gamla Stan. Autumn is the perfect time to try seasonal treats like cinnamon buns, pumpkin pastries or warm apple pies.

Many cafés offer seating by the window, so you can watch the amber leaves fall outside as you sip and relax.

If you’re like me—a bit of a museum nerd—you’ll find out that Stockholm’s museums offer so much more than just exhibits. They are gateways to stories, traditions and everyday life from Sweden’s past. And among all of them, there’s one that stands out as truly extraordinary: Skansen.

What Is Skansen?

Skansen was founded in 1891 and was the first museum of its kind in the world.

Its mission? To preserve and showcase traditional Swedish life. That’s why almost 200 historic buildings were relocated there from every corner of Sweden. From rural farmhouses and town shops to a medieval church, a pharmacy, a post office and even a school, Skansen offers a walk through centuries of Swedish culture, architecture and daily life.

🏠 Explore Historic Buildings

TOWN QUARTER: this is one of my favorite parts of Skansen! A charming cobblestone area that recreates life in a 19th-century Swedish town. Here, you’ll find historic buildings like the bookbinder’s workshop, an old bakery, a pharmacy, a woodcarver’s studio, and more — each offering a glimpse into the crafts and daily life of the time. Not all buildings are open at all times, but keep an eye out for signs that say “Öppet” (Open). Step inside wherever you can — many houses have staff dressed in traditional clothes who are happy to share stories and demonstrate old skills. It’s one of the most immersive and atmospheric parts of Skansen.

THE FARMSTEADS: one of the most fascinating things to see at Skansen is its collection of authentic Swedish farmsteads, each transported from different regions of the country and carefully rebuilt. These historic buildings show how families lived and worked in rural Sweden centuries ago. A highlight is Moragården, a farmstead from Dalarna with buildings dating as far back as the 1300s — including the oldest structure in all of Skansen. You’ll also find Älvrosgården, a timber farmhouse from Härjedalen in the north; and Skånegården, a grand southern Swedish farm with whitewashed walls and thatched roofs. These traditional homes are part of what makes Skansen one of the best places to experience Swedish History in Stockholm. If you see a door marked “open”, don’t hesitate — step inside and discover how people lived centuries ago.

KOLONI CABINS: These colorful little houses are one of the coziest and most charming parts of Skansen. Koloni houses are a long-standing Swedish tradition — small summer cottages where people escape city life to enjoy nature, sunshine and gardening. After months of winter, Swedes cherish these green spaces as a place to relax, grow flowers and vegetables, and soak up every bit of summer light. At Skansen, you can stroll through a beautiful row of koloni houses, often in full bloom during the summer months. The gardens are lovingly maintained, and if you’re lucky, you’ll meet one of Skansen’s costumed interpreters, ready to share stories about the history of these cabins and the people who once tended them.

UPPER CLASS HOMES: Skansen doesn’t just showcase rural life — it also features beautiful upper-class homes that reflect how Sweden’s wealthier families lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most impressive of them all is Skogaholms Herrgård. This elegant 18th-century manor house, originally from Södermanland, was moved to Skansen in the 1930s and beautifully preserved to showcase the lifestyle of Sweden’s upper class in the 1700s. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and painted in classic Swedish red, the manor’s exterior is impressive on its own — but step inside (when open) and you’ll find lavishly decorated interiors, complete with painted ceilings, antique furniture and rooms that once hosted refined dinners and social gatherings.

SEGLORA CHURCH: One of the most striking buildings at Skansen is the Seglora Church, a charming red wooden church originally built around 1729 in the village of Seglora, located in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. It was carefully relocated to Skansen in 1916. With its simple yet elegant design, candlelit interior and hand-painted decor, the church offers a peaceful atmosphere that feels truly timeless. It is still used today for weddings and concerts, so you might even catch a live performance or hear the organ’s melodies echoing through the walls. Step inside to admire the detailed woodwork and experience a quiet moment in a building that has stood for nearly 300 years.

These are just a few of the many historic buildings you can explore at Skansen. You’ll also find a school, a people’s house, a really cozy post office that is rarely open, and much more. Sweden is home to beautifully rich traditions that have fascinated me ever since I moved here in 2016.

While you can experience these cultural celebrations throughout the country, the best place to immerse yourself in them in Stockholm is undoubtedly Skansen. If you visit during the summer, you’ll have the chance to celebrate Midsummer alongside the locals — a magical event filled with flowers, dancing, and joy. Another great option is celebrating Midsummer in Vaxholm.

During autumn, don’t miss Skansen’s vibrant Autumn Market and a variety of seasonal events celebrating the beauty and traditions of the fall season.

In the winter months, Skansen hosts a famous Christmas Market and the enchanting Lucia concerts, which remains my absolute favorite Swedish tradition.

🐍 Visit the Skansen Aquarium (Separate Ticket Required)

Tucked inside the main Skansen grounds, the Skansen Aquarium is a hidden gem that many visitors overlook — but it’s well worth a visit, especially if you’re traveling with kids or love animals. This small but fascinating indoor space features everything from exotic fish and reptiles to monkeys, lemurs, spiders and even crocodiles.

One of the highlights is the walk-through lemur enclosure, where the animals roam freely just a few feet away. It’s interactive, educational and a fun contrast to the outdoor museum experience.

👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes
Skansen is huge and you’ll be doing a lot of walking — often on cobblestones or uneven paths. Comfortable shoes are a must if you want to enjoy your day without sore feet.

🧥 Bring a Light Jacket
Swedish weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. It’s always smart to bring a light jacket or an extra layer, just in case the temperature drops or a breeze picks up.

⏳ How Long Does It Take to Visit Skansen?
You can easily spend 4–6 hours at Skansen — or even a full day if you want to explore all the historic buildings, visit the zoo and enjoy a fika or picnic. If you’re short on time, you can still see the highlights in 2–3 hours, but Skansen is best enjoyed at a slower pace.

Skansen is truly one of my favorite places in the world — and without a doubt one of the best museums to visit in Stockholm. It offers a rare and unforgettable mix of history, culture, nature and tradition, all brought to life in the most beautiful setting. While the entrance fee isn’t the cheapest, the 25€ ticket is absolutely worth it for everything you get to see, learn and experience inside this iconic open-air museum. If you’re planning a trip to Sweden, venturing this far north is one of the most unforgettable experiences the country offers. While Sweden is filled with stunning landscapes, nothing compares to witnessing the raw and untouched beauty of the Arctic with your own eyes.

The region is so remote and sparsely populated that it can be difficult to find a good base for exploring — but Abisko is the perfect gateway to Arctic Sweden.

Whenever I talk to people planning a trip to Sweden, I always recommend heading to the northern of the country. It’s one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve ever had!

While the photos of the Arctic landscapes are breathtaking and people are curious about exploring the region, many are hesitant to venture that far north.

I get it — visiting the Arctic might sound like a big challenge. But if you’re feeling unsure, Abisko is the perfect place to start. Despite being located in remote Northern Sweden, it’s surprisingly well-connected and easy to reach.

If you love scenic journeys or are a fan of night trains, you can take a direct train from Stockholm to Abisko. It’s one of the most stunning train rides I’ve ever experienced — and the journey itself is a big part of the adventure!

If you would rather get there faster, there are direct flights to Kiruna: a city that is located about 90 kms away from Abisko. Take some days to explore that unique city and visit the famous Ice Hotel that is located close by.

💚 It’s one of the best places in the World to see the Northern Lights

There are many great places in Sweden to see the Northern Lights and sometimes you can even see them in Stockholm or in the south of the country. But if you wanna make sure you see a great Aurora show, you should go to Abisko.

Abisko is such a good place to see the Northern Lights because it has a special microclimate that keeps the skies almost always clear. Besides that, it’s so isolated that there is almost no light pollution there.

Those are the main conditions to see the Northern Lights, so Abisko is considered the best place to see them in Sweden. Some even say it’s one of the best places in the whole World to see Aurora Borealis.

If you want to have that bucket list experience in Abisko, make sure you visit during the Aurora season: from September to early April.

☀️ You can see the Midnight Sun if you visit Abisko during summer

I’ve visited Abisko only once so far and it was during summer. My goal was to see the Midnight Sun and I had such high expectations for that experience. But it turned out to be even better than I imagined!

What is the Midnight Sun?

In addition to the magical Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun is another extraordinary natural phenomenon that occurs every year above the Arctic Circle. It happens during the summer months, when the sun doesn’t set at all — meaning you can actually see the sun shining at midnight.

It’s one of the most surreal and unforgettable experiences you can have in Arctic Sweden.

When can you see the Midnight Sun?

Above the Arctic Circle, every location experiences at least one full day each year when the sun never sets — a natural wonder known as the Midnight Sun. The further north you go, the longer this period of continuous daylight lasts.

That means that the exact dates of the Midnight Sun depend on your location within the Arctic region.

Abisko, located more than 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden, experiences nearly two full months of Midnight Sun — typically from May 25th to July 17th.

🏔️ The views are amazing and there is an easy way to see them from above

If you want to experience the amazing Arctic landscapes of Northern Sweden without having to go through long hikes, Abisko is also the perfect place for you.

Really close to the few hotels you have to choose from in Abisko, you can find an easy way to enjoy the views from up high: the Aurora Sky Station.

To get up there, simply take the chairlift up to Mount Nuolja. In about 20 minutes, you will be 900 meters above sea level and enjoying the unique Arctic views of that region. Up at the Aurora Sky Station, you can start hiking trails as well or simply relax with a swedish fika at their cafe.

You can take the chairlift to go up to the Aurora Sky Station both in winter to see the Northern Lights and in summer to experience the Midnight Sun. Both are such unforgettable experiences to have in the Arctic!

Riding Sweden’s Polar Express: A Magical Train Journey from Stockholm to Abisko

That’s the unique journey I’m gonna take you on today and I hope it becomes a part of your travel wishlist by the end of this blog post!

The Polar Express, from Stockholm to the Arctic

I lived in Sweden for more than 7 years and experienced so much in that beautiful country. But nothing came even close to the unforgettable train ride I took to the Arctic.

This magical train ride has gotten the nickname of Polar Express and that’s a perfect name for it.

It will take you all the way from Stockholm’s city center to the wilderness of Northern Sweden in what is one of the longest and most beautiful train journeys in Europe.

Stockholm is such a gorgeous city and there is so much to see and do, so I hope you take some days to explore it before this adventure begins.

Best things to do in Stockholm 📍

When you’ve explored the best things that the Swedish capital has to offer, head to Stockholm’s Central Station: that’s the place where your Arctic adventure will begin.

Stockholm’s main train station is an attraction in itself.

It dates back to the 19th century and it’s so majestic both inside and out. Trains depart from there to all corners of Sweden, Norway and even Denmark! But I dare say that the train you will take is headed to the most special destination on the departure board.

After you bought your Polar Express tickets, it’s time to board your train and get ready for one of the most special train rides of your life.

The SJ train that will take you to Abisko in Northern Sweden is actually headed all the way to Narvik, in Norway. You can choose to go to the end destination and explore Sweden’s gorgeous neighbor but, if you wanna take my advice, hop off the train in Abisko this time. That way, you’ll get to explore one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

Here is what you need to know about the SJ Train to Abisko:

🥪 You can bring your own snacks but there is a bistro on the train, so there are some basic food options onboard

🌙 It‘s a night train: this train takes 17 hours to complete the journey from Stockholm to Abisko in Northern Sweden, so you will depart in the afternoon and arrive on the day after.

💤 Luckily, there are several different options (for all budgets) to sleep on the train:

💲 The absolute cheapest option is of course to sit all the way. It‘s not the most comfortable option but you gotta do what you gotta do when you‘re on a tight budget!

🛤️ The train ride

Once you’re all set with your train tickets and you’re on the way North, it’s time to enjoy this beautiful train ride!

The landscape you will get to experience is completely different depending on the season. During winter, you’ll see a white winter wonderland; during summer, you’ll see endless sunsets. Those huge differences are due to the location of this train route.

Since it‘s heading to the North of Sweden, the Polar Express actually crosses the Arctic Circle and continues traveling across the region of Sweden that is located above it.

Are you wondering how you will know when you crossed the Arctic Circle?

I was so surprised by this when I took this train. There is actually an announcement onboard telling all passangers that we‘re crossing it! You can even see small blue signs marking the exact place where the Arctic Circle is located. Isn‘t that super cool?

Besides that bucket list moment of crossing the Arctic Circle, this train ride is filled with some of the most beautiful scandinavian views I‘ve ever seen. It made me fall in love with Sweden even more.

The lakes, the Nature, the picturesque wooden train stations and all the wildlife you will see are some of the most special travel experiences you can have in Scandinavia.

📍 Abisko

Like I mentioned above, you can take this train from Stockholm all the way to Narvik, in Norway. It’s a popular destination to visit in Northern Norway and I’m sure that it’s such a special experience to take the Polar Express all the way there.

But if you want to visit one of the best places in the World to see the Northern Lights and one of the most beautiful places to see the Midnight Sun, hop off the train at Abisko Turiststation.

That was my final destination on this train ride and during the few days I spent in Abisko, I fell completely in love with Lappland as I’m sure you will too.

I booked my trip with the Polar Express to fulfill a bucket list experience I had been dreaming about for a long time. Ever since I learned that the sun never sets for months in certain places in the World, I knew I had to experience that. Lappland is one of those places, so I knew this adventure had to happen!

You can have that once-in-a-lifetime experience anywhere above the Arctic Cicle, but Abisko is one of the best places in Sweden to see the midnight sun.

It’s located in the middle of nowhere in Northern Sweden and I was amazed at its gorgeous nature as soon as I got there. The first thing I thought was that I really need to come back some other time during winter and experience the Northern Lights in Abisko!

Such a unique, yet forgotten place, has to be one of the biggest hidden gems in Europe.

Is This The Best Hot Spring In Iceland?

When you hear about hot springs and lagoons in Iceland, you’re likely to think of the World-famous Blue Lagoon with its unique waters that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.

The Blue Lagoon was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland and probably one of my best travel experiences of all times but I have to admit that there’s another hot spring in Iceland that won an even more special place in my heart.

Sky Lagoon, Reykjavik

This thermal bath is located on the outskirts of Reykjavik and it needs to be on your itinerary even if you don’t have loads of time to soak in a lagoon. You can get there fast and easily from the city center and it’s the perfect activity to finish up your day after lots of exploring in Iceland, so make sure you go there – you won’t regret it!

🌅 An infinity pool with a seaview

One of Sky Lagoon’s biggest selling points is the unbelievable seaview you get from the lagoon. Once you enter the water and start walking across it, you will soon see one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever experienced.

They market themselves as the place “Where the Sea Meets the Sky” and that’s so accurate. I’ve literally never seen a place where the sea and the sky blend in so perfectly.

Hanging out by the infinity pool’s edge is most people’s favorite but there are also seats you can take in the middle of the lagoon to enjoy the view while you relax and take some time to unwind.

♨️ A thermal waterfall

Another amazing feature you will find there is a waterfall with thermal water flowing all the way from the top of the volcanic rock walls and down to the lagoon. It was one of my favorite places to relax when I was visiting Sky Lagoon and I could barely believe how magical that place felt when I was standing underneath that waterfall.

🧖 7-Step Ritual

After taking some well-deserved time to relax in the lagoon, it’s time to move to another beautiful area of the Sky Lagoon: the Spa.

That’s where you will get to complete the 7-Step Ritual that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. The first two steps are actually the Lagoon and the Glacier Pool – another highlight of the Sky Lagoon – but the remaining steps are waiting for you once you enter the spa area.

When you enter the Spa, you will be welcomed into the sauna, which in my opinion is the most special part of Sky Lagoon.

It’s not just a random sauna: it’s a sauna with the most amazing sea view you can possibly imagine. A fun fact about it is that the sauna’s window is the largest window in the whole country – so you can imagine the view you can enjoy from there.

Next up is an outdoor area where you’ll enjoy a gentle mist falling from the sky to cool you down after relaxing in the sauna. Take some exfoliating scrub after that and then it’s time for the steam room before you finish the whole ritual with a refreshing shower.

🎫 There are 2 different tickets you can get:

💲 The cheapest option is called Pure Pass. It gives you access to all areas of the Sky Lagoon, including the Spa area where you can enjoy their famous 7 Step Ritual, but you will have to change and shower in public changing rooms 👉🏼 Get your Pure Pass here

💲💲 The more expensive option is called Sky Pass and it gives you access to the same experience as the Pure Pass, the only difference being that you will have a private changing room 👉🏼 Get your Sky Pass here

🚐 The lagoon is located less than a 20-minute drive from central Reykjavik and if don’t want to take public transportation to go there, you can get a Sky Lagoon ticket with transfers included here

⚠️ Update: have you heard about a cheaper ticket to the Sky Lagoon, which doesn’t include the Spa area? That option has been discontinued from August 1st 2024, so now visitors can’t get tickets for only the Lagoon anymore.

Vasa Museum: a 17th-Century Warship That Spent 333 Years Underwater ⚓

Even though the Vasa Museum’s theme is not as broad as Skansen’s, since it only focuses on the Vasa ship that is on display in the middle of the Museum, it is a must visit while you are in Stockholm. It is one of the most visited museums in the whole Scandinavia and that’s for a good reason.

Vasa is a Swedish warship that was built between 1626 and 1628 and sank straight after beginning its maiden voyage, due to a faulty design. The sunken ship was forgotten for quite a while at the bottom of the sea, but after lying there for 333 years, a great effort was made to take it up to surface and let the World appreciate its beauty and History.

On April 24th of 1961, thousands of people gathered in Stockholm in order to witness the amazing feat of bringing up a sunken warship from the 17th century. Nowadays, visitors of the Vasa Museum can see it on an amazing display that is sure to take your breath away even if you couldn’t care less about ships.

Trust me, I’ve seen really reluctant and uninterested tourists completely change their minds about Vasa Museum as soon as they enter the door and see the huge majestic warship in its full splendor at the center of the museum.

If you’re looking to make your visit to Djurgården extra special, I highly recommend this guided tour that I recently took.

It’s not the cheapest option out there. It’s more of a premium experience — perfect if you’re in the mood to treat yourself. The tour includes several stops around the island, with lots of food included. One of the highlights is visiting the Vasa Museum, where we got time to explore and even enjoy lunch at the Vasa restaurant (yes, it was as good as it sounds!).

ABBA Museum: Step Into the World of Sweden’s Most Iconic Pop Group 🎤

Is there anything more iconic in Sweden than ABBA? This band completely took the World by storm with hit after hit in the 70s and 80s and the four band members became international symbols of Sweden like no others.

It might have been difficult to get close to the 4 pop stars in the old days but it‘s super easy nowadays for anyone who visits Sweden: just go to the ABBA Museum in central Stockholm.

You’ll be in ABBA World, with their original outfits on exhibition, quizzes to test your knowledge about the legendary band and even exact replicas of places that were important to the band members throughout their lives and music careers.

Nobel Prize Museum: Discover the Ideas That Changed the World 💡

Straight in Stockholm’s city center, there’s a museum dedicated to another swedish icon: the Nobel Prize.

Created by the swedish businessman and inventor who discovered dynamite, the Nobel Prize is the result of the fortune that was left by Alfred Nobel to establish it after his death. The goal was to recognize people who “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind” every year and that is exactly what has been happening for more than 100 years.

The first Nobel Prize ceremony took place in Stockholm in 1901 and more than 600 of them have been awarded so far. Nowadays, you can learn all about them at the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm.

At this museu located in the heart of Stockholm‘s old town, you will be able to read about previous Nobel Prize winners and their achievements, as well as you can visit temporary exhibitions.

Did you know? At the Nobel Museum, even the cafe’s chairs are special. If you turn them around and look at what’s underneath them, you will see that they are all signed by Nobel Laureates.

Stockholm Pass: Is It Worth It? 💰

You might have heard of the Stockholm Pass while planning your trip to Stockholm. It promises free entry to many of the city’s top attractions, plus extras like boat tours and hop-on hop-off buses.

But is it really worth it? Well, it depends.

The pass isn’t exactly cheap, so it’s totally fair to question whether it’s a smart buy. In my opinion, it’s not really worth it if you’re only in Stockholm for 1 or 2 days — you probably won’t have enough time to justify the price.

But if you’re staying for 3 days or more, and especially if you plan to visit several attractions and maybe even go further outside the city, then it can be a great way to save money and simplify your planning.

⭐ The Stockholm City Pass is worth it for most first-time visitors — but only if you get the 3-day pass or longer

🚫 If you prefer a slower pace, aren’t big on museums or are visiting in winter when tours are limited, the pass is probably not worth it. In these cases, it’s better to buy tickets individually.
